Quick answer

For an Egypt study in a Minnesota elementary school, the Ancient Egypt Unit Bundle ($69.99) is the most focused choice. It holds three Grades 1–4 units, each with an overview and three sub-units, plus a Grades 5–6 unit on farming, society and beliefs along the Nile. It is not written for Minnesota's 2026–27 social studies standards, so match it to the benchmarks for your grade first.

The real problem

New standards, fixed grades: the Minnesota question

Minnesota teachers are planning social studies under new rules this year. The K–12 Academic Standards for Social Studies in Minnesota Rules 3501.1350 take effect at the beginning of the 2026–27 school year, and the earlier social studies rules were repealed. For elementary teachers the key detail is that K–8 benchmarks are grade-specific and must be taught in the grade they are assigned to. So an Egypt unit is only useful if ancient civilizations belong to your grade's benchmarks, or if you use it as enrichment around them. We have not verified which elementary grade the new standards give to the ancient world, so check your district's curriculum map before buying anything. The revised standards also embed ethnic studies and Indigenous education, including Tribal histories, Indigenous languages and treaty rights, based on recommendations from Tribal Nations including the Anishinaabe and Dakota. An Egypt bundle does not touch that work, and you will need separate materials for it. Then there is the practical side. Young students need short readings, word banks and something to make with their hands, and a combined class may include second graders and fifth graders who need very different reading loads.

Why it fits

What you get for an Egypt study

The three Grades 1–4 units share one structure, so students know what to expect from lesson to lesson.

  • Ancient Egypt: Pyramids, Pharaohs & the Nile gives younger students the river, the rulers and the monuments.
  • Mummies & Tomb Art covers burial customs and art in a calm, age-appropriate way.
  • Hieroglyphs: Writing in Ancient Egypt lets students try a writing system, good for a hands-on afternoon.
  • Each sub-unit has a differentiated worksheet with reading passage and word bank for mixed reading levels.
  • Life Along the Nile adds farming, society, beliefs and source work for Grades 5–6 readers.
  • Slides for every sub-unit can support an online lesson if your district runs e-learning days.

Getting started

Running a four-week Egypt block

Four weeks is a suggested length, not a rule. Shorten or stretch it to fit your grade's benchmarks and your schedule.

  1. Check your grade's benchmarks firstLook at your district's map for the 2026–27 social studies standards and confirm where ancient civilizations sit. Decide whether Egypt is core content for your grade or enrichment.
  2. Week 1: the Nile and the pharaohsStart with Pyramids, Pharaohs & the Nile. The overview sets the scene, and the three sub-units each bring a lesson plan, worksheet, project or source activity, answer key and slides.
  3. Week 2: tombs and burial artTeach Mummies & Tomb Art next. Students look at objects and images from tombs and talk about what they show about beliefs, which leads naturally into writing.
  4. Week 3: write like a scribeUse Hieroglyphs: Writing in Ancient Egypt for the most hands-on week. Display finished work so younger students can explain their symbols to visitors or families.
  5. Week 4: older students go deeperIn a combined or upper-grade class, give Grades 5–6 students Life Along the Nile with its farming, society and source work while younger students finish their projects.

What to buy

Egypt alone, or the wider ancient world

Choose the Ancient Egypt Unit Bundle ($69.99, parts $99.96) when Egypt is the study. If your benchmarks call for several early civilizations, the Ancient Civilizations Bundle ($99.99, parts $199.92) has eight Grades 1–4 units, among them Greece, Rome, China, the Vikings and the Stone Age plus three Egypt units. Teachers who want every history topic for Grades 1–4 can take the Elementary History Curriculum at $169.99 for all 20 units (parts $499.80). If your grade studies the Middle Ages instead, the Medieval World for Kids Bundle ($69.99, parts $99.96) covers knights, towns, Vikings and old trades.

Honest limits

Honest limits for Minnesota teachers

These units are general elementary history. They contain no Minnesota content, no Dakota or Anishinaabe history, and no references to Minnesota Rules 3501.1350 or its benchmarks, and they are not endorsed or approved by the Minnesota Department of Education. Compare them with your grade's benchmarks yourself. You provide craft supplies for projects and decide how the units fit around your other social studies work. Grade-level teams that want to share one purchase should message Teach Lessons first. If the bundle does not fit, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value, not cash.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Does this bundle follow Minnesota's new social studies standards?

No claim is made that it does. The bundle is not aligned to or approved under the K–12 Academic Standards for Social Studies that take effect in 2026–27, and it contains no Minnesota benchmark codes. Because Minnesota expects K–8 benchmarks to be taught in their assigned grade, check your grade's benchmarks and use the units where they fit or as enrichment.

Which grade should teach ancient Egypt in Minnesota?

We cannot tell you that reliably, because the grade-by-grade focus of the new standards has not been verified for this page. Your district's curriculum map or the Minnesota Department of Education is the right source. Once you know, you can choose between the Grades 1–4 units and Life Along the Nile for Grades 5–6.

Does it cover ethnic studies or Indigenous education?

No. Minnesota's revised standards embed ethnic studies and Indigenous education, including Tribal histories and treaty rights, and this bundle does not address them. It is about ancient Egypt only, from the Nile and the pharaohs to tomb art and writing. Plan separate, carefully chosen materials for that part of your social studies year.

Can I teach it in a combined Grades 3–5 class?

Yes, and it suits that setting. The three Grades 1–4 units have differentiated worksheets with word banks, and Life Along the Nile gives fifth graders more reading and source work. Everyone can study the same topic at the same time while working at different levels.

What will I need to supply?

Paper, printing, and any craft materials for the projects are up to you, since no supplies come with the download. You get lesson plans, worksheets, project or source activities, answer keys and slides as files for print or digital use, available right after purchase by email and under Orders in your account.

Can my grade-level team share the bundle?

The license covers your own classroom. For use across a grade-level team or a whole school, send Teach Lessons a short message before buying and ask about team use. Please do not post the files on a shared public drive or website, and do not pass them to other schools.
