Michigan Personal Finance Half Credit: Ready Starter Units for Your Course
If you have been handed Michigan's new half-credit personal finance course, the Personal Finance Starter Bundle gives you the opening weeks ready to teach: a course launch lesson, money values, SMART goals, a money mindset quiz, debt prevention, and percentages and interest. At $59.99 it is a starter, not the whole half credit, so you build the rest of the semester around it.
Open the finance starter bundleThe Personal Finance Starter Bundle ($59.99) contains six resources for Grades 9–12: a Day 1 course overview with slides, workbook and notes; a Wheel of Life lesson on money and values; a SMART financial goals lesson; a Money Mindset Quiz; a unit on handling money and avoiding debt; and a percentages and interest unit. It gives a Michigan personal finance teacher a structured opening, but it is not a complete half-credit course and is not approved for the requirement.

The real problem
What the Michigan requirement asks of a personal finance teacher
Under MCL 380.1278a, Michigan students who entered grade 8 in 2023 or later, the class of 2028 onward, need one-half credit in personal finance to graduate. Locally, districts decide whether that half credit also counts toward a half credit of math, arts, or a language other than English, so the same course can sit in different departments in neighboring districts. An MDE-approved formal CTE program aligned to the personal finance content expectations can also fulfil the credit, which means some students reach it through area career centers or local CTE programs rather than a standalone class. For the teacher, this usually means a new prep with little lead time. Many personal finance courses are being taught by business, math or social studies teachers who have never run one. The first weeks matter most: students arrive with very different ideas about money, and if the opening feels like a math worksheet or a lecture, you lose them. You need lessons that connect money to what students actually care about, then move into goals, debt and interest without a gap.
Why it fits
How the six parts support a Michigan half-credit course
Each resource has a clear job in the first part of a semester course. Here is what each one brings.
- The Day 1 lesson gives you slides, workbook and notes for the first class of a new course.
- The Wheel of Life lesson ties money decisions to students' own values before any numbers appear.
- SMART Financial Goals turns vague wishes like a car or college into plans with steps and dates.
- The Money Mindset Quiz sorts students into saver, spender, avoider or investor, an easy discussion opener.
- Handling Money and Debt Prevention covers spending habits and avoiding debt in a full unit.
- Percentages and Interest suits districts that count the half credit toward math, with discounts, tax and simple interest.
Getting started
Suggested opening for a semester course
Here is one way to sequence the bundle at the start of a Michigan half-credit course. You add later units on topics such as banking, credit and investing from your own sources.
- Day 1: launch the courseTeach the course overview lesson with its slides and workbook. Students get the course map and set up a notebook they will use for the whole semester.
- Week 1: values and mindsetRun the Wheel of Life lesson, then the Money Mindset Quiz. Students compare their results in small groups and write one sentence about a money habit they want to change.
- Week 2: goalsUse the SMART Financial Goals lesson so each student writes one short-term and one long-term goal. Keep these to revisit at the end of the course.
- Weeks 3–4: money and debtTeach Handling Money and Debt Prevention. Ask students to connect the debt scenarios to the goals they set in week two, so the unit feels personal rather than abstract.
- Weeks 5–6: interestFinish the opening with Percentages and Interest. If your district counts the course toward math, this unit carries much of the calculation practice for the first half.
What to buy
Which finance set suits your Michigan course
For a standalone personal finance half credit, start with the Personal Finance Starter Bundle at $59.99; the parts cost $78.94 separately. If your course sits in a CTE program, the Career Readiness Curriculum Bundle ($99.99, parts $199.92) adds résumés, interviews, workplace communication and AI at work, but note it shares the debt prevention unit with the starter bundle. A math-credit version can add the Everyday & Financial Math Bundle ($49.99, parts $69.97), which also has a percentages and interest unit, so compare parts lists. Business and accounting teachers can look at the Accounting & Economics Fundamentals Bundle ($109.99, parts $224.91).
Honest limits
What you still need to plan yourself
This bundle covers the opening of a course, not a full half credit. It is not written for Michigan, contains no reference to the state's personal finance content expectations, and is not approved for the graduation requirement or for any CTE program, so check it against MDE guidance and your district's course outline. Topics such as banking, credit reports, taxes in depth, insurance and investing need other materials. The licence covers your own classes; if your whole department wants it, message Teach Lessons first. Within 7 days you can exchange it for store credit of equal value, not a cash refund.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Does this bundle cover Michigan's personal finance graduation credit?
No. It is not approved or endorsed for the requirement under MCL 380.1278a, and it is a starter of six resources, not a semester course. Use it for the opening weeks and check the full course against MDE's personal finance guidance and your district's outline. Your district decides what counts toward the half credit.
Can it work in a course that counts toward math credit?
Partly. The Percentages and Interest unit gives real calculation work with discounts, tax and simple interest. If your district counts the half credit toward math, you will likely need more quantitative units; the Everyday & Financial Math Bundle adds business maths and ratio work, though it repeats the interest unit.
Is it suitable for a CTE program?
The units can be taught inside a CTE class, but they are not approved as part of any MDE-approved CTE program. If students are meant to meet the requirement through a formal CTE program, your program coordinator decides which materials fit. The Career Readiness bundle is closer to typical CTE content.
How long will the bundle last in class?
That depends on your pace and how much discussion you allow. As a rough suggestion, it fills the first several weeks of a semester course. The quiz and values lessons are short; the two full units take longer. Plan the rest of the half credit separately.
Do students need computers or apps?
No software or accounts come with the bundle, and none are required by the materials. The worksheets work on paper or in a digital classroom you already run. If you want students to use online calculators or bank simulators, you choose and add those yourself, using whatever devices your school already provides.
Can I preview before buying?
The product page lists every part and shows sample pages. Each part is also sold on its own and linked from the bundle page, so you can open the individual listings too. If the bundle turns out not to suit your course, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit.
