The real problem

A new student arrives in your DPS classroom

Denver Public Schools began 2026-27 on Monday, August 24, under Superintendent Alex Marrero, and newcomer students keep arriving all year. For a third or fifth grade classroom teacher, the first days are the hardest. The student may have little or no English, your class is mid-unit, and the district's multilingual support may take time to reach your room. You need short, clear practice the student can do at a desk while you teach the rest of the class. This year also brings a new device rule. In June 2026 the Denver school board adopted a bell-to-bell ban on personal devices under Executive Limitation 23, so phones, smartwatches, earbuds and personal tablets stay off and out of sight. The policy makes an exception for multilingual students who need a device for language access, and district-issued devices are not covered by the ban. In practice, a newcomer may still use an approved translation tool, but the core of their day is paper, talk and pictures. At the state level, English learner services fall under Colorado's English Language Proficiency Act (ELPA), administered by CDE's Office of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education. Your school's multilingual staff set the student's program; your job is daily practice that fits it.

Why it fits

What a newcomer can do with these materials

The resources move from survival language to basic grammar, which is the order most newcomers need.

  • In the Town: Places & Directions gives the words a newcomer needs to talk about school and neighborhood.
  • Simple Present: My Everyday Life lets students describe routines with the most useful tense first.
  • Simple Past: Stories About Yesterday follows once the present tense feels comfortable.
  • Time & Calendar helps a student follow the class schedule, dates and days of the week.
  • The Vocabulary Trainer Mega Bundle for Grades 1–4 builds basic word knowledge in short daily sets.
  • Two grammar and punctuation packs, Grades 1–3 and 4–6, let you match the student's level.

Getting started

The first four weeks with a newcomer

A suggested order for a classroom teacher. Coordinate it with your school's multilingual staff.

  1. Day one: a folder at the deskPrint the first pages of In the Town and the vocabulary trainer and put them in a folder at the student's desk. A newcomer with something to do settles faster than one who sits and watches.
  2. Week one: everyday wordsWork through In the Town and Time & Calendar. Pair the student with a classmate for a few minutes a day to point at pictures and say the words aloud. Keep it light and repeat often.
  3. Week two: start the present tenseAdd Simple Present: My Everyday Life. The student describes their own day in short sentences. If they use a translation device under the DPS exception, keep it for meaning, not for copying answers.
  4. Week three: pronouns and word familiesBring in Pronouns & Possessive Determiners and Exploring Word Families. These help the student read classroom texts sooner. Choose the grammar pack, Grades 1–3 or 4–6, by level rather than age.
  5. Week four: check in and adjustShare finished pages with your multilingual team or ESL teacher. They know the student's current English level and can tell you what to stress next, such as moving on to Simple Past: Stories About Yesterday.

Honest limits

Honest limits

This bundle is a set of practice materials, not an English language development program, and it does not replace the services your school provides under ELPA. It is not written for Colorado and has no Reading, Writing, and Communicating standards codes, so check it against the standards and your district's expectations. The pages are in English only, with no home-language versions. The license covers your classroom; if your multilingual team wants to share it, message Teach Lessons first. If it is not a fit, exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is this approved for DPS multilingual programs or aligned to Colorado standards?

No. It is not approved by Denver Public Schools or CDE and not aligned to the Colorado Academic Standards or to any English language development framework. Use it as classroom practice alongside the services your school provides, and ask your multilingual staff how it fits the student's plan.

The student speaks almost no English. Where should I start?

Start with In the Town and the vocabulary trainer, since they build the words a student needs to get through the school day. Use pictures and gestures, and pair the student with a patient classmate. Move to Simple Present once the basic words are in place.

Can the student use a translation app with these pages?

The DPS device policy allows an exception for multilingual students who need a device for language access, and district-issued devices are not covered by the ban. Whether a specific student uses one is set by your school. The pages themselves work on paper and do not require any device.

Does it work for a sixth grader?

Yes. The bundle runs from Grade 2 to Grade 6, and one grammar pack is written for Grades 4–6. The vocabulary trainer set is labeled Grades 1–4, so an older newcomer may move through it quickly. Choose pages by English level rather than by age or grade.

Are the materials translated into Spanish or other languages?

No. The resources are in English only. If a student benefits from home-language support, your school's multilingual staff or a family member may help, and the DPS exception allows a language-access device where the school approves it. Keep the printed pages themselves as English practice.

Can our school's ESL team share one copy?

The license is for one teacher's own teaching. If several classroom teachers and ESL staff at your school want to use the bundle, send Teach Lessons a short message before buying to ask about team use. Please do not upload the files to a shared drive or a class website.
