The real problem

Third grade decisions for Louisville families this fall

Jefferson County Public Schools opened 2026–27 on Thursday, August 6, 2026, and by mid-October most third graders have settled into the year, or shown where they are struggling. Third grade asks a lot: longer texts, written answers in full sentences, and math that moves from adding to place value in the hundreds and early multiplication. Some families are also weighing schools for next year, and JCPS is holding its Showcase of Schools on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center. Others are already home schooling or thinking about it. In Kentucky, a home school operates as a private school. Families send a notice of attendance to the local board of education each year, traditionally within two weeks of the district's start, keep attendance and scholarship reports, and teach at least 1,062 hours over at least 170 days. The listed subjects are reading, writing, spelling, grammar, history, mathematics, science and civics, taught in English. Whichever route you take, a third grader needs regular, short practice in reading and math, and a parent who can explain a place value question without guessing.

Why it fits

What each part does for a third grader

The ten parts split roughly evenly between literacy and math, so subjects can alternate through the week.

  • Nouns, pronouns, sentences and punctuation get practiced in Grammar Mastery, ready for written answers.
  • Structured prompts and story starters in Creative Writing push toward longer pieces.
  • Word pattern pages and the vocabulary trainer build spelling, one of Kentucky's listed home school subjects.
  • Mia and the Moonlight Garden gives a reading story with comprehension questions.
  • The Numbers to 1000 unit is a complete unit on place value, comparing and ordering, and number lines.
  • Parents get their own help in Math Made Easy, a guide with a workbook for Grade 3 math.

Getting started

A practical month with the bundle

Four weeks as a starting suggestion. If you home school, the log in the last step also helps with Kentucky's attendance reports.

  1. Parent guide before math pagesSpend an evening with Math Made Easy before your child touches the math pages. It gives you the words and steps to explain place value and number problems calmly.
  2. Week one: Numbers to 1000Work through the opening part of Numbers to 1000, beginning each session with a Grade 3 warm-up. Number lines drawn on scrap paper help with comparing and ordering.
  3. Week two: reading and grammarSpread Mia and the Moonlight Garden across several evenings and answer the questions. Add a short grammar page on the days your child reads less.
  4. Week three: writing and spellingPick a creative writing prompt and spread the draft over a few days. Use Phonics & Word Patterns pages to practice the words your child misspelled.
  5. Week four: practice packs and a logUse Independent Math Practice for review and note what you covered each day. Home schoolers can turn that note into their attendance and scholarship records.

What to buy

Choosing your Grade 3 purchase

The 3rd Grade Practice Bundle at $59.99 makes sense when you want reading and math handled together; bought part by part, the ten resources add up to $95.90. Literacy alone is cheaper in the Grade 3 ELA Pack ($13.99), with grammar, creative writing, phonics, the Mia story and a vocabulary trainer. Math-focused families can pick the Elementary Math Units Bundle ($69.99): Numbers to 1000 plus full units on fractions and on area and perimeter, and a test prep toolkit. When spring testing is the main worry, look at the Grades 3–5 Test Prep Bundle ($64.99), which is review material for that season.

Honest limits

Honest limits before you order

Kentucky and JCPS played no part in how the bundle was written, and it carries no Kentucky Academic Standards codes, so set it beside your child's classwork or your home school plan. It covers reading, writing and math; history, science and civics, which Kentucky lists for home schools, are not included. A whole third grade year it is not. You supply printing and paper. The licence is for your own family. If it does not suit your child, exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Does this bundle match the Kentucky Academic Standards for Grade 3?

No. The bundle was written without reference to Kentucky, has no alignment to the Kentucky Academic Standards, and has not been endorsed or approved by Kentucky or Jefferson County Public Schools. To keep home practice close to the class, compare the pages with the Kentucky Academic Standards for Reading and Writing and ask your child's teacher what comes next.

Could this be the core of a Kentucky home school year?

It can cover part of reading, writing, spelling, grammar and math. Kentucky also lists history, science and civics, so you would add other materials for those. Your local board of education or a homeschool legal organization can confirm what is required now; nothing on this page is legal advice.

What does Kentucky expect for records?

Home schools in Kentucky keep attendance and scholarship reports, which are report cards comparable to local public schools, and teach at least 1,062 hours over at least 170 days. A simple daily log of completed pages helps with both. A homeschool legal organization can confirm the details.

Is the social studies for third grade included?

No. Kentucky's Grade 3 social studies theme is Global Interactions, and this bundle does not address it. If you want history alongside, the Elementary History Curriculum and the Ancient Civilizations Bundle have Grades 1–4 units you can look at separately. Home schoolers will need history and civics material either way.

We are visiting the Showcase of Schools. Should we wait to buy?

That depends on your plans. The bundle works for a child staying in JCPS and for one moving to home school, so it does not lock you into either choice. If you buy and it turns out not to fit, the 7-day store credit exchange applies.

What do we receive and when?

All ten resources arrive as a digital download right after purchase. The link comes by email, and the files are saved in your customer account under Orders, which means a fresh set of warm-ups is always one print away. Nothing ships by mail and there is no waiting period.
