Cells and microscopy is a vocabulary-dense topic taught largely through instructions. For a student still building academic English, that combination is brutal: fourteen new nouns, a practical driven by verbs like adjust, focus and mount, and a write-up that demands passive constructions nobody has taught. The content is not the barrier. The language carrying it is. What follows is the scaffolding that keeps the biology at full strength while the English catches up, for MYP Years 1 to 3.
Separate the two vocabularies before you teach either
There are two word lists in this unit and they need different handling. The technical list, such as nucleus, membrane, chloroplast, magnification, is concrete, picturable and shared across languages more often than teachers expect. Many students already hold these words in their first language, so the job is labelling, not concept building.
The second list is the one that quietly does the damage: the procedural and academic words. Adjust, gently, until, ensure, therefore, whereas, appears to. These have no picture, they are rarely pre-taught, and a student who misses "until" in a practical instruction ruins the slide. Front-load six of these per unit, on the wall, with a gesture attached to each.
Sentence frames for the three things students must say
- Describing what is observed. "Under the ___ objective, I can see ___ . The ___ appears ___ ." Observation frames must stay separate from explanation frames, or students merge the two and lose marks under criterion C for interpreting rather than reporting.
- Comparing two cells. "Both ___ and ___ have ___ . However, only the ___ has ___ , because ___ ." The connective is supplied deliberately. Students who reach for "but" every time cannot access the register the assessment rewards.
- Explaining a procedure. "First the slide is ___ . Then it is ___ so that ___ ." The passive voice is a teaching point, not an accident of style, and it is worth ten minutes of direct instruction.
Print the frames on card and leave them on the bench. Students stop using them when they no longer need them, which is the correct exit strategy and happens faster than most teachers expect. Visual scaffolds that carry meaning, not decoration
A labelled diagram is not a scaffold if the labels are the thing being learned. Use these instead. A dual-coded glossary, where each term has a sketch drawn by the student rather than a printed image. A photograph sequence of the microscope procedure with the verb printed under each step. A cut-and-match set pairing organelle with function, so students demonstrate understanding by moving card rather than by writing.
Colour-code by function rather than by structure across all your materials, so that the same idea keeps the same colour from the diagram to the slide to the exit ticket. Small consistency of that kind removes a surprising amount of processing load.
Keeping the practical work intact
The temptation is to reduce the practical for language learners. Do the opposite. Practical work is the part of the lesson where an EAL student can participate at full cognitive level without producing English, so protect it and reduce the writing around it instead.
Pair a student with an established partner and give them the equipment role first, the recording role second. Give the instructions as pictures with numbered steps and read them aloud once. A living, growing specimen makes this easier still, because observation over days generates natural repetition of the same vocabulary in different sentences. Assessing biology, not English
Write your success criteria so that a correct idea in imperfect English scores fully. Allow a labelled drawing as an alternative to a written comparison. Allow the first language for planning notes. Mark the science with one colour and give language feedback separately in another, so a student can see which of the two needs work.
Where you do want to stretch academic register, do it in a low-stakes context rather than in the assessed write-up.
