Newfoundland and Labrador teaches from its own curriculum guides, built on the Atlantic Canada Framework for Essential Graduation Learnings, and that framework asks for something a worksheet pack rarely delivers. Communication, Problem Solving and Technological Competence are meant to run through every subject rather than live in one course, so a science lesson is expected to produce writing and reasoning alongside content. The current review adds pressure of its own: the province has been reconsidering required instructional hours for some Grade 7 to 9 courses through 2025–26, and a course that loses hours loses material with them. Somebody has to decide what goes, and it is the teacher holding the timetable. Each unit is organized backwards from what students should be able to do at the end, so the last lesson produces work you can mark against an outcome rather than a vague impression.

  1. State the outcome in plain languageThe first slide says what students will be able to do by the end of the unit, in words a Grade 8 class understands. Knowing the destination changes how they treat practice.
  2. Work one clean example togetherYou model the whole method once — a ray diagram, an induced current, a set of measurements — with every step shown, including the ones experienced teachers tend to do silently.
  3. Remove the support graduallyThe tiered sheets take away scaffolding a piece at a time. A student finishing tier two has done the same physics as one finishing tier four, with more of the structure supplied.
  4. Move to a second contextA new situation tests whether the method travelled or whether the class learned one example by heart. Ten minutes of discussion here usually saves a lesson of reteaching later.
  5. Mark against the outcomeThe closing written task is built to be marked against the outcome you named on day one, which makes the mark defensible when a parent or an administrator asks how you arrived at it.

The province's curriculum guides carry the Atlantic Canada Framework for Essential Graduation Learnings, seven cross-curricular learnings including Communication, Problem Solving and Technological Competence. How much preparation does a finished unit remove?

What stays with you is everything that depends on knowing your class: choosing which tier each table gets, cutting questions that will not land, and the marking.

Yes, because the lessons are not welded together. Each one has its own plan and timings, so a course with fewer hours can run the opening lesson, one tier of practice and the written task, leaving the extension work optional. The unit also tells you what you give up by dropping a lesson, which beats reaching the end of a shortened term and finding the gap.
