The real problem
Ohio's elementary standards are in transition
Ohio elementary teachers are working between two sets of standards. The 2018 Ohio's Learning Standards for Social Studies give each grade a theme: Grade 1 is Families Now and Long Ago, Near and Far; Grade 2 is People Working Together; Grade 3 is Communities: Past and Present, Near and Far; Grade 4 is Ohio in the United States. In July 2026 the state updated the K–8 standards, with district implementation to begin in 2027–2028. The new Grade 4 pairs Ohio past, present and future, including American Indians in the Ohio Country and statehood in 1803, with early civilizations. Grade 5 then turns to early civilizations of the Western Hemisphere, and Grade 6 to the Eastern Hemisphere: India, Egypt, China and Mesopotamia. For a Grade 4 teacher that means a new ancient world strand to prepare, probably while the district is still rewriting its maps. Teachers in Grades 1–3 face a different question: whether a short look at ancient Egypt or the Romans still has a place inside a then-and-now theme. Either way, young learners need this content concrete and visual, with pictures, objects and short readings, and that takes real time to build from nothing.
Why it fits
Using the bundle in an Ohio elementary year
These are placement ideas, not alignment. Read the 2026 standards and your district's plan before choosing units.
- Grade 4 teachers preparing for the 2027–2028 change get a ready early civilizations strand now.
- Ancient Egypt, Hieroglyphs and Mummies & Tomb Art give Grade 4 a deep Egypt block.
- The Stone Age unit offers a concrete Grade 1 or 2 look at how people lived long ago.
- Ancient China's Great Wall, silk and inventions suit a then-and-now lesson on how inventions change daily life.
- Reading passages come with word banks and differentiated worksheets, which helps early readers in Grades 1 and 2.
- Slides for every sub-unit help a homeschool parent present each lesson without extra preparation.
Getting started
Preparing a Grade 4 early civilizations strand
A suggested path for a Grade 4 classroom; teachers in Grades 1–3 can pick single units instead.
- Read the 2026 Grade 4 standardsLook at how the new standards pair Ohio history with early civilizations, and ask your district when its revised map takes effect. Implementation is set to begin in 2027–2028.
- Start with the Stone AgeThe Stone Age unit sets the scene: how people lived before cities and writing. It gives students a reference point for every civilization that follows in the strand.
- Spend a block on EgyptTeach Ancient Egypt, Hieroglyphs and Mummies & Tomb Art as one block. Students move from the Nile and pharaohs to writing and burial customs, with a source or project activity in each unit.
- Compare Greece, Rome and ChinaTeach the Greeks, Romans and Ancient China units side by side. A simple class chart comparing daily life, inventions and beliefs ties the three together.
- Leave room for OhioSchedule your own lessons on American Indians in the Ohio Country and statehood in 1803. The bundle has no Ohio content, so this half of Grade 4 comes from you.
What to buy
Ancient world only, or all elementary history
For the ancient world strand, the Ancient Civilizations Bundle at $99.99 is the focused choice; its eight units cost $199.92 separately. The Elementary History Curriculum ($169.99, parts $499.80) has all 20 elementary history units, these eight plus then-and-now, medieval and early American topics, and fits a teacher or homeschool family who wants history across several grades from one source. The Early American History Bundle ($99.99) covers Native Americans, explorers, Pilgrims and pioneers instead. For an older or advanced group, the Grades 5–6 units Life Along the Nile in Ancient Egypt and The Stone Age: Traces of Life cost $24.99 each.
Honest limits
Where this bundle stops
The units are general ancient history for young learners. They are not written for Ohio, carry no Ohio standards codes and are not aligned with Ohio's Learning Standards for Social Studies in either the 2018 or the 2026 version, so check them yourself. There is no Ohio history, no unit on American Indians in the Ohio Country and no Mesopotamia or India unit. A grade-level team should send Teach Lessons a short message before sharing. If the bundle does not fit, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value, not cash.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Is it aligned with Ohio's Learning Standards for Social Studies?
No. It is not aligned with, approved under or written for Ohio's Learning Standards for Social Studies, in the 2018 version or the K–8 update adopted in July 2026. The ancient world topics overlap with the early civilizations content the new Grade 4 standards add, but compare the units with the standards and your district's map yourself.
When do Ohio schools switch to the 2026 standards?
District implementation of the updated K–8 social studies standards is set to begin in 2027–2028. Until then, the 2018 grade themes, such as Ohio in the United States for Grade 4, remain the reference. Ask your district how it plans the transition and whether it expects teachers to pilot new content early.
Can Grade 1 students handle ancient civilizations?
At their level, yes. Every sub-unit has a reading passage with a word bank, a differentiated worksheet and slides you present to the group, so Grade 1 children can listen, look and answer short questions. Pyramids, mummies and Viking ships are concrete topics that young children can picture easily.
Does it cover the Grade 5 Western Hemisphere civilizations?
No. The bundle's civilizations are the Stone Age, Egypt, Greece, Rome, China and the Vikings. The 2026 Grade 5 standards turn to early civilizations of the Western Hemisphere, which this bundle does not include, so a Grade 5 teacher would need other material for that strand.
Is it a good choice for an Ohio homeschool?
It can be one part of your history teaching. Ohio's home education option lists history and social studies among the required subjects, and the yearly notice includes an assurance of instruction in them. The lesson plans and slides work for a parent teaching one or several children. Check current law with the state or a homeschool legal resource.
How quickly can I start?
Right after checkout. The eight units arrive as a digital download, with a link by email and a copy under Orders in your customer account. Print the worksheets or show the slides on a screen. If they turn out not to fit your class, you have 7 days to exchange them for store credit.
