The real problem

Five civilizations, eight-year-old readers, one school year

Virginia's 2023 History and Social Science Standards of Learning were planned for full implementation in 2025–26, so in the 2026–27 school year many third-grade teachers are still rebuilding units around them. Grade 3 is the ancient world year: the state's description of "The World" names ancient China, Egypt, Rome, Greece and Mali. That is five civilizations for children who are only starting to read informational text on their own. The hard part is finding passages short enough for a third grader, activities that make a pharaoh or a Roman road feel real, and enough of them to fill weeks instead of one afternoon. There is a second wrinkle. The Board's recommended grade sequence is strongly encouraged but not required, and divisions may place courses in other grades. A common pattern runs Grade 1 Virginia, Grade 2 United States, Grade 3 ancient world cultures, Grade 4 Virginia Studies, but your division's pacing guide is the document that counts.

Why it fits

How the eight units match a Grade 3 ancient world year

Four of the five Grade 3 civilizations have their own units here. Mali does not, and the Stone Age and Vikings units are extras you can use or skip.

  • Egypt gets three units: pyramids, pharaohs and the Nile, then mummies and tomb art, then hieroglyphs.
  • The Ancient Greeks unit covers the Olympics, myths and daily life in terms young readers can follow.
  • The Ancient Romans unit looks at daily life, legions and roads, with source work and slides.
  • Ancient China covers the Great Wall, silk and inventions, so your China weeks start planned.
  • Every worksheet is differentiated and comes with a reading passage and a word bank for weaker readers.
  • Each sub-unit ends with a complete answer key, which also helps a parent teaching at home.

Getting started

One way to spread the bundle across Grade 3

This is a suggested order, not a pacing guide. Fit it to the weeks your division gives social studies.

  1. Open with the Stone AgeStart with The Stone Age: Life in the Stone Age to set up the idea of looking back in time. Students get a first model for asking how people lived, worked and found food long ago.
  2. Give Egypt a longer blockTeach Ancient Egypt: Pyramids, Pharaohs & the Nile first, then add Mummies & Tomb Art and Hieroglyphs as time allows. Three units on one civilization let you go deeper or trim without losing the thread.
  3. Pair Greece with RomeTeach The Ancient Greeks and The Ancient Romans back to back so students can compare daily life, myths, sport, roads and armies. A short comparison chart you make yourself fits well between them.
  4. Teach China, then plan Mali yourselfUse Ancient China: Great Wall, Silk & Inventions as written. For ancient Mali, build lessons from your division's resources, because the bundle contains no unit on it.
  5. Keep the Vikings for a sub dayVikings: Life, Ships & Journeys sits outside the Grade 3 list, so it works as enrichment late in the year or as a ready plan for a day when a substitute covers your class.

What to buy

Which download to buy

For a Grade 3 ancient world year, start with the Ancient Civilizations Bundle at $99.99; the eight units cost $199.92 if bought one by one. If you also teach Grade 1 or 2, or homeschool children in several grades, the Elementary History Curriculum ($169.99, all 20 elementary history units, $499.80 separately) adds the then-and-now units and early American topics. The Early American History Bundle ($99.99) is closer to a Grade 2 United States focus. For a strong fourth or fifth grader who wants more, the Grades 5–6 units Life Along the Nile in Ancient Egypt and The Stone Age: Traces of Life cost $24.99 each.

Honest limits

What this bundle will not do for you

It was not written for Virginia. There is no Virginia content, no SOL codes and no unit on Mali, so compare each unit with the 2023 History and Social Science Standards of Learning and your division's pacing guide before you plan around it. You still supply Mali, any Virginia Studies material, and the printing. The licence covers your own teaching; if your grade-level team wants to share it, send Teach Lessons a short message first. If it turns out not to fit, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value. That is store credit, not a cash refund.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is this aligned to the Virginia History and Social Science SOL?

No. The bundle is not aligned to, approved for or written for the Virginia Standards of Learning, and it carries no SOL codes. It covers ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome and China, which appear in Grade 3, but it does not cover Mali. Read the 2023 standards and your division's curriculum framework next to the unit descriptions and decide yourself which lessons you will use.

Does it work for Grade 2 or Grade 4 in Virginia?

The reading level suits Grades 1–4, but the topics match a world history year best. A typical Virginia Grade 2 focuses on the United States and Grade 4 on Virginia Studies, and neither is covered here. For Grade 2, the Early American History Bundle is the closer pick. For Virginia Studies you will need state-specific material from another source.

We homeschool in Virginia. Can this be our history for the year?

It can be the history piece, with every lesson planned and an answer key for each sub-unit. Virginia's home instruction statute, Va. Code § 22.1-254.1, asks for an annual notice of intent to the division superintendent by August 15 with a list of subjects to be studied. Check your current obligations with the state or a homeschool legal resource; buying a curriculum does not settle them.

How much reading does a worksheet ask of a third grader?

Each sub-unit has a differentiated worksheet built around a detailed reading passage with a word bank. Students still building fluency can work with support while stronger readers go further alone. In early Grade 3, reading the passage aloud and talking it through with the slides first works well.

Do I have to print everything?

No. The materials are made for print and digital classrooms, and every sub-unit has slides you can project while students work on paper. The download link arrives by email right after purchase and stays in your account under Orders, so you can print one unit at a time.

Can our whole third-grade team use one copy?

The licence covers your own teaching. Use across a grade-level team or a school is possible, but send Teach Lessons a short message before you buy so that use is agreed. Please do not put the files on an open shared drive or a public site, since redistribution and public posting are not allowed.
