The real problem
Home practice on the Broward calendar
Broward County Public Schools runs from August 10, 2026 to May 28, 2027, with a full week off at Thanksgiving, two weeks at winter break and a week of spring break. Those breaks are where many young children lose ground in reading and math, and they are also when parents finally have time to help. The trouble is knowing how. A worksheet alone does not tell a parent how to sound out a word with a six-year-old or what to do when a second grader refuses to start. Some Fort Lauderdale families also teach at home full time. Florida's home education program under s. 1002.41, F.S. asks you to file a notice of intent with the county school superintendent within 30 days of beginning, which here means Broward. You keep a portfolio: a log of educational activities made during instruction, listing reading materials, plus samples of your child's work, kept for two years. Each year you file an evaluation, chosen from five options, including a portfolio review by a certified teacher or a nationally normed test. This is a short summary, so check current law with the state or a homeschool legal resource.
Why it fits
Four guides, four common sticking points
Each part of the bundle answers a different question parents of young children ask. Here is how they fit a Broward family.
- Learn to Read at Home guides parents of first and second graders through early reading at home.
- No More School Struggles helps when a second grader resists homework, with a workbook on motivation.
- Math Made Easy pairs a parent guide with a third grade math workbook for steady practice.
- English Made Easy supports fourth graders in English, useful over the long Thanksgiving week off.
- Workbook pages make clean portfolio samples for homeschool families keeping Florida's required log.
- Each guide stands alone, so a family with two children uses two guides at once.
Getting started
Using the bundle across a Broward school year
This is one suggested pattern. Families who homeschool full time will use the guides more often.
- Read the guide before the workbookSpend an evening with the parent guide for your child's grade. Knowing the approach first makes the workbook sessions shorter and calmer for both of you.
- Use Thanksgiving week for a resetWith the full week off, try a short daily session. It shows you where your child is before the second half of the fall. Keep it light so the holiday still feels like a holiday.
- Keep winter break lightTwo weeks is long enough to lose routines. Three or four short sessions a week keep reading and math warm without turning the holiday into school.
- Log as you go if you homeschoolWrite down the guide and workbook pages you used each day. That builds the activity log and reading list Florida's portfolio expects. Note the date and how long you worked.
- Check progress before spring breakLook back at early workbook pages and compare them with recent ones. Use spring break to revisit whatever still feels shaky. Your child can help choose which pages to repeat.
What to buy
Which home practice bundle fits your child
Choose the Learning at Home Bundle at $79.99 if you want guidance as well as practice pages; bought separately, the four guides cost $119.96. If your child mainly needs more literacy practice and you are comfortable teaching it, the Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum ($49.99, parts $95.76) gives grammar, writing, phonics and reading packs for every grade. For math only, the Elementary Math Practice & Warm-Up Bundle ($34.99) covers Grades 1–4. Families with a child in Grades 3–5 who want science can add the Elementary Science Curriculum ($109.99).
Honest limits
What to know first
The guides are written for any state and contain no Florida content. They are not built on Florida's B.E.S.T. standards, so check them against your child's grade expectations or your Broward teacher's guidance. Each guide targets one grade, so a third grader gets most from Math Made Easy, not all four. Homeschool families still choose their own evaluation and keep their own portfolio. The licence is for your family; a co-op or tutoring group needs a short message to Teach Lessons first. Within 7 days you can exchange the bundle for store credit of equal value.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Does this meet Florida's B.E.S.T. standards or homeschool requirements?
No. The bundle is not aligned with B.E.S.T. and is not approved by the state or Broward County Public Schools. Whatever materials you choose, you remain responsible for the portfolio and the annual evaluation. Check current law with the state or a homeschool legal resource.
Can workbook pages go into my homeschool portfolio?
Yes, completed pages are student work samples, which the portfolio includes. List the guide titles in your log of reading materials as well. Keep in mind the superintendent can inspect the portfolio on 15 days' written notice, so keep it organized. Dating each page helps if questions come up later.
My child is in first grade. Is the bundle worth it?
Learn to Read at Home is written for Grades 1–2, so it fits now, and No More School Struggles follows in second grade. The math and English guides come into play in Grades 3 and 4. If you only need the first one, check whether a single guide suits you better.
How much time does this take each day?
That depends on your child, and the guides do not set a fixed schedule. Many families find fifteen to twenty minutes after school is enough on school days, with longer sessions over Thanksgiving or winter break. If your child is tired after school, a few minutes of reading together still counts.
Is it all printed, or does it need a tablet?
It is a digital download that you can print. No app or account is needed. Many parents print the workbook pages and read the guide on whatever screen is handy. Keep the printed pages in a binder so they are easy to find when the next school break comes around.
When do I get it after paying?
Immediately. A download link comes by email, and the files also stay in your account under Orders, so you can print them again later in the year. If you homeschool, you can start your activity log the same day with the guide title and the first workbook pages you complete together.
