SEL When You Need Graded Evidence: A Plan for Kentucky Teachers
Quick answer: Grade the artifact, not the feeling. Kentucky teachers can run SEL work that lands in the gradebook by attaching it to Kentucky Academic Standards content that already carries marks, then scoring the product against a rubric students saw first. Private reflection stays ungraded; the written analysis is what you record.
Why does SEL work keep falling out of the gradebook?
Most SEL time in Kentucky schools gets logged as participation, and participation is the first thing a parent challenges and the last thing an audit can defend. If your building has asked every teacher for evidence of SEL practice, what it needs is a scored product with a date on it. Feelings are not evidence; a written response is.
The fix is structural rather than motivational. Pick the Kentucky Academic Standards strand your course already reports against, whether a reading standard, a writing standard or a social-studies inquiry standard, and let the SEL content be what students think with. Grade the analysis, the argument, the presentation. Nobody scores a child's emotional state for the work to count.
The ready-made version of this plan
- All Saints’ Day Craft – SEL and Art Worksheet for Elementary Grades — $9.99, instant download
- Characterisation and Analysing Fiction — $24.99, instant download
- XXL Ethics Bundle: Values, Responsibility & Society | 10 Complete Units · 30 Lessons | Grades 7–10 — $89.99, instant download
Each of these downloads as lesson material you can run the same week, and Kentucky Teaching Resources & Worksheets (Grades K–12) lists what else fits a Kentucky classroom by grade band.
What does this look like in an elementary room?
Elementary teachers have the harder version, because a craft table does not obviously produce a grade. It does once the making is paired with a short written or dictated explanation. All Saints’ Day Craft – SEL and Art Worksheet for Elementary Grades pairs an art activity with an SEL worksheet, so every child leaves with a page you can file against a writing or speaking standard rather than a sticker chart.
Two things make it gradeable. First, a rubric with three rows the children can read: the piece is finished, the explanation names a feeling and a reason, the handwriting is legible to a stranger. Second, a date and a photograph. Scanning the finished work into your class folder means the evidence still exists in April, long after the display comes down.
How do I make SEL count in a secondary English class?
Secondary teachers already have the vehicle. The English II end-of-course exam sits inside the Kentucky Summative Assessment, and character analysis is squarely on that ground. Characterisation and Analysing Fiction gives you a fiction-analysis sequence built on motive, change and textual evidence, which is emotional-literacy work that happens to be scored as literary analysis. Students argue about why a character acted, and you mark the argument.
Sequence it so the graded piece comes last. Two lessons of shared reading and annotation, one lesson of structured disagreement, then a timed paragraph naming the character's motive and citing two lines. That paragraph becomes your gradebook entry and your SEL evidence at once. More material by grade band sits on Kentucky Teaching Resources & Worksheets (Grades K–12) if you want a second text.
What if the whole team needs one plan?
Consistency is what makes SEL survive a change of principal. Once a middle-school team agrees on one rubric and one filing habit, the evidence stops depending on which teacher happens to care. XXL Ethics Bundle: Values, Responsibility & Society | 10 Complete Units · 30 Lessons | Grades 7–10 holds ten units across thirty lessons for grades seven to ten, enough for a team to split by teacher and report against identical standards language.
Kentucky has run standards-based reform since KERA in 1990, and the habit shows: administrators here ask which standard, not whether. Give them the strand, the task and the scored sample from the same week. If you compare wording with a colleague across the river in Ohio or Indiana, State Standards Navigator: Teaching Resources by State lists each state's standards page in one place.
Frequently asked questions
Are these SEL units approved by the Kentucky Department of Education?
No. They are independent classroom resources, not affiliated with or endorsed by the Kentucky Department of Education or any assessment authority. Alignment to the Kentucky Academic Standards is your judgment: read the unit objectives beside the standards your course reports against, then keep the tasks carrying both.
Can SEL work really count toward a course grade?
It counts when the thing you score is academic. Grade the paragraph, the annotated text, the presentation or the completed worksheet, and never the student's disclosure. Keep private writing ungraded and say so out loud, then score the public product against a rubric the class saw before anybody started.
How much time does this take from a KSA-tested course?
Two or three periods per unit, if you attach it to content you were teaching anyway. Teachers in end-of-course subjects such as English II or US History usually fold the material into an existing text rather than adding a separate week, which leaves the calendar intact.
