The real problem
From service to the classroom, quickly
Florida's military veterans pathway lets qualifying veterans who do not hold a four-year degree earn a five-year temporary teaching certificate, and the pathway requires a mentor. That is a real door into teaching, and it opens quickly. Many veterans arrive with leadership experience and discipline, yet without coursework in lesson design. The first months show where that gap sits. Knowing the content is not the same as writing a lesson. You need a hook for twelve-year-olds, a text they can actually read, a task that makes them think, a way to check understanding, and an answer key so grading does not eat every evening. Your mentor can coach you on routines and classroom management, but will not have time to write your lessons for you. History adds its own demands. Middle schoolers need sources broken down, vocabulary explained, and topics that feel connected to their lives. Building all of that from nothing while also learning the gradebook, school policy and a hundred student names can wear a new teacher down. Units with that structure in place let you put your energy into teaching and into whatever your mentor asks you to work on.

Getting started
Working the units into your first year
A suggested approach. Your school's pacing guide and your mentor's input decide the order.
- Review the bundle with your mentorIn an early meeting, go through the nine resources together and mark which topics fit your course. A mentor who knows the school can tell you where each unit belongs in the year.
- Start with the Medieval Plague unitIt comes with reading scaffolds, source analysis, roleplay, timelines and rubrics, so it shows you clearly how a complete history unit is put together. Use it as your model for the others.
- Prepare one unit aheadRead the next unit's materials a week before you teach it. Note vocabulary students will need and spots where an example from your own experience could make a point land.
- Grade with the keys, then reflectUse the answer keys to grade quickly and note which questions students missed most. Bring those notes to your mentor so feedback rests on real student work.
- Keep a file for next yearAfter each unit, save what you changed and what you would do differently. With a five-year temporary certificate, the lessons you refine now can serve you for several years.

Honest limits
Honest limits before you buy
These units were not written for Florida. There is no Florida history content and no reference to Florida's social studies standards, so check the topics against those standards and your school's course description. The bundle has nothing to do with certification and does not replace your mentor or district training. You still plan the order, adapt for your students and print or post the materials. The license covers your own classes; a department sharing one copy should message Teach Lessons first. If it does not fit, exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Do these units match Florida's social studies standards?
They are not aligned to, endorsed by or approved under Florida's standards, and no district has reviewed them. They are general Grades 7–9 history resources. Compare each unit with your course description and Florida's social studies standards, and ask your mentor or department head where they fit.
Does using these count toward my temporary certificate?
No. The units are teaching material only and have nothing to do with certification requirements. Questions about the veterans pathway, your five-year temporary certificate or your mentoring arrangement should go to your district or the state's educator certification office. They can tell you exactly what applies to your situation.
I have no teaching background. Can I teach these as written?
They are built to be ready to teach, with worksheets, activities and answer keys, and the Medieval Plague unit adds rubrics and reading scaffolds. You will still want to read each unit in advance and talk it through with your mentor, especially for your first few lessons, when every routine is still new to you and your students.
Are sensitive topics handled carefully?
Topics such as migration, the Black Death and U.S. presidents are presented factually for middle school students. Preview each one, think about your particular class, and follow your school's guidance on how to frame discussion of current or contested subjects. Your mentor can help you decide.
Can I use the units with struggling readers?
The Medieval Plague unit has differentiated worksheets and texts with reading scaffolds, which helps with mixed reading levels. For the other units you may need to add your own support, such as reading key passages aloud, pre-teaching vocabulary or pairing stronger and weaker readers for the source tasks.
How soon can I start?
Right away. The files are available immediately after purchase, by email and in your account under Orders, so you can look through them before your next mentor meeting and arrive with a plan for the first unit instead of a blank page and a list of questions.
