The real problem

First grade in Denver, at school and at home

Denver Public Schools started 2026-27 on Monday, August 24. First grade is the year reading either clicks or starts to worry parents, and the classroom day only has so many minutes for each child. Many families want a short, regular routine at home: a page of phonics, a sentence to write, a few math problems. Denver weather adds another reason to keep pages ready. On May 6, 2026, a spring snowstorm closed Denver, Aurora, Jefferson County, Boulder Valley, Douglas County and other districts, and a printed folder is easier on a closure morning than finding something new. Some families are teaching first grade themselves. Colorado's home-based education law, C.R.S. 22-33-104.5, asks for a notice of intent at least 14 days before starting and every year after, filed with any Colorado school district. Instruction runs 172 days a year, averaging four hours a day, and the statute names subjects including reading, writing, speaking, math, history, civics, literature, science and the U.S. Constitution. Testing or evaluation starts in grade 3, so first grade has none. Families may also enroll in an independent umbrella school instead. This is a summary, so confirm current rules with CDE or a homeschool legal resource.

Why it fits

How the seven parts help a first grader

The bundle mixes skill practice for your child with one guide written for you.

  • Learn to Read at Home shows a parent how to support early reading, step by step.
  • Grade 1 Phonics Writing Prompts build phonological awareness through short writing tasks.
  • Daisy the Brave Little Duck gives a first reading story with questions to talk through together.
  • English Grammar Grade 1 covers sentences, nouns, verbs and punctuation in small pieces.
  • Grade 1 Writing Prompts give sentence practice and story starters for a few minutes a day.
  • Interactive Math for Grade 1 practices numbers, operations and shapes alongside the literacy work.

Getting started

A weekly routine for a six-year-old

Short and regular beats long and rare. Treat this as a starting point and adjust it to your child.

  1. Read the parent guide firstSpend an evening with Learn to Read at Home before you start. It gives you the method, so the first sessions with your child feel calm and you know what to say when they get stuck.
  2. Monday to Thursday: fifteen minutesAlternate a phonics or grammar page with a math page. Fifteen minutes after school is plenty for most first graders, and stopping while they are still keen makes the next day easier.
  3. Friday: the reading storyRead Daisy the Brave Little Duck together over a few Fridays. Talk through the questions aloud instead of writing every answer, since talking is a big part of first grade reading.
  4. Keep a snow-day folderPrint a week of pages and keep them in a folder. When DPS closes for weather or your child is home sick, you have practice ready without logging in or planning that morning.
  5. Share with the teacherShow a few finished pages at a conference. Your child's DPS teacher can say whether you are working on the right skills. Homeschoolers can keep the pages with attendance records.

What to buy

What to buy for first grade

The 1st Grade Practice Bundle at $34.99 (parts separately $50.93) is the best start if you want literacy and math plus guidance for yourself. If you only need literacy practice, the Grade 1 ELA Pack at $12.99 gives grammar, writing prompts, phonics, the reading story and a vocabulary trainer without the math or parent guide. Families with children in several early grades can look at the Learning at Home Bundle at $79.99, which has guides for Grades 1–4. If your child is learning English as a new language, the Early ESL Starter Bundle at $27.99 may fit better.

Honest limits

What this bundle leaves out

It is practice material, not a full first grade curriculum, and it is not written for Colorado or the Colorado Academic Standards. Homeschool families still need history, civics, science and other subjects named in state law from other sources. Check it against your child's school work or the standards if exact matching matters to you. You print the pages at home. The license covers your own family. If it does not suit your child, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Does it follow the Colorado Academic Standards or DPS first grade?

No. It is general first grade practice, not aligned to the Colorado Academic Standards and not connected to the Denver Public Schools curriculum. If you want it to match your child's class, ask the teacher which skills come next this month and choose the pages that fit those skills.

Can we use it as our homeschool first grade curriculum?

It covers reading, writing and math practice, which are part of what Colorado's home-based education statute names, but not history, civics, science or the other listed subjects. Use it as one piece of your plan and check current rules with CDE or a homeschool legal resource, since this is not legal advice.

My child is just starting to read. Is that too early?

No, that is when the bundle helps most. Start with Learn to Read at Home and the phonics prompts, and keep sessions short. Leave the reading story until your child can decode simple words, then read it together, taking turns sentence by sentence and talking about the pictures.

Does my child need a tablet?

No. Every part prints at home and your child works with a pencil and paper. That keeps practice off screens and means it works on a snow day, in the car or at a grandparent's house, wherever you have the printed folder with you that week.

Can I buy only the parent guide?

Yes. Every part of the bundle is also sold on its own, including Learn to Read at Home. If you mostly want guidance and already have worksheets, that may be the better buy. The bundle saves money if you would use most of the seven parts.

What if my child does not take to it?

Within 7 days you can exchange the bundle for store credit of equal value and pick something else from the store. There is no cash refund. Read the product page and the list of parts first, so you know what each one covers before you buy.
