The real problem
Where accounting and economics sit in New York high schools
Every New York diploma needs a half credit of Economics within its four social studies credits, so economics is taught in every high school. Accounting tends to live elsewhere, in a business department or a CTE program. NYSED-Approved CTE Programs require at least 3.5 units of CTE credit, including a half unit of Career and Financial Management, along with work-based learning and a technical assessment. Students who complete one can earn a Technical Endorsement on the diploma, and the programs are also used for the 4+1 CTE Pathway to Graduation. Two more changes matter as of 2026–27. In March 2026 the Board of Regents amended section 100.2 of the Commissioner's Regulations to require personal finance instruction by the end of Grades 4, 8 and 12, phased in for Grades 5–12 starting this school year; it is an instruction requirement, not a new graduation credit. And NYSED plans to phase out the Regents exam graduation requirement starting with the class of 2028. For a business teacher, the daily problem is more basic: accounting and economics lessons a 16-year-old can follow, with enough practice that journal entries and balance sheets stop feeling abstract. Writing worksheets and answer keys for every topic yourself takes time a CTE teacher rarely has.
Why it fits
How the nine units serve New York business classes
The bundle splits into an accounting half and an economics half, so different courses can use different parts.
- Journal entries, the income statement and the balance sheet build the bookkeeping core of an accounting course.
- Cost accounting and costing fundamentals show students how a business works out what its products cost.
- Business math with rule of three and percentages gives students the arithmetic the accounting units depend on.
- Supply and demand, market structures and the business cycle suit lessons in the half-credit Economics course.
- The marketing mix unit fits business and marketing classes inside a CTE program of study.
- Units on costs, prices and percentages can support the money side of Career and Financial Management.
Getting started
One way to sequence the units
A suggestion for a semester business or accounting class. Economics teachers can lift the market units on their own.
- Start with the mathTeach business math with rule of three and percentages first. Students who are shaky with percentages will struggle with every financial statement that follows, so this unit pays off later.
- Bookkeeping in orderMove through journal entries, then the income statement, then inventory and the balance sheet. Each builds on the one before, so keep that order even if you shorten a unit.
- Costs, then pricesTeach cost accounting next, then supply and demand, so students see prices from inside the business first and from the market second. The contrast makes both units clearer.
- Markets and marketingUse market structures and the marketing mix to connect the numbers to real business decisions about competition, products and pricing. Local businesses your students know make good examples here.
- End with the business cycleClose with the economic and business cycle unit. It links one firm's books to the wider economy, and it also works as a stand-alone unit in an Economics course.
What to buy
Choosing among the business bundles
For accounting and economics content, the Accounting & Economics Fundamentals Bundle at $109.99 (parts $224.91) is the one to buy. If your CTE program needs job and workplace skills, the Career Readiness Curriculum Bundle ($99.99, parts $199.92) covers money and debt, résumés and interviews, professional email, presenting, customer conversations, teamwork and AI at work. For New York's personal finance instruction, the Personal Finance Starter Bundle ($59.99, parts $78.94) opens a course with values, goals, debt and interest lessons. Students who need more percentage practice can use the Everyday & Financial Math Bundle ($49.99, parts $69.97), which includes the same business math unit.
Honest limits
What the bundle will not do for you
It is nine units, not a full course, and it carries no New York content, CTE program standards or Regents material. It is not aligned to, or approved for, any NYSED-Approved CTE program, technical assessment or Career and Financial Management. Compare it with your program's requirements and your district's course outline before planning. Calculators and any accounting software are yours. One licence covers your own classes; for department or program use, message Teach Lessons first. If it does not fit, exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value; there are no cash refunds.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Does this meet NYSED requirements for an approved CTE program?
No. It is not aligned to, approved or endorsed for any NYSED-Approved CTE program, technical assessment or New York course, and using it does not count toward the 3.5 units of CTE credit by itself. It is a set of ready units you can teach inside a course your school runs. Check it against your program's requirements.
Can I use it for the half-credit Economics course?
Partly. Market structures, supply and demand and the business cycle suit an economics course, and cost accounting adds a business view of prices. The accounting units go further than an economics course usually needs. Check the units against your district's Economics outline and add the topics it covers that the bundle does not.
Does it cover New York's new personal finance instruction?
Not directly. The amended section 100.2 requires personal finance instruction by the end of Grades 4, 8 and 12, phased in for Grades 5–12 from 2026–27. This bundle is about accounting and markets. For personal finance lessons, look at the Personal Finance Starter Bundle, and confirm with your district how it plans to meet the requirement.
Is it pitched right for Grades 10–12?
It is written for Grades 10–12. Business math comes first, so students who need a refresher on percentages get one before the financial statements. Strong students can move quickly through the early worksheets while others take the full practice. The answer keys let you check both groups without extra prep.
Do students need accounting software?
No software is included, and the units are built on worksheets, slides and answer keys. If your program already uses accounting software, you can run it alongside the units for extra practice, but the lessons do not depend on it. Calculators are enough for the worksheets.
Can our CTE department share one copy?
Send Teach Lessons a short message before sharing. Team or school use is possible after that, and questions about how your school wants to purchase can go in the same message. Without that message, the licence covers one teacher's own classes only, and files should not go on a shared drive.
