The real problem

Two years of world history, two different courses

California splits middle school world history across two years. Under the History-Social Science Content Standards, Grade 6 is World History and Geography: Ancient Civilizations, and Grade 7 is World History and Geography: Medieval and Early Modern Times. Grade 8 turns to United States History and Geography: Growth and Conflict. The 2016 History-Social Science Framework adds detail on how each course is taught. That split creates two practical problems. In a smaller school the same teacher may carry both Grade 6 and Grade 7, which means two preps covering thousands of years. And both courses ask for historical thinking, not just facts: students should read sources, place events in time and argue from evidence. Building source sets and timelines for every society takes far longer than writing notes for a lecture. The framework also names particular societies and themes for each grade, and those lists matter when a department plans the year. Any curriculum not written for California, this one included, will match some of them and miss others. The real job is knowing which units carry the weight and where you need to fill in.

Why it fits

Which parts fit Grade 6 and which fit Grade 7

The product's content areas fall naturally across the two California courses.

  • Early civilizations and ancient societies units belong in Grade 6 Ancient Civilizations from the first weeks.
  • Classical civilizations and belief systems extend Grade 6 into the later ancient world.
  • Medieval worlds and global connections give Grade 7 a starting block for Medieval and Early Modern Times.
  • Early modern periods and cultural exchange carry Grade 7 forward, and global interactions can close the year.
  • Source, map and timeline tasks practice the historical thinking both courses expect, unit after unit.
  • Differentiated worksheets and answer keys support mixed-ability classes in both grades.

Getting started

Setting it up for your department

A suggested approach for one teacher, or a team, planning Grades 6 and 7 together.

  1. Map units to the frameworkLay the framework's Grade 6 and Grade 7 topics beside the product's unit list. Mark each topic as covered, partly covered or missing. That single page tells you where to spend your own planning time.
  2. Start Grade 6 with historical thinkingOpen with the historical thinking work on sources, maps and timelines. Students who learn to read a source in September handle ancient texts and images with more confidence later in the year.
  3. Teach the ancient units in orderMove through early civilizations and ancient societies, then classical civilizations and belief systems. Use the chronological thinking tasks to keep one class timeline growing across the year.
  4. Give Grade 7 the medieval blockAssign the medieval worlds, early modern and global interactions units to Grade 7. Students arriving from Grade 6 already know the source and timeline routines, so less time goes to re-teaching them.
  5. Fill the gaps you markedAdd your own lessons for any framework topic you marked missing, and plan Grade 8 U.S. history separately, since this product does not cover it. Smaller sets can cover single topics.

Honest limits

Honest limits for California teachers

World History Complete is a general middle school world history curriculum. It is not written for California, has no standards codes, and is not aligned with or approved under the History-Social Science Content Standards or the 2016 framework. Some societies or themes the framework names may be missing or treated briefly, and Grade 8 U.S. history is not included. You supply those lessons, plus atlases or wall maps. One licence covers your own classes; for team use, message Teach Lessons first. If it does not suit you, exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is it aligned to California's History-Social Science standards?

No. The curriculum was not written to California's standards or framework and has no state approval. Its content runs from early civilizations to global interactions, which overlaps with the Grade 6 and Grade 7 courses, but compare it topic by topic with the standards and framework before you build your year around it.

Does it cover Grade 8 U.S. history?

No. Grade 8 in California is United States History and Geography: Growth and Conflict, and this product is world history only. Use it for Grades 6 and 7, and plan Grade 8 with other materials from your district or your own collection, since none of the units cover American history topics.

Can one teacher use it for both Grade 6 and Grade 7?

Yes. The units are sequenced but can also be taught individually, so a teacher with both preps can split them between the two courses. The licence covers your own teaching across all of your classes, so one purchase serves both your Grade 6 and Grade 7 sections.

How does it handle sources?

Historical thinking runs through the units: primary and secondary sources, texts, images, maps and timelines, with tasks on cause and consequence, continuity and change, and building historical arguments. Students get repeated practice reading and weighing evidence in both grades, rather than meeting sources once in a single skills unit and then forgetting them.

Is there a discount if we buy more than one curriculum?

Code TEACHMORE15 gives 15% off when you buy two or more Complete Curriculum packages, for example World History Complete and Geography Complete. It does not apply to bundles. If several teachers in your department want to share one curriculum, contact Teach Lessons before buying to arrange team use.

Will it work for English learners?

The worksheets are differentiated and the units are suitable for mixed-ability classrooms, with slides and answer keys for whole-class teaching. The materials are in English only, so students at early levels will need your own supports, planned with the California ELD Standards your school uses.
