The real problem

Why the sub folder never gets done

Every teacher knows they should have emergency sub plans, and many folders are thin or out of date by the middle of fall. The reason is simple: writing a lesson someone else can teach takes longer than teaching it yourself. It has to explain itself, it cannot depend on yesterday's lesson, and it has to keep a room of young children busy for a full block with an adult who does not know their names. The emergency itself is the worst time to plan. A fever at 5 a.m. or a family call mid-week leaves you writing plans from bed or asking a colleague to grab something from a shelf. Elementary makes it harder than secondary, because a sub covers the whole day: morning work, literacy, math and the stretch after lunch when attention drops. Schools face a version of the same problem. A vacancy covered by a rotation of substitutes, or a long-term sub who arrives without materials, needs daily work solid enough to count as learning. And substitutes want material they can actually use. Clear instructions, tasks students can start without a long introduction and something engaging for the last hour make the day work for the sub as well as for the class.

Why it fits

What goes into your sub folder from this bundle

The six parts cover a full elementary day, from morning work to the last hour before dismissal.

  • 50 No-Prep Substitute Lessons for Elementary Classrooms give you a deep stack to rotate through the year.
  • Daily ELA Practice task cards and morning work fill the first minutes of the day and literacy center time.
  • Grade 3 and Grade 4 Math Warm-Up Worksheets give a sub a ready start to the math block.
  • Math Warm-Up Activities for Grades 1–4 cover the younger grades a sub may be teaching.
  • Soccer Escape Room – The Missing Tournament is a no-prep option for the afternoon slump.
  • The bundle also suits long-term subs and schools covering a vacancy, as well as single sick days.

Getting started

Build the folder in one afternoon

A suggested way to turn the download into a folder a substitute can use without calling you.

  1. Choose three days of lessonsPick three of the 50 substitute lessons that suit your grade and print enough copies for the class. Three days gives you a buffer for a short illness.
  2. Add morning work and warm-upsPrint a set of Daily ELA task cards or morning work, plus the math warm-ups for your grade. Label everything by day so the sub knows what comes first.
  3. Keep the escape room for the afternoonPut the Soccer Escape Room in its own envelope marked for a long afternoon or a day when the class needs a change of pace. Near the end of the day is a good slot.
  4. Write a one-page cover sheetAdd your schedule, class list, allergies, dismissal routine and the name of a helpful colleague. The bundle supplies the lessons; only you can supply the information about your room.
  5. Refresh it each termAfter a sub day, replace what was used with new lessons from the 50. Check the folder at the start of each term so it matches your current class and schedule.

What to buy

Sub bundle, math warm-ups or a curriculum?

For a full emergency folder, the Elementary Sub Plans & Emergency Lessons Bundle at $69.99 is the direct fit; the six parts cost $112.94 separately. If you mainly need daily math starters, the Elementary Math Practice & Warm-Up Bundle ($34.99) adds seven practice packs for Grades 1–4. For literacy practice across grades, the Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum ($49.99) has 24 grade-level packs. And if sub days should still move social studies forward, the Elementary History Curriculum ($169.99) has all 20 Grades 1–4 history units with lesson plans and slides.

Honest limits

What the bundle cannot do for you

The bundle gives you lessons, not your class information, so the cover sheet with routines, allergies and dismissal is still your job. The math warm-ups are for Grades 1–4, with worksheets for Grades 3 and 4 only, so a Grade 5 sub day leans on the substitute lessons and ELA practice. Nothing here is aligned to a state's standards or your district's pacing; check it against your own expectations. You do the printing. One licence covers your own classroom; for a school-wide sub library, message Teach Lessons first. If it is not a fit, exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Are these sub plans aligned to my state's standards?

No. The lessons are not aligned to, approved under or reviewed against Common Core or any state's standards, and they include no standards codes. They are general practice and review for elementary classrooms. If your district expects sub-day work to tie to the current pacing guide, check the lessons against it and pick the ones that fit.

Can a substitute use these without instructions from me?

The resources are no-prep, so a sub can hand them out without preparing anything. A sub still needs to know your schedule and routines, so add a short cover sheet. Print and sort the materials ahead of time so nobody has to search your files on the day.

Does it work for Grade 5?

The bundle is marked for Grades 1–5. The 50 substitute lessons, the ELA practice and the escape room are the parts to use in Grade 5, because the math warm-ups are for Grades 1–4, with separate worksheets for Grades 3 and 4. A fifth-grade teacher may want to add their own math review.

Can our school buy one copy for all classrooms?

The licence covers use in your own teaching. For a sub library shared across a school or grade team, send Teach Lessons a short message before buying and ask about team use. Please do not copy the files to a shared staff drive without that agreement.

Is it useful for a long-term substitute?

Yes. The bundle is meant for schools covering vacancies and for long-term subs who need daily material, which is why it includes daily ELA practice and warm-ups as well as stand-alone lessons. A long-term sub will still need the class's main curriculum for new content; this bundle covers practice and review.

How soon can I use it?

Immediately. The download link arrives by email after checkout, and the files stay under Orders in your customer account, so you can reprint from any computer later. If you are reading this the night before a sick day, print one sub lesson, one ELA set and a warm-up, and tomorrow is covered.
