Newcomer English Learners in Oklahoma City: Ready Materials, Grades 2–6

If a student new to English joins your OKCPS classroom, the ESL Newcomer Curriculum Bundle ($79.99) gives you nine ready resources for the first weeks: places and directions, the simple present and past, pronouns, word families, time and calendar, a vocabulary trainer set and grammar practice. It prints, so it suits a phone-free room, and it supports the district's English learner services rather than replacing them.

The real problem

When a newcomer joins a regular OKCPS classroom

Oklahoma City Public Schools runs Newcomer Academies for students new to the United States. In a student's first year they combine intensive English language development classes with core courses. That is the district's structure, and a classroom teacher works inside it. The practical problem shows up in your own room. A newcomer may arrive after the year started on August 11, 2026, may spend part of the day in English language development and the rest with you, or may join your class after a year at a Newcomer Academy. Either way, you have a student who needs words for the classroom, the building and the school day while everyone else works on grade-level reading. This year OKCPS teachers also prepared around science of reading standards, so your literacy block is already full. Senate Bill 139, enforced in metro districts since August 2025, keeps phones away during the day, so a student cannot lean on a phone translation app in class. What you need is short, visual, printable English that a newcomer can work on while you teach the class, and that you can check in a minute. Placement, language testing and services stay decisions for the district's English learner staff.

Why it fits

How the nine resources help in a mixed classroom

Each part targets everyday English a newcomer needs early. Use them as independent work, small-group lessons or short pull-aside practice.

  • In the Town: Places & Directions gives words for buildings and directions a student needs every day.
  • Simple Present: My Everyday Life lets a newcomer describe routines like school, meals and family time.
  • Simple Past: Stories About Yesterday helps students tell what happened over the weekend in simple sentences.
  • Time & Calendar supports reading the class schedule and dates, useful from the first week on.
  • The Vocabulary Trainer Mega Bundle for Grades 1–4 builds core words when a student's English is very new.
  • Two grammar and punctuation packs, one for Grades 1–3 and one for Grades 4–6, let you match practice to age.

Getting started

A first six weeks with a newcomer

A suggested order for a student who joins mid-semester. Talk with the district's English learner staff about what they already cover.

  1. Week 1: words for the room and the dayStart with Time & Calendar and the vocabulary trainer. Pair the student with a classmate for daily routines and keep the first pages short and visual.
  2. Week 2: the building and the townUse In the Town: Places & Directions. Walk the hallway with the worksheet in hand so the words connect to real places in your school.
  3. Weeks 3–4: talking about routinesMove to Simple Present: My Everyday Life. One short sentence a day about the student's morning gives you a quick, low-pressure check of progress without a formal test.
  4. Week 5: pronouns and word familiesAdd Pronouns & Possessive Determiners and Exploring Word Families once the student writes short sentences. Word families tie in with the phonics work your class is doing.
  5. Week 6: stories about yesterdayBring in Simple Past: Stories About Yesterday. If the student is ready, let them join a small-group retelling with sentence starters, and keep the finished page in their folder.

What to buy

Newcomer bundle, literacy packs or a Grade 3 pack

Choose the ESL Newcomer Curriculum Bundle ($79.99, parts $159.91) when a student is starting English from very little. Once a student reads simple sentences and needs grade-level practice, the Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum ($49.99, parts $95.76) gives you grammar, writing, phonics and reading packs for every grade, so you can drop back a grade or two without anyone noticing. For a single third grader, the Grade 3 ELA Pack costs $13.99. The Learning at Home Bundle ($79.99) is written for parents, so pass its name to families who want to support English at home.

Honest limits

What this bundle is not

It is not an English language development program and not written for Oklahoma. It has no Oklahoma Academic Standards codes, is not approved by the state or OKCPS, and does not replace Newcomer Academy services, language testing or a student's support plan. Check it against your district's expectations and talk to the English learner staff before relying on it. Any home-language support comes from you or the district. You supply printing. If your grade team wants to share it, message Teach Lessons first. Should it not suit your newcomer, a 7-day exchange for store credit of equal value is possible; cash refunds are not.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is this aligned with the Oklahoma Academic Standards or approved by OKCPS?

No. The bundle is not aligned with the Oklahoma Academic Standards, and neither the state nor Oklahoma City Public Schools has reviewed or approved it. It teaches general everyday English for students new to the language. Compare it with your district's English language development expectations and ask your English learner staff before you use it for anything beyond classroom practice.

Can I use it if my student also attends Newcomer Academy classes?

Yes, as extra practice in your room. Newcomer Academies combine intensive English language development with core courses in a student's first year, so the student may already work on similar topics there. Ask the ELD teacher what they are covering and pick units that repeat or extend it, rather than starting something parallel.

Does it work without devices?

Yes. The materials include worksheets, activities, slides and answer keys for print and digital classrooms, so you can print everything. That matters in a classroom following Senate Bill 139, where student phones stay away during the school day. The slides are optional, for when you teach a small group from the board.

My newcomer is in fifth grade. Is the content too young?

Some of it is aimed at younger learners, such as the vocabulary trainer for Grades 1–4, because a student new to English needs basic words first. The second grammar pack is for Grades 4–6, and topics such as the town, daily routines and stories about yesterday work for older students too. Present it as English practice, not as grade-level work.

What do I need to supply?

Paper, a printer and any picture cards or real objects you want to add. No software, accounts or translation tools come with the bundle. Keep the student's finished pages in a folder; it gives you something concrete to share with the English learner staff and with the family at conferences.

Can my whole grade team use one purchase?

The licence covers your own teaching. If several teachers at your school receive newcomers and want to share the files, send Teach Lessons a short message before buying to arrange team use. Posting the files on a shared drive or a public site is not allowed without that agreement.
