Florida ESOL Students in 2nd Grade: A $10.99 Practice Pack for Your Class

A low-cost way to give ESOL students in a Florida second-grade class more English practice is the Grade 2 ELA Pack: $10.99 for four sets covering grammar, writing prompts, phonics and phonological awareness, and vocabulary. It is general Grade 2 material, not an ESOL program, so it works as extra practice beside the ESOL instruction your school already provides, on the same skills the rest of the class is learning.

Quick answer

For Grade 2 ESOL students who need more practice, the Grade 2 ELA Pack ($10.99) is the smallest purchase that still covers four core skills: sentences, nouns, verbs and punctuation; sentence starters and creative writing tasks; phonics and phonological awareness; and a Grade 2 vocabulary trainer. It is written for all second graders, not for English learners specifically, and it is not an approved ESOL curriculum. Use it to add practice, not to replace your school's ESOL instruction.

The real problem

What the META Consent Decree means in a second-grade room

Florida's 1990 META Consent Decree sets the frame for English learners in every district: students who are learning English must be identified, must receive instruction they can understand, and must have equal access to the same programs as their classmates. The district decides how that happens through its ESOL model and each student's plan. But much of the school day still takes place in the regular classroom, with the regular teacher. Second grade moves fast: children are expected to write full sentences, spell common patterns and pick up more school vocabulary every week. An ESOL student who is still sorting out English sounds and sentence order can fall behind during independent work, and grade-level centers are often too wordy for them. Teachers end up hunting for short, clear practice on the same skills the class is working on, so the student does a version of the class task rather than something unrelated. That is where equal access shows up day to day: a child working on the same kind of grammar or phonics task as the table next to them is part of the lesson, not set apart from it.

Why it fits

Where the four packs fit during the school day

Each pack targets one skill, so pick the one that matches the class this week.

  • The grammar pack works on sentences, nouns, verbs and punctuation, the same building blocks the class practices.
  • Sentence starters in the writing prompts give an ESOL student a way into the class writing task.
  • Phonics and phonological awareness practice helps students who are still learning to hear English sounds clearly.
  • The Grade 2 vocabulary trainer gives short, repeatable word practice for centers or early finishers.
  • Pages print cleanly or show on screen, so one download can serve a small group at your table.

Getting started

Using the pack across a grading period

A simple rhythm that ties ESOL practice to whole-class work. Timings are suggestions.

  1. See what the student can already doBefore assigning anything, try a page or two from the phonics pack and the grammar pack with the student. You will quickly see whether to start with sounds, with sentence building, or with both at once.
  2. Set up a daily ten-minute slotPick a fixed moment, such as the start of centers, for work from the pack. Short, regular practice is easier for a seven-year-old to keep up than one long session at the end of the week.
  3. Match the grammar topic to the classWhen the class works on nouns or punctuation, give the ESOL student the matching grammar pages. They practice the same skill at their own level and can join the class discussion afterward.
  4. Use sentence starters during writingDuring writing time, the sentence starters from the writing prompts pack give the student a first line to build on. Let them say the sentence aloud to you or a partner before writing it down.
  5. Rotate vocabulary for early finishersKeep vocabulary trainer pages in a folder the student can reach on their own. It gives them something useful to do when they finish early, without waiting for you to be free.

What to buy

The right pack for your students' level

For one or a few second graders, the Grade 2 ELA Pack at $10.99 is the obvious start; its four parts cost $14.96 bought separately. If your ESOL student is working closer to first-grade level, the Grade 1 ELA Pack ($12.99) adds a reading comprehension story to grammar, writing, phonics and vocabulary. Stronger students may be ready for the Grade 3 ELA Pack ($13.99). If you support English learners across several grades, the Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum ($49.99) gives you grammar, writing and phonics packs for every grade from 1 to 6.

Honest limits

Honest limits of a general Grade 2 pack

This pack is not written for Florida and contains no state-specific content. It is not an ESOL curriculum, does not address the META Consent Decree, and does not replace your district's ESOL program or a student's plan. Check it against Florida's standards and your district's ESOL guidance yourself. It is in English only, with no home-language support, and the Grade 2 pack has no reading story, so you supply the reading texts. If your grade team wants to share it, send Teach Lessons a short message first. If it does not suit your students, you can exchange it for store credit within 7 days.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is the Grade 2 ELA Pack aligned with Florida standards or approved for ESOL?

No. It is not aligned to Florida's standards, not on any approved ESOL list and not endorsed by any district. It is general second-grade English practice. Compare the skills in it with what your district expects in Grade 2 and with each ESOL student's plan, and ask your school's ESOL contact if you are unsure how it fits.

Will it help me meet my META Consent Decree obligations?

The decree places duties on districts: identifying English learners, providing comprehensible instruction and equal access to programs. A practice pack cannot fulfill those duties, and this one makes no claim to. What it can do is give a student in your class work on the same skills as everyone else, at a level they can manage. How that fits your school's ESOL plan is a question for your district.

My student speaks almost no English yet. Is Grade 2 material too hard?

It may be. The Grade 2 pack assumes some spoken English. For a true beginner, start with the Grade 1 ELA Pack, or look at the ESL Newcomer Curriculum Bundle, which is built around everyday situations such as the town, daily routines and telling time.

Can I send pages home when school closes for a storm?

Yes. The files are yours to print for your own students, so you can put a few pages in a home folder. Florida districts from Tampa Bay to Orlando and Jacksonville closed for Hurricane Milton in October 2024, and a small packet prepared ahead of time saves a scramble. Keep it simple: one grammar page, one phonics page and one vocabulary page are plenty for a family to manage.

How quickly can I use it?

Right away. It is a digital download: you get the link by email after checkout, and it also stays in your customer account under Orders. Print the pages you need tonight or show them on screen tomorrow morning. There is nothing to ship and nothing to wait for.

Can my whole second-grade team use it?

A single purchase is for your own teaching. If your grade-level team or ESOL department wants to use it together, send Teach Lessons a short message first and team use can be arranged. Please do not post the files on a website, a public class page or an open shared folder, and do not resell them.
