2nd Grade ELA Worksheets Pack for Grammar, Writing and Phonics

A second grade ELA worksheets pack should cover the skills that grow fastest this year: longer sentences, spelling patterns and new words. This one does that in four parts, grammar, writing prompts, phonics and a vocabulary trainer, for $10.99. It has no reading story, so keep your own books for comprehension and use the pack for the skills practice around them.

Quick answer

The Grade 2 ELA Pack is $10.99 for four Grade 2 resources: English Grammar Grade 2 (sentences, nouns, verbs and punctuation), Grade 2 Writing Prompts with sentence starters and creative tasks, a Grade 2 Phonics & Phonological Awareness pack, and an English Vocabulary Trainer for Grade 2. Separately the four would cost $14.96. It is a skills pack without a reading story, meant for short practice in class, in tutoring or at home.

The real problem

Second graders are writing more than they can spell

In second grade, children start to want to say more than their spelling and grammar can hold. A story that was one sentence in first grade turns into five, with run-ons, missing periods and invented spellings that show what the child hears but not yet the pattern. That is real progress, and it is exactly where practice pays off. The tricky part for a teacher is the spread. Some children have vowel teams and blends down and are ready for word families; others still mix up short vowels. Some fill a page; others freeze at a blank line. One worksheet for everyone either bores half the room or loses the other half. Tutors and parents meet the same thing in miniature. A second grader who reads well can still struggle to write a clear sentence, and one who writes happily may avoid reading. Each skill needs its own short practice, pitched at second grade rather than a first-grade review or a third-grade stretch. Vocabulary is the quiet one in the mix. Children who meet more words now have more to draw on when they write, but word practice is usually the first thing dropped when the week gets busy.

Why it fits

Four parts, one for each skill

The pack keeps each skill separate, which makes it easy to give a child the page that matches their gap.

  • English Grammar Grade 2 practices sentences, nouns, verbs and punctuation for children writing longer texts.
  • Grade 2 Writing Prompts offer sentence starters for hesitant writers and creative tasks for keen ones.
  • The Grade 2 Phonics & Phonological Awareness pack supports spelling and decoding practice at this level.
  • The English Vocabulary Trainer for Grade 2 keeps word work in the week when time is short.
  • Four separate parts let you give one child grammar and another phonics at the same table.
  • Pair it with your own read-alouds and library books, since the pack has no reading story.

Getting started

How to fold the pack into a second-grade week

A suggested pattern for a classroom literacy block or home practice. Ten to fifteen minutes per session is plenty.

  1. Pick the skill gap firstLook at a recent piece of the child's writing. Missing periods point to the grammar pack, odd spellings to phonics, flat sentences to the writing prompts. Start where the gap is clearest.
  2. Two short phonics sessionsUse the Phonics & Phonological Awareness pack twice a week. Say the words aloud before writing them, so the child connects the sound pattern to the spelling.
  3. One grammar page, then apply itAfter a grammar page, ask the child to fix one sentence in their own writing using the same rule. That transfer is what makes the practice stick.
  4. A prompt at the end of the weekGive a sentence starter or a creative task from the Writing Prompts and let the child write freely. Mark only one thing: the skill you practiced that week.
  5. Words on the sideRun the Vocabulary Trainer in spare minutes, at the start of the day or while you read with a group. Bring the new words into your read-aloud conversations.

What to buy

Which pack fits your second grader

For a Grade 2 class or child, the Grade 2 ELA Pack at $10.99 is the right size; the four parts cost $14.96 separately. If your second grader is still catching up on first-grade skills, the Grade 1 ELA Pack ($12.99) includes a reading story, Daisy the Brave Little Duck. A child who is racing ahead may be ready for the Grade 3 ELA Pack ($13.99). For a mixed group or several children at home, the Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum ($49.99) covers grammar, writing and phonics for every grade from 1 to 6, with six reading stories.

Honest limits

Honest limits of a four-part pack

The pack has no reading comprehension story and no leveled books, so you need your own texts for reading. It is not a full Grade 2 ELA program and is not built around Common Core or any one state's standards; compare its skills with what your school or state expects. Printing, pencils and some patience come from you. The licence covers your own class or children; if your grade team wants to share it, send Teach Lessons a short message first. If it does not suit you, exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Does it follow Common Core or my state's second grade standards?

It is not aligned to, mapped against or approved under Common Core or any state standards, and the pages carry no standards codes. The skills are typical second-grade work, but whether they match your state's expectations is something to check yourself, using your state's ELA standards or your district's Grade 2 outline.

Why is there no reading story?

The Grade 2 pack is made of four skills packs, and none of them is a reading comprehension story. If you want a story with comprehension work, the Grade 1 and Grade 3 packs each include one, and the Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum has six. You can also pair the pack with any book your child or class is already reading.

Is it enough for a homeschool year of ELA?

Not on its own. It is a practice pack for grammar, writing, phonics and vocabulary, and a full homeschool ELA year also needs reading, read-alouds and more writing. Use it as one part of your plan. Homeschool rules differ by state, so confirm your state's current requirements with the state or a homeschool legal resource.

Can I use it with a struggling third grader?

Yes, as targeted review. A third grader who still struggles with spelling patterns or sentence punctuation can work through the phonics and grammar parts before moving on to the Grade 3 pack. Present it as practice for one skill rather than as a lower-grade book, and move up as soon as the gap closes.

Can I print just one part for one child?

Yes. You receive the four parts as separate digital downloads, so you can print the phonics pack for one child and the grammar pack for another. The licence lets you make copies for your own students or children; just do not post or share the files outside your class or family.

What happens after I pay?

The download link arrives by email straight away, and the files are saved under Orders in your customer account. If you lose the email, log in and download them again. If the pack is not a fit, you have 7 days to exchange it for store credit of equal value.
