A Grades 1-4 ELA Year: Grammar, Writing and Vocabulary Together

How to build a full elementary ELA year from cheap grammar, writing and vocabulary packs, with a weekly routine and grade-by-grade costs.

A Grades 1-4 ELA Year: Grammar, Writing and Vocabulary Together

Quick answer: Three packs per grade — grammar, writing prompts, vocabulary — run about $11 and cover a year of the skills work, roughly four periods a week. Reading comprehension is the fourth piece and is bought separately by text. Teach the three together in one weekly cycle rather than as separate subjects, and the vocabulary shows up in the writing.

Why buy the three strands separately instead of one ELA program?

Because you will replace one of them. Every teacher ends up unhappy with one strand of a packaged program — usually the writing, sometimes the vocabulary — and then owns a $60 program of which two thirds gets used. At $2.99 to $4.99 a pack, replacing one strand costs the price of a coffee rather than a re-purchase.

The second reason is grade drift. A third grade class that arrives reading below level needs the second grade grammar pack for the first term, and a strong group needs the fourth. Buying by strand lets you mix grades without explaining to anyone why you are teaching from the wrong book.

What do I buy for each grade?

2 English Grammar Grade 2 — $2.99 Grade 2 Writing Prompts — $4.99 Vocabulary Trainer Grade 2 — $2.99

How do the three fit into one week?

Run a four-day cycle and leave the fifth for reading. Monday: the vocabulary topic, introduced with the picture pages and the matching task. Tuesday: the grammar focus, taught explicitly for fifteen minutes and practiced for fifteen. Wednesday: the writing prompt, planned with the word bank from Monday. Thursday: editing the Wednesday piece against the Tuesday grammar rule.

That last step is what makes the three strands one subject instead of three. A child who has just spent a lesson on capital letters and then hunts for missing capitals in her own paragraph has learned something a worksheet cannot teach. If you keep one thing from this article, keep Thursday.

What is not in these packs?

Systematic phonics and reading comprehension texts. The word-study packs cover patterns and morphology, but a struggling first-grade reader needs a structured phonics program, and no $3 download replaces one. Comprehension is bought by text: single stories with questions run about $2.99 each, so budget six to eight of those across the year rather than one large pack you will use twice.

Nor is there an assessment schedule. The packs include answer keys, not rubrics. Write one four-point rubric for writing in September, use it all year, and do not change it — consistency does more for a child's writing than a better rubric will.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use these with English language learners?

The vocabulary trainers were built with ESL in mind and work well below grade level. The grammar packs assume some spoken English; pair them with the grade below.

Do the writing prompts include planning templates?

From grade 3 up, yes — planning frames, word banks and editing checklists. Grades 1 and 2 use visual prompts and sentence starters instead.

Is it print or digital?

Both formats are included. The grammar and vocabulary pages print well in black and white; the writing prompts are worth printing in color if you can.

What does a full year cost for one grade?

Between $11 and $13 for the three strands, plus $18 to $24 for six to eight comprehension texts. Under $40 for the year.
