Classroom ideas for Auckland

Use these suggestions to extend your planning. Local examples and activities below are teaching ideas to add, rather than a list of files included in every product.

Pompeii and Rangitoto side by side

After the Pompeii unit, give students a two-column chart: Vesuvius in 79 AD and Rangitoto about 600 years ago. They compare what happened, who saw it and what each place looks like today. Finish by locating Rangitoto and two other volcanic centres on a map of Auckland.

A harbour for the underwater world

Before the Secret Underwater World project, show photos of rock pools and sea life from Auckland's harbours and beaches. Children base their painting on real creatures they have seen or looked up, then write two sentences explaining where in their harbour scene each creature lives.

Sound on the waterfront

In the waves unit, ask senior students to record a sound on their way to school, such as a ferry horn, traffic or wind, and use a free app to view its waveform. They identify frequency and amplitude and explain what the graph shows about the sound.

Quick answers

Questions from Auckland teachers

Do you guarantee curriculum alignment?

TeachLessons guarantees alignment with the New Zealand Curriculum. This guarantee covers the subjects, learning objectives and levels stated in each product description.

Is TeachLessons affiliated with the Ministry of Education or NZQA?

No. TeachLessons is an independent publisher and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, the Ministry of Education, NZQA or any school board. Teachers choose our resources themselves and decide how they fit their school's local curriculum and assessment plans.

Can I use these resources for NCEA?

You can use them to teach the knowledge and skills that NCEA standards assess, but they are not NCEA assessment tasks. NCEA Levels 1 to 3 remain in 2026, with changes to qualifications from 2028. Always check NZQA's current standards and your school's assessment policy before using any material for credit.

The products list US grades. Which New Zealand year levels do they suit?

A New Zealand Year level is usually one number higher than the matching US grade. Grade 3 suits Year 4, Grade 5 suits Year 6, Grades 7 to 10 suit Years 8 to 11, and Grades 9 to 12 suit Years 10 to 13. Most units are differentiated, so they cover a range.

How are the resources delivered, and can I change the spelling?

Every resource is an instant digital download that you can print or share on screen. Many units include editable files, so you can change American spellings such as color to colour and swap in local examples before printing. Answer keys come in the same download.

How can I link these units to Auckland?

Auckland's volcanoes and harbours give you ready-made local examples. Compare Pompeii with Rangitoto, base underwater art on real harbour life, or use local data in maths word problems. The ideas above give three examples you can use in a single lesson.

Planning for the 2027 school year in Auckland

With the new English and maths learning areas in place since Term 1, 2026, the curriculum framework required from 1 January 2027 and qualifications changing from 2028, planning time is stretched. Choose one unit that fills a gap in next term's programme, adapt its examples to Auckland, and build from there.
