A 3rd Grade Homeschool Plan for Connecticut Families
A 3rd Grade Homeschool Plan for Connecticut Families
If you are homeschooling a third grader in Connecticut, the 3rd Grade Practice Bundle covers most daily reading, writing and math practice in one download: grammar, creative writing, phonics, a reading story, vocabulary, two math packs, warm-ups, a parent guide and the Numbers to 1000 unit. It is not a Connecticut curriculum and holds no state content, so you add geography and history yourself.
See the 3rd grade bundleFor a Connecticut third grader taught at home, the 3rd Grade Practice Bundle ($59.99) is a practical core for reading, writing and arithmetic practice. It has ten resources, including the Math Made Easy parent guide and the Numbers to 1000 unit. It is practice packs plus named units, not a full-year curriculum, and it does not cover geography or United States history, which Connecticut lists among required homeschool subjects.

The real problem
What Connecticut asks of a home-taught third grader
Connecticut keeps its homeschool rules short. CGS 10-184 names the subjects instruction must include: reading, writing, spelling, English grammar, geography, arithmetic, and United States history and citizenship, including the study of town, state and federal governments. It does not prescribe materials, grade-level topics or tests. Filing a notice of intent with your superintendent within 10 days of starting is optional under the Department of Education's guidelines, and it is not a request for approval. Some districts invite parents to an optional annual portfolio meeting to show instruction in the required subjects; many do not. Keeping copies of anything you submit, with proof of receipt, is the recommended habit. That will change in steps. Public Act 26-37, signed May 26, 2026, uses the term parent-managed learning. From July 1, 2027, parents withdrawing a child from public school must sign a withdrawal form in person at the district office, and from July 1, 2028, covered families file an intent-to-educate form by October 1. The real third grade problem is daily structure. Grammar, writing, word work and arithmetic all need short, regular practice, and building that from loose worksheets every week wears a parent down by November.
Why it fits
What the bundle covers from that list
Set beside the subjects in CGS 10-184, the bundle supports four of them and leaves three for you to plan.
- Grade 3 Grammar Mastery covers nouns, pronouns, sentences and punctuation for English grammar practice.
- Grade 3 Creative Writing gives structured prompts and story starters for regular writing time.
- Phonics & Word Patterns and the vocabulary trainer support word work you can tie to spelling.
- Mia and the Moonlight Garden adds a reading comprehension story with questions.
- Numbers to 1000, two practice packs and warm-ups give arithmetic practice on place value and number lines.
- Geography and United States history and citizenship are not in the bundle; plan those from other sources.
Getting started
A weekly rhythm for third grade at home
Here is one way to spread the bundle over a week. It is a suggestion; shift the days to fit your family.
- Read the parent guide firstStart with Math Made Easy before the first math lesson. It helps you explain third grade math at home, and the workbook gives your child a first set of practice pages to settle into a routine.
- Open each morning with warm-upsUse one page from the Grade 3 Math Warm-Up Worksheets each day. Five to ten minutes is enough, as a suggestion, and it shows you quickly which facts need another look that week.
- Teach Numbers to 1000 as the main unitWork through place value, comparing and ordering, number lines and word problems over several weeks. Mix in pages from the two practice packs on days your child needs more repetition.
- Alternate grammar and writing daysUse Grammar Mastery on two days and Creative Writing on two others. Have your child edit a story draft using that week's grammar point, so the two skills meet on the same page.
- Keep a simple portfolioFile one finished page per subject each week, dated. If your district asks for the optional annual review, or the new rules bring more paperwork later, your evidence of instruction is already in one place.
What to buy
Is the full bundle the right buy?
For most families the 3rd Grade Practice Bundle at $59.99 is the sensible choice; its ten parts cost $95.90 bought separately. If you already have a math program, the Grade 3 ELA Pack ($13.99) gives you just the five literacy pieces. If math is the weak spot and you want full units rather than practice packs, the Elementary Math Units Bundle ($69.99) adds fractions, area and perimeter and a test prep toolkit for Grades 3–5. The Grades 3–5 Test Prep Bundle ($64.99) is built for spring state test review, which matters less at home, since the Connecticut homeschool source we used names no testing requirement.
Honest limits
Where you still do the planning
Nothing in the bundle is written for Connecticut. It has no Connecticut history, no lessons on town or state government and no state standards codes, and it is not approved by any district. You plan geography and United States history and citizenship yourself, and you decide whether the materials fit your plan for the required subjects. Printing is on you. If you teach other families' children in a co-op, message Teach Lessons first about licence use. If the bundle is wrong for your child, exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value; there are no cash refunds.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Does this bundle meet Connecticut's homeschool requirements?
No product can promise that, and this one is not approved or endorsed by Connecticut or any district. It gives practice in reading, writing, grammar and arithmetic, four of the subjects named in CGS 10-184, but nothing in geography or United States history and citizenship. Check current law with the state or a homeschool legal resource.
Do I have to file anything with my district?
Under current Department of Education guidelines, the notice of intent is optional and is not a request for approval. Public Act 26-37 adds an in-person withdrawal step from July 1, 2027 and an intent-to-educate form from July 1, 2028. Confirm what applies to you with the state or a homeschool legal resource.
Does my third grader need to take tests?
The Connecticut homeschool source we used names no testing requirement. You can still use the warm-ups and practice packs to see progress week by week. If you want structured review, the Grades 3–5 Test Prep Bundle has ELA and math toolkits, but it is optional for home use.
Is it enough for a whole year of third grade?
It covers daily literacy and arithmetic practice plus the Numbers to 1000 unit, but it is a set of practice packs and named units, not a full-year curriculum. Most families add read-aloud books, a fractions unit later in the year, and their own geography and history plan.
Can my child work on it alone?
Parts of it, yes. Warm-ups, practice pages and the reading story suit independent time once your child knows the routine. The parent guide is written for you, and the Numbers to 1000 unit works best when you explain each new step before the practice pages.
How quickly can we start?
Right after purchase. You get a download link by email, and the files stay in your customer account under Orders. Print the first week's pages that evening and store the rest for later in the year. Nothing ships, so there is no waiting, and you can reprint any page later if a sheet gets lost.
