Why the First Fortnight Is Hard to Resource
Planning the first week is planning without data. You do not know what the class covered last year, what the previous teacher assessed, or which students will still be on your register in a month. Most published starter material solves the wrong half of that problem, offering icebreakers that tell you nothing and rule sheets that teach nothing. What you actually need is a task with real subject content that also functions as a diagnostic, so the first piece of work tells you who can measure accurately, who can write a sentence about a text, and who is guessing. The other constraint is marking. Two weeks of getting-to-know-you tasks that all arrive at once will bury you in the week you have least time.
A sequence that works
A Ten-Lesson Opening You Can Reuse
Five stages spread across the first two weeks, in any of the subjects here. Each stage produces something you can look at afterwards, so the diagnostic work happens without a formal test in week one.
- Start with work, not rulesLesson one opens with a short subject task inside the first five minutes. Routines get introduced as they become necessary, which is also when students remember them.
- A diagnostic disguised as a taskThe measurement lesson, the color mixing task or the short text response gives you a graded picture of prior skill without anybody being told they are being tested.
- Teach the year's vocabulary earlyThe words you will use every week get taught now: analyze, compare and evaluate in English, or precision and uncertainty in science. Later lessons then cost less to explain.
- Set up how work is organizedStudents build the folder, the book layout or the study routine they will keep all year, using the time management material rather than a five-minute instruction.
- One short assessed pieceEnd the fortnight with a small marked task, narrow enough to grade over one evening, and give the feedback before anything larger is set.
Where it goes wrong
Reading Your First Diagnostic Honestly
A week one diagnostic measures last year's teaching as much as this year's students, so treat low scores as information about coverage rather than capability. Look at the pattern instead of the total: a class that can calculate but cannot state a unit has a different problem from one that cannot start at all. Two habits are worth building immediately. Insist on units and labels from the first calculation, because a class allowed to drop them now will still be dropping them in the mock exam. Ask for a full sentence in every subject answer, including the practical ones, and correct the first few in detail so the standard is visible.

Do these work if I do not know what the class covered?
That is what they are for. Each opening task is written to be accessible without specific prior coverage while still separating students by what they can do, so a class that has met measurement before simply moves faster. The answer keys make it quick to see where a group sits. You will know more about prior teaching after the first assessed piece than any handover sheet would have told you.
Can these units double as cover lessons later?
The measurement, color mixing and vocabulary lessons run reasonably well with a colleague in the room, because the instructions are on the sheet and the answer keys are complete. The study skills material needs you rather than a substitute, since it depends on the routines you personally intend to keep. Treat the practical art tasks with care if the cover teacher is not comfortable handing out materials.
How much printing does the first fortnight need?
Roughly one sheet per student per lesson, with the vocabulary reference printed once and kept in the folder for the year. Everything is supplied as editable Word files and PDFs, so trimming a two-page task to one page before it reaches the copier is straightforward. The slides can be projected instead if your printing allowance is already under pressure in the first week.
