The real problem

Fourth grade at home under Idaho's light-touch rules

Idaho asks very little paperwork of homeschool families. Idaho Code 33-202 requires instruction in "subjects commonly and usually taught in the public schools" for children ages 7 through 16. There is no notice to start, no required records, no testing, no district approval and no parent qualifications, though written notice is recommended when withdrawing from a public school. That freedom has a flip side. With no state checklist, parents have to decide on their own what a full fourth grade year looks like and how to tell whether their child is keeping up. Families who stay in Boise School District, whose 2026–27 year began on August 12, have a different question: how to support math and reading at home without reteaching the whole day. The district also runs Boise Online School, and families using it often want offline practice to balance screen time. Grade 4 itself is demanding. Fractions become a major topic, area and perimeter show up in word problems, and writing moves from sentences to organized paragraphs. Idaho's grade 4 social studies centers on Idaho history, which a general practice bundle cannot cover, so parents should know where its edges are.

Why it fits

What a fourth grader gets from it

Short literacy practice and two real math units mean you can cover the hardest Grade 4 math topics at your own pace.

  • Fractions with Visual Models covers equal parts, numerator and denominator, comparing and fair shares.
  • Area & Perimeter teaches unit squares, formulas, compound shapes and garden problems.
  • Grade 4 math warm-ups give a quick daily start before the main lesson.
  • The Grade 4 grammar pack works on sentence structure, tenses and punctuation.
  • Writing prompts come with structure, word banks and support tools for paragraph writing.
  • English Made Easy gives parents a guide and workbook for supporting Grade 4 English.

Getting started

A ten-week plan for a Boise family

This is one way to pace the bundle. Stretch it over a semester if your child needs more time.

  1. Weeks 1–2: start with the guideRead English Made Easy and set up a short daily routine. Begin each day with a warm-up and one grammar or word study page, keeping the whole session under half an hour.
  2. Weeks 3–5: fractions unitTeach Fractions with Visual Models a few days a week. Folding paper strips or cutting a pizza drawing into equal parts makes the visual models concrete for a nine-year-old.
  3. Week 6: reading storyRead The Mystery of the Missing Map over several sittings and answer the questions. Ask your child to retell the story before checking each answer.
  4. Weeks 7–9: area and perimeterWork through Area & Perimeter. The garden problems invite a measuring session in your own yard or a nearby park, followed by drawing the shape on grid paper.
  5. Week 10: writing and reviewUse the writing prompts for a short organized piece, and finish with Math Adventure Grade 4 to review place value and decimals before moving on.

What to buy

Which Grade 4 option to buy

The 4th Grade Practice Bundle at $69.99 is the best value if you want literacy and the two key Grade 4 math units together; bought separately the ten parts cost $117.90. If you only need literacy, the Grade 4 ELA Pack ($13.99) has the grammar, writing, word study, reading story and vocabulary trainer. The Elementary Math Units Bundle ($69.99) repeats the fractions and area units but adds Numbers to 1000 and a math test prep toolkit. The Grades 3–5 Test Prep Bundle ($64.99) suits spring review and shares the Grade 4 warm-ups with this bundle.

Honest limits

Where this bundle stops

It was not written for Idaho, carries no Idaho Content Standards codes, and does not cover Idaho history, science or the other subjects Idaho public schools teach in Grade 4. It is practice plus two math units, not a full year. Idaho's homeschool rules are light, but they still expect the subjects commonly taught in public schools, so check current law with the state or a homeschool legal resource. You print everything yourself. If the bundle is not what your child needs, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Does it follow the Idaho Content Standards for Grade 4?

No. It is not aligned to the Idaho Content Standards and is not approved by the state or Boise School District. It is general Grade 4 practice written for any state. Compare its topics with what your child's class or your homeschool plan covers, and use the parts that match.

Is it enough to homeschool fourth grade in Idaho?

Not by itself. Idaho law calls for the subjects commonly and usually taught in public schools, and this bundle covers reading, writing and math only. It has no science or social studies. Plan those separately, and check current requirements with the state or a homeschool legal resource; this is not legal advice.

We use Boise Online School. Does this add more screen time?

No. The pages are meant to be printed, so your child works with a pencil away from the screen. Paper practice between online sessions or at the end of the day gives your child a break from the screen while still working on Grade 4 skills.

Does it overlap with the Elementary Math Units Bundle?

Yes. Both include Fractions with Visual Models and Area & Perimeter. If you already own the math units bundle, the Grade 4 ELA Pack may be all you need. If you own neither, compare the parts lists to decide which fits, since the Grade 4 bundle adds literacy and the math bundle adds Numbers to 1000.

How long will a fourth grader spend on it each day?

That is up to you. A warm-up plus one literacy page takes a short session, and the math units can fill a longer block on days you teach them. Treat any pacing here as a suggestion and adjust to your child; stopping while it still goes well usually helps more than finishing a page.

Can I print copies for my child's friends or a co-op?

The license covers your own teaching, so for a family that means your own children. For use in a co-op or by other families, send Teach Lessons a short message before sharing. Posting the files publicly or reselling them is not allowed under any license.
