Setup Errors, Not Arithmetic Errors
Almost nobody fails these questions on the multiplication. They fail on the setup, and the setup depends on a judgment students are rarely asked to make out loud: does the answer get bigger or smaller? Six workers finish a job faster than three, so more workers means less time, and the cross-multiplication that works for kilograms of flour produces nonsense here. Business contexts make it worse by hiding the proportion inside a story. A quote for materials, a wage for a part week, a price converted between currencies, a discount taken off a discounted price: each one is a rule of three question in different clothes, and students treat them as four separate techniques to memorize. Lesson design has to make the direction decision visible before any numbers get written down.
A sequence that works
Building Reliable Proportional Reasoning
The sequence starts with the direction of the relationship and only then reaches for a method. Every lesson ends with an estimate written before the calculation, so students catch their own setup errors.
- Bigger or Smaller FirstBefore any calculation, students judge the direction of twenty short business situations. No numbers are given, only the relationship, and the class argues out the ones that split the room.

Where it goes wrong
Common Setup Traps and Fair Marking
Watch for reflex cross-multiplication. A student who writes the two fractions in the same order every time will be right on direct proportion and wrong on every inverse question, with immaculate arithmetic throughout. A second trap is the percentage of a percentage: a further ten percent off a price already reduced by twenty is not thirty percent off, and shifting that belief takes a worked counterexample rather than a rule. Rounding carried through several steps is the third, turning a correct method into a wrong invoice total. Mark in three parts: direction, setup, arithmetic. That structure tells you whether a student needs another calculation drill or a conversation about what the numbers mean.

What math do students need before starting?
Confidence with fractions and decimals, plus the ability to divide with a calculator. The unit assumes no algebra: the unitary method is written arithmetically throughout, and students who have already met equations can be shown the algebraic version in the extension pages. If your class is shaky on fractions, lesson one still works as it stands, since it asks for the direction of a relationship rather than for answers.
Is this just percentages under another name?
There is overlap, but the emphasis differs. This unit is about deciding what kind of relationship you are looking at and setting the calculation up, with percentages appearing as one application in lesson four. Classes that have already finished a full percentages and interest unit can still start at lesson one and gain the inverse proportion work, which most percentage sequences leave out completely.
Will this suit a class with a wide range of ability?
Worksheets come at four levels covering the same situations, so the class discusses one supplier quote while working at different depths. Lower levels supply the unit line and ask students to complete the scaling; the top level gives a messy quote with a redundant figure buried in it. Answer keys show the full setup for every level, which matters when you are moving between groups mid-lesson.
