Classroom ideas for Birmingham

Use these suggestions to extend your planning. Local examples and activities below are teaching ideas to add, rather than a list of files included in every product.

A city of trades

After the Old Trades & Crafts unit, ask Year 2 or Year 3 pupils to design a poster for one Birmingham workshop from the past. They choose a trade from the unit, draw the tools, and write three sentences on what the worker made and who bought it.

Canal inventions trail

Birmingham has 35 miles of canals. Pair the Inventions That Changed the World unit with a canal walk or map study, and ask pupils to list what boats carried and which later inventions, such as electricity, changed how goods moved.

Linear graphs from canal boats

Give Year 8 or 9 pupils a canal boat hire price made of a fixed fee plus a cost per hour. They build a table of values, plot the line and explain the gradient and y-intercept in context, using the Linear Functions unit's worksheets for practice.

Quick answers

Questions from Birmingham teachers

Do you guarantee curriculum alignment?

TeachLessons guarantees alignment with the National Curriculum for England. This guarantee covers the subjects, learning objectives and levels stated in each product description.

Is TeachLessons affiliated with Birmingham City Council or Birmingham SACRE?

No. TeachLessons is an independent publisher with no connection to Birmingham City Council, Birmingham SACRE, the Department for Education, any academy trust or any exam board. Teachers and schools choose our resources themselves and decide how they fit their own curriculum.

How do these resources fit the Phonics Screening Check and SATs?

They work as teaching and practice material alongside your school's own programme. Phonics packs give extra practice with blends, vowels and digraphs before and after the Year 1 check, and reading packs build comprehension for later years. None of them is an official test paper, so use STA materials for final practice.

Which listed grade should I choose for my class?

Add one to the listed US grade to find the rough UK year. A Grade 1 reading pack suits Year 2, and a Grades 1–4 history unit covers roughly Years 2–5. Check the preview, because a pack can also work as review for older pupils or stretch for younger ones.

What format do the resources come in?

Every resource is an instant digital download. You can print worksheets or use them on screen, and many packs include editable files and slides so you can adapt spelling, names and examples for your pupils before teaching.

Can I use these units to teach RE under the Birmingham Agreed Syllabus?

You can use them as supporting material, but your RE planning should start from the Birmingham Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education 2022. The Understanding Islam pack gives texts and a jigsaw activity on key beliefs and practices, which teachers can place wherever their scheme covers Islam.
