Occupational safety and health can read like a binder of rules, or it can become the most immediately relevant unit your CTE students meet all year. The difference is framing. Every one of your students will one day clock into a workplace, and most already have a part-time job. Project-based learning turns the topic from a compliance checklist into a real investigation: students study a workplace, find the hazards, and design something a real employer could use. This brief gives you the scaffolding to run that project from launch to authentic product.
The driving question and the authentic product
Anchor the project in a question students can argue about: "How would we make one real workplace measurably safer without shutting it down?" The deliverable is a professional safety audit and improvement plan for an actual site, a school kitchen, a local auto shop, a warehouse, or a family business. Teams present to a panel, ideally including someone who works in safety, and their plan has to survive real questions about cost, feasibility, and law. Connecting safety to the bigger system
Strong projects show students that safety does not sit alone. When an injury happens, who pays, and how is a worker protected while they recover? Done well, students leave able to walk into any workplace and see it the way a safety professional does, which is a skill they will use for the rest of their working lives.
