Why Physics Cover Work Falls Apart

Most physics tasks that look independent quietly assume a board explanation happened first. Hand a class six motion graphs with no worked example and half of them will read a steep line as a hill, since nothing on the sheet tells them otherwise and the adult in the room cannot correct it. The second failure is pacing. A worksheet sized for the middle of the class leaves the quick students idle by twenty past, and idle is where cover lessons go wrong. Third, nobody marks the work, so students learn quickly that cover work is not real work and behave accordingly. Cover material has to carry its own worked example on the page, include extension that does not look optional, and produce something the regular teacher can grade in five minutes.

A sequence that works

Any one of these stands alone for a single day's absence. Left in sequence they form a coherent short block for a longer one, and each opens with a worked example printed on the sheet.

Where it goes wrong

Making Cover Work Actually Count

Two things go wrong. The first is copying, which is best handled by keeping the answer file separate and sending it to the cover teacher rather than leaving it on the desk. The second is the misconception the cover teacher cannot fix, and in this set that is nearly always the distance-time graph read as a picture of the route, with a steep line taken for a hill. Can someone with no science background run these?

Yes, within limits worth stating. Each lesson has an instruction page covering timings, what to hand out when, and what to collect, so a cover teacher can run the period without knowing any physics. What they cannot do is answer a student who is genuinely stuck on a concept, which is why the tasks are structured and the worked example sits at the top. Expect a few unanswered questions to reach you afterward.

How long does each lesson actually last?

Each is built for a fifty to sixty minute period with a settled class. A slower group will not finish the lens construction lesson, which is fine, since the last two object distances are marked as extension. A quick group will need the extension task, and it is written to take real thinking rather than more of the same. Photocopy the extension for everyone rather than handing it out selectively.

Is this just the main units reformatted?

It draws on the same physics topics, but the format matters more than the content here. Cover sheets carry their own worked example, use shorter reading passages, avoid anything needing equipment, and end in something markable. If you already own the full motion, radiation and optics units, you have the physics; what these add is the version that survives being handed to somebody else.
