Columbus First Graders: Phonics, Reading and Math to Do at Home
A Columbus first grader can practice reading, writing, phonics and math at home with the 1st Grade Practice Bundle, seven printable resources for $34.99. One of the seven is written for you: Learn to Read at Home, a parent guide with its own workbook, so you get both the pages and an explanation of how to help a beginning reader. It fits ten-minute sessions after school or a home school morning.
Look inside the Grade 1 bundleFor $34.99 the 1st Grade Practice Bundle delivers seven Grade 1 resources: English Grammar Grade 1, Grade 1 Writing Prompts, Grade 1 Phonics Writing Prompts, the reading story Daisy the Brave Little Duck, an English vocabulary trainer, Interactive Math for Grade 1 with numbers, operations and shapes, and the Learn to Read at Home parent guide. Think of it as practice, not a whole first grade curriculum; nothing in it is written for Ohio.

The real problem
First grade in Columbus: what parents can add at home
First grade is the year most children turn letters and sounds into actual reading, and parents in Columbus often want to help without knowing quite how. Ohio revised and adopted new K-8 English language arts standards in 2026, part of Ohio's Learning Standards, so your child's class may be adjusting its reading work this year. At school, Columbus City Schools has never allowed elementary students to use phones during the school day, and an Ohio law required every district to have a policy against student phone use during the instructional day by January 1, 2026. Home is where most screen time happens for a six- or seven-year-old, which makes a short paper routine after school more valuable, not less. For some families the year carries more change: Moler and Broadleigh elementary schools are in their last year in their current buildings, and their families are going through a boundary process for next fall. Home schooling families have their own planning to do, because Ohio's home education option asks for instruction across several subjects. In every case the useful thing is the same: a few pages a day that build reading and number sense, and a parent who knows what to listen for.
Why it fits
Seven pieces for a first grader
Six of the pieces are for your child and one is for you, with each early literacy skill in its own pack.
- Short grammar pages work on sentences, nouns, verbs and punctuation at a Grade 1 level.
- Story starters and sentence practice in the writing prompts suit children just beginning to write.
- Phonics writing prompts build phonological awareness, the sound work underneath early reading.
- Daisy the Brave Little Duck is a reading story with questions to check understanding.
- A Grade 1 math pack on numbers, operations and shapes balances the literacy work.
- The Learn to Read at Home guide explains to parents how to support a beginning reader.
Getting started
Five short sessions in a first grade week
One sample week. Six-year-olds respond to brief sessions and to praise for trying, so keep both in mind.
- Monday: the parent reads firstGive yourself one evening with Learn to Read at Home before your child starts. Knowing how to respond to a guess or a stuck word makes every later session go better.
- Tuesday and Thursday: sounds and wordsUse the phonics writing prompts and the vocabulary trainer for ten minutes. Say the sounds out loud together, then let your child write on their own.
- Wednesday: one math pageDo a page from Interactive Math for Grade 1. Use coins, buttons or fingers for counting if that helps; you supply anything you want to count with.
- Friday: the storyRead part of Daisy the Brave Little Duck together and answer a few questions. Stop at a good moment so your child wants to come back to it.
- Weekend: one sentence of writingPick a story starter from the writing prompts and let your child write or dictate one sentence. Read it back aloud and keep it in a folder.
What to buy
Picking the right first grade purchase
For most Columbus families, $34.99 for the 1st Grade Practice Bundle is the sensible spend; bought one by one, the seven parts come to $50.93. Literacy-only families can choose the Grade 1 ELA Pack ($12.99): grammar, writing prompts, phonics, the Daisy story and a vocabulary trainer, minus the math pack and the parent guide. With children in more than one grade, the Learning at Home Bundle ($79.99), four parent guides from Grade 1 to Grade 4, may serve you better. If English is a new language at home, the Early ESL Starter Bundle ($27.99) covers vocabulary, grammar and a calendar unit for Grades 1–3.
Honest limits
What is missing from the bundle
Ohio was not the target when these pages were written, there are no Ohio standards codes, and they have not been checked against the 2026 Ohio ELA standards; set them beside the work your child brings home. It covers literacy and math only; there is no social studies or science, which home schooling families need to plan separately. You provide paper, printing and any counting objects. The licence is for your own family. If it is not right for your child, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Does this bundle follow Ohio's Learning Standards for first grade?
No. Think of it as general first grade practice: no Ohio standards alignment, no approval from Ohio or Columbus City Schools, and no Ohio-specific content. Ohio adopted revised K-8 ELA standards in 2026, so the simplest check is to ask your child's teacher which reading skills are next and choose pages that line up.
We home school in Columbus. Does this cover first grade?
It covers part of it. Ohio's home education option asks for a yearly notice to the district superintendent by August 30 and instruction in English language arts, math, science, history, government and social studies. This bundle helps with reading, writing and math only. Confirm the current rules with the state or a homeschool legal resource.
How long should a first grader practice each day?
The product does not set a time. Many six- and seven-year-olds manage ten to fifteen minutes after a school day. Watch your child rather than the clock: if attention drops, stop and pick it up tomorrow. A short, regular routine helps more than a long one.
My child is not reading yet. Is this too advanced?
Start with the parent guide and the phonics prompts, which work on sounds before full reading. The grammar pages and the story can wait until your child is more confident. The guide is written to help parents of children at the very beginning of reading.
Is the math enough on its own?
Interactive Math for Grade 1 practices numbers, operations and shapes, but it is one pack, not a full math program. For more math, the Elementary Math Practice & Warm-Up Bundle has seven practice packs and warm-ups across Grades 1–4. It costs $34.99 and suits children who enjoy short number tasks.
When do we receive it?
Straight after checkout. The email with your download link arrives first, and the files remain under Orders in your customer account if you want to print pages again later in the year. Changed your mind within 7 days? The bundle can be exchanged for store credit of equal value.
