Classroom ideas for Vancouver

Use these suggestions to extend your planning. Local examples and activities below are teaching ideas to add, rather than a list of files included in every product.

Bird count in the schoolyard

Run a ten-minute bird count once a week from September to June and record species, numbers and weather. Students will likely see robins, crows and chickadees, and may spot Anna's hummingbirds in winter. Compare the data with the migration lesson in Birds Through the Year and ask what changed and why.

Land art on the school grounds

Take the Land Art unit outside and use only fallen leaves, cones, twigs and stones from the school grounds. Students photograph their arrangement, leave everything as they found it, and write a short caption using the unit's terms for line, pattern and transience.

Score a Vancouver scene

Vancouver is a busy centre for film and television production. After the Film Music Analysis unit, students film a short, silent clip of a familiar place near school, then score it twice with contrasting music and explain how each score changes what the viewer feels.

Quick answers

Questions from Vancouver teachers

Do you guarantee curriculum alignment?

TeachLessons guarantees alignment with BC's Curriculum. This guarantee covers the subjects, learning objectives and levels stated in each product description.

Is TeachLessons affiliated with the Vancouver School Board or the BC Ministry?

No. TeachLessons is an independent publisher with no affiliation to the Vancouver School Board or the BC Ministry of Education and Child Care. Teachers choose our resources themselves and decide how they fit their own planning, school policies and local protocols.

Do these resources prepare students for the FSA or Graduation Assessments?

They support the literacy and numeracy skills behind the Foundation Skills Assessment in Grades 4 and 7 and the Graduation Assessments in Grades 10 and 12, but they are not practice tests. Use official sample materials to show students the assessment format.

How do I choose the right grade level?

Start with the grade range on each product card and then read the learning objectives in the product description. Many units have differentiated worksheets, so one unit can serve a mixed class. For English learners, a unit listed for a lower grade may be the better fit.

What format do the resources come in?

Every resource is an instant digital download. Most include printable worksheets and slides for projection, and many files are editable. You can print them for lessons outdoors or on paper, or share them digitally with your class.

How can I connect these units to Vancouver?

The units are written for general classroom use, so the local connections come from you. Local birds, frogs in nearby wetlands, natural materials on the school grounds and the city's film industry all make good links. Work with your school's Indigenous education staff on any Indigenous content.

Your next teaching step

Plan one unit you can take outside

Choose one featured unit, teach it in your classroom first, then take one lesson outside. The subject collections above hold more science, art and math units for the rest of the year.
