Arizona Grades 1–4 Social Studies: Ready Ancient Civilizations Units
Arizona Grades 1–4 Social Studies: Ready Ancient Civilizations Units
If you teach social studies in Arizona's early grades and want history lessons that are already written, the Ancient Civilizations Bundle gives you eight complete units for Grades 1–4: Egypt, hieroglyphs, mummies, Greece, Rome, China, the Stone Age and the Vikings. It is not built around Arizona's grade-by-grade titles, so treat it as a ready strand you place inside your year, not as your whole course.

The real problem
Where ancient history sits in Arizona's K–5 sequence
Arizona's History and Social Science Standards, adopted in October 2018, give each elementary grade a title: Grade 1 Communities, Grade 2 The World Around Me, Grade 3 Arizona Studies, Grade 4 Regions and Cultures of the Americas, Grade 5 United States Studies. No elementary grade is labeled ancient history. Grade 4 reaches back to early civilizations, but in the Americas: the pre-contact Americas, early Mesoamerican and South American civilizations, and European settlements up to 1763. Egypt, Greece and Rome are not the subject of that year. So an Arizona teacher holding an ancient world bundle has a fair question: where does it go? If your Grade 2 plan for The World Around Me includes how people live in other places, one civilization makes a good unit. In Grade 4, the Old World civilizations work as a comparison when students study how early American societies farmed, built and recorded their lives. And homeschool families, who set their own order, often put ancient history early because young children take to pyramids and longships. Either way, writing a passage, worksheet and key for each topic eats evenings.
Why it fits
What the eight units give an Arizona classroom
Every unit follows the same pattern, so the routine carries from topic to topic.
- Ancient Egypt, Hieroglyphs and Mummies & Tomb Art form a three-unit Egypt block for a longer study.
- Word banks next to every reading passage help early readers and students still learning English.
- Project and source activities give Grade 4 students Old World examples to compare with the Americas.
- Slides for every sub-unit let you teach from the board without building your own.
- Complete answer keys make it practical for a parent or a substitute to check the work.
- Units stand alone, so you can teach one civilization in a spare stretch instead of all eight.
Getting started
One way to fit the bundle into an Arizona school year
A suggested order, not a fixed schedule; adjust it to your district's pacing guide.
- Mark the standards it touchesOpen the Arizona History and Social Science Standards for your grade and note which unit topics support them. Write those references into your own plan, because the units carry no Arizona codes.
- Open with the Stone AgeThe Stone Age unit sets up timelines and life before writing. Grade 4 classes can use it as background before they turn to the first peoples of the Americas.
- Teach Egypt as one blockRun Ancient Egypt, Hieroglyphs and Mummies & Tomb Art back to back. Students see one civilization from three sides: the river and its rulers, writing, and beliefs shown through art.
- Compare Greece, Rome and ChinaAsk the same three questions in each classical unit: how did people live, what did they build, who made the rules. A comparison chart on the wall keeps the thread visible.
- Close with the Vikings and a local linkFinish with the Vikings, then have students connect one idea to the Americas or to Arizona, such as how early peoples farmed or traveled. That local material is something you bring.
What to buy
Which history bundle fits your Arizona grade
Pick the Ancient Civilizations Bundle ($99.99, parts $199.92) if you want the ancient world as a strand somewhere in Grades 1–4. If you teach Grade 4 in Arizona, the Early American History Bundle ($99.99, parts $199.92) sits closer to Regions and Cultures of the Americas, with units on Native Americans, explorers, Pilgrims and pioneers. The Elementary History Curriculum holds all 20 elementary units for $169.99 instead of $499.80. For older siblings in Grades 5–6, Life Along the Nile in Ancient Egypt and The Stone Age: Traces of Life cost $24.99 each.
Honest limits
What the bundle does not do
These units were not written for Arizona. They contain no Arizona Studies content, nothing on early Mesoamerican or South American civilizations and no Arizona standards codes, so check each lesson against the Arizona History and Social Science Standards and your district's pacing yourself. You supply printing, any craft materials for the projects, and all local content. The licence covers your own teaching; if colleagues at your school want to use it too, send Teach Lessons a short message first. If the bundle turns out not to fit, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Is this bundle aligned with Arizona's social studies standards?
No. It is not aligned with, approved under or written for the Arizona History and Social Science Standards adopted in 2018. The units cover ancient world topics that can support parts of your year, but you need to compare them with the standards for your grade and decide where they fit. No Arizona standards codes appear anywhere in the materials.
Does it help with Grade 4 Regions and Cultures of the Americas?
Only indirectly. Arizona's Grade 4 covers the Americas from pre-contact times to European settlements up to 1763, including early Mesoamerican and South American civilizations. This bundle covers Egypt, Greece, Rome, China, the Vikings and the Stone Age, which work as comparison. For the Americas themselves, the Early American History Bundle is the closer match, and you will still add Mesoamerican material.
Can Grade 1 students manage the reading passages?
The worksheets are differentiated and every passage has a word bank, which helps younger readers. With first graders, read the passage aloud, let the slides carry the content, then pair students for the worksheet. Preview one sub-unit before your first lesson so you can judge the level for your class.
We homeschool in Arizona. Can this be part of our social studies?
Arizona lists social studies among the subjects homeschool families teach, and this bundle can be one piece of that. It has no Arizona history or government, so plan to add those. Check current requirements with the state or a homeschool legal resource. If you pay through an education savings or scholarship account, check that program's rules and vendor list before buying.
What exactly arrives after checkout?
A download link reaches your inbox right after purchase, and the files also stay in your customer account under Orders. You get all eight units with their overviews, lesson plans, worksheets, project and source activities, answer keys and slides, ready to print or show on screen the same day.
Can my grade-level team share one purchase?
The licence is for your own teaching. Use across a team or a whole school is possible, but please send Teach Lessons a short message before you share the files so the arrangement is clear. Posting the files publicly or reselling them is not allowed.
