The real problem
Fourth grade in Florida asks a lot at once
In Florida, fourth grade is the year of Florida history (course #5021060): exploration and colonization, the state's growth, and the 20th century and beyond. At the same time, the B.E.S.T. ELA and math standards, in place for all grades since 2022–23, keep raising the bar in reading, writing and fractions. A parent sitting next to a nine-year-old in the evening feels that squeeze. Homework covers one skill, the next week moves on, and the gaps in fractions or paragraph writing stay where they were. For families who have chosen home education under s. 1002.41, F.S., the pressure looks different. You keep a portfolio: a log of educational activities that lists reading materials, plus samples of your child's work, kept for two years. Each year you file an evaluation chosen from five options, such as a certified-teacher portfolio review or a nationally normed test given by a certified teacher. So you need practice that produces real, dated work samples. Weather is the last factor. DCPS was closed October 9–11, 2024, for Hurricane Milton, and a few printed pages at home keep a lost week from going blank.
Why it fits
What each part does for a Jacksonville fourth grader
The bundle is practice packs plus two full math units. These are the pieces that matter most at home.
- Fractions with Visual Models builds equal parts, numerator and denominator, and comparing fractions with pictures first.
- Area & Perimeter uses unit squares, formulas, compound shapes and garden problems a child can sketch out.
- The Grade 4 Grammar Pack covers sentence structure, tenses and punctuation in short practice pages.
- Writing prompts come with word banks and support tools, and finished pieces make dated portfolio samples.
- The Mystery of the Missing Map gives a reading comprehension story for longer, focused reading.
- English Made Easy tells you, the parent, how to support English work when you are not a teacher.
Getting started
A school-year rhythm for home practice
Here is one way to use the bundle across the year. Adjust it to the homework load or your home education schedule.
- August to October: warm-ups and grammarStart each session with a Grade 4 math warm-up, then one grammar page. Keep it to about twenty minutes on school nights so practice stays a habit, not a fight.
- Fall: fractions with picturesWork through Fractions with Visual Models when your child's class reaches fractions, or earlier if fractions are already shaky. Drawing each fraction before writing it helps the idea stick.
- Winter: writing and word studyUse a writing prompt once a week and keep the finished pieces. Home education families can date them and file them as portfolio samples with the reading log.
- Spring: area, perimeter and decimalsMove to Area & Perimeter and the place value to decimals pack. Garden problems make a good weekend task, because your child can measure a real patch of yard.
- Early on: read the parent guideRead English Made Easy near the start of the year. Knowing how to help with English work makes every other literacy page in the bundle easier to support.
What to buy
The full bundle or one piece of it
Buy the 4th Grade Practice Bundle ($69.99, parts $117.90) if you want literacy and math covered from one download. If math is fine and only reading and writing need work, the Grade 4 ELA Pack costs $13.99 (parts $19.95) and holds the grammar, writing, phonics, reading story and vocabulary trainer. If your child needs math across Grades 3–5, the Elementary Math Units Bundle ($69.99, parts $99.96) adds Numbers to 1000 and a Math Test Prep & Assessment Toolkit to the fractions and area units. For spring review, look at the Grades 3–5 Test Prep Bundle ($64.99).
Honest limits
Honest limits for Florida families
This bundle was not written for Florida. It contains no Florida history, which is the Grade 4 social studies course, and no B.E.S.T. benchmark codes, and it is not approved by the state or DCPS. Compare it with what your child's teacher or your evaluator expects. It is practice plus two math units, not a full fourth grade curriculum, so science and social studies come from elsewhere. You supply printing and paper. Use is licensed for your own family; a co-op or tutor group should message Teach Lessons first. If it does not fit, exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Is this aligned with Florida's B.E.S.T. standards?
No. The bundle is not aligned with B.E.S.T., not endorsed by the state and not approved by Duval County Public Schools. It covers common fourth grade skills such as grammar, fractions and area. If you need it to match B.E.S.T. benchmarks for an evaluation or for school support, check each unit against the benchmarks yourself or ask your child's teacher which skills matter most this year.
Can I use it for my Florida home education portfolio?
You can use it for instruction and keep the finished pages as work samples. Florida's home education law asks for a log that lists reading materials and samples of work, kept for two years. Whether the work is enough for your evaluator is their call. Check current rules with the district or a homeschool legal resource; this is a summary, not legal advice.
Does it include Florida history?
No. Florida history (course #5021060) is the fourth grade social studies course, and nothing in this bundle covers it. You will need separate materials for exploration, colonization and the growth of Florida. The bundle covers English language arts and math practice only, so plan the social studies year from another source.
How many sessions a week make sense?
That is up to you. A warm-up and one page fit a short sitting, and the two math units can run over several weeks each. As a suggestion, three or four short sessions a week on school nights keep skills moving without crowding out homework. Weekends work well for the longer garden and area problems.
Will it work if my child is behind in math?
Often, yes. Fractions with Visual Models starts from equal parts and pictures, and Area & Perimeter starts with unit squares before formulas. If place value is still unsure, begin with the place value to decimals pack. The Numbers to 1000 unit in the Elementary Math Units Bundle is a gentler step back if you need one.
What happens after I pay?
You get a download link by email right away, and the files also appear in your customer account under Orders. Print what you need for the week. If the bundle turns out not to suit your child, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value. Store credit is not a cash refund.
