A simple circuits unit fits comfortably into half a term of Years 5-6 science in Australia: about seven lessons of 35 minutes, leaving the rest of the term for another topic. The content sits closest to the physical sciences strand of the Australian Curriculum (Version 9) for science in the upper primary years. That is a general pointer, not an alignment or endorsement claim. The plan below uses our Grades 5-6 circuits unit, where Grades 5-6 correspond to Years 5-6.
Where it fits in the year
Many schools alternate science with other learning areas from term to term, so a compact unit is useful. The book has five learning paths: light a bulb, conductors and insulators, switches, series and parallel paths, and experiment safely. Each can be taught on its own, so you can teach three paths in a short term and come back to the others later.
Students write in the student book, so print one copy per child. The simple electric circuits unit for Years 5-6 includes a teacher guide with answer guidance and a method page for each path.
A seven-lesson outline
- Experiment safely: students write five rules for their table.
- Light a bulb: draw and label a closed circuit.
- Conductors and insulators: a prediction, observation and conclusion table.
- Switches: sketch open and closed states.
- Series and parallel paths: compare two safe diagrams.
- Project: a heading, two examples and a question for another student.
- Learning check and reflection, then a short follow-up.
Each lesson follows the same pattern from the teacher guide: 5 minutes opening, where students look at the illustration without its title and note two observations and a question; 20 minutes exploring and completing Task A; and 10 minutes consolidating with an example and a counterexample.
Safety in the Australian classroom
Use only low-voltage battery equipment. The book is explicit about this, and its sample answer for the safety task is no wall power, dry hands, inspect parts, report damage and follow instructions. In Australian classrooms the wall outlet is a power point, and the plain message for students is that a power point is never part of an experiment. Check your school's guidance and your state or territory education department's advice on practical science, and keep to the equipment your school has approved.
Language and talk
For a single term, a workable pace is one path per week with a short project in the final fortnight. If your timetable gives you only a few lessons a week, pair the Observe page with a discussion in one lesson and put Task A in the next. The book is designed so that each path stands alone, so a missed lesson does not leave a student stranded in the next one. Students who were away can complete the Task A page at home or during a quiet moment, then join a partner for the consolidate discussion.
The Observe page asks students to describe three details they can see and then separate observation from inference. That habit supports the science inquiry skills of questioning and predicting, and of communicating findings. The Transfer tasks ask students to explain what is similar and what is different in a new situation, which is a short piece of reasoning in writing and a good place to practise precise vocabulary.
Australian classes often include students with varied language backgrounds. The teacher guide suggests word cards, sentence starters and a shared image description as support, and oral responses or symbol cards where writing gets in the way.
Assessment without extra marking
The project is judged on five criteria: accurate terms, examples explained well, a meaningful question, a readable layout with a useful image, and feedback applied. The learning check is a self-assessment rather than a grade, and the teacher guide suggests collecting recurring questions to plan a brief follow-up. Keep the finished projects and check sheets in a folder as a record of student thinking at the end of term.
If a student wants a cheaper extension on the same topic, the Grades 7-9 electric circuits resource goes a step further.
For a whole-year view, the science bundle includes this unit with water cycle, forest ecosystems and horses.
