Quick answer

The Personal Finance Starter Bundle ($59.99) gives a South Dakota high school teacher the opening weeks of a personal finance course: a Day 1 lesson with slides, workbook and notes, the Wheel of Life lesson on money values, SMART Financial Goals, a Money Mindset Quiz, Handling Money and Debt Prevention, and Percentages and Interest. It does not cover a full semester and is not aligned to or approved under any South Dakota requirement.

The real problem

What a South Dakota finance teacher has to work out first

South Dakota's current graduation requirements were passed on July 16, 2018, under Administrative Rule 24:43:11, with optional endorsements that students can earn on top of the base requirements. Older Department of Education documents list a requirement for Personal Finance or Economics, but the current credit amount and how your school handles it are things we could not confirm, so the first step is a conversation with your counselor or district office. Ask whether personal finance is a standalone course in your building, an option next to economics, or part of another class. The answer changes what you need. A standalone semester needs a full sequence. A unit inside economics or a CTE class needs a few strong lessons that get students thinking about their own money quickly. South Dakota's Department of Education also runs a Career and Technical Education division, offers an Advanced Career Endorsement and keeps a list of State-Approved Industry-Recognized Credentials, so some finance teaching happens inside career-focused programs too. Whatever the setup, the first weeks are the hardest to plan. Students arrive with very different ideas about money, and a lecture on interest rates on day one loses most of them. Lessons that start with values and goals, then move to debt and interest, keep them listening.

Why it fits

How the six lessons fit South Dakota classrooms

The bundle covers the opening of a finance course and works inside economics or career classes too.

  • The Day 1 lesson gives you slides, a workbook and notes to launch a new finance course.
  • Wheel of Life connects money to students' own values before any numbers appear on the board.
  • SMART Financial Goals turns vague wishes like a first car into a plan with steps.
  • The Money Mindset Quiz sorts students as savers, spenders, avoiders or investors for an easy discussion.
  • Handling Money and Debt Prevention suits economics or CTE classes that only have room for one finance unit.
  • Percentages and Interest gives the math behind loans and savings, useful before any credit lesson.

Getting started

A sample opening to the course

This order is a suggestion. Your school's course setup decides how much time each part gets.

  1. Ask how your school handles the courseCheck with your counselor or district whether personal finance is standalone, paired with economics or embedded in another class, and how it fits Administrative Rule 24:43:11 in your building.
  2. Launch with the Day 1 lessonUse the course overview lesson on the first day so students see what the class covers. The workbook gives them a place to keep notes from the start.
  3. Spend a week on values and goalsTeach the Wheel of Life lesson, the Money Mindset Quiz and SMART Financial Goals together. Students talk about their own money before any calculation. Keep the quiz results for a later lesson.
  4. Move into debt and interestTeach Handling Money and Debt Prevention next, then Percentages and Interest, so the math answers questions students already raised about loans and saving. Use the answer keys for quick checks.
  5. Plan the rest of the courseAfter the starter set, add your own units or another bundle on topics such as income, taxes, banking or investing, depending on what your school expects the course to include.

What to buy

Choosing between the finance and business bundles

Start with the Personal Finance Starter Bundle if you need the opening of a finance class: $59.99 for six resources that cost $78.94 separately. Teachers in career readiness or CTE courses may get more from the Career Readiness Curriculum Bundle ($99.99, parts $199.92), which pairs a money and debt unit with résumés, interviews, professional email and teamwork. If your students need more practice with the numbers, the Everyday & Financial Math Bundle ($49.99, parts $69.97) covers discounts, tax, simple interest and business math. Business and economics teachers in Grades 10–12 can look at the Accounting & Economics Fundamentals Bundle ($109.99, nine units).

Honest limits

Limits worth knowing

This bundle is not written for South Dakota. It has no South Dakota content, no state standards codes and no link to any graduation rule or endorsement, and the Department of Education has not reviewed or approved it. Six resources are a starter set, not a full semester. Confirm with your district whether and how personal finance is required for your students before planning. You supply printing and any extra units. If your department wants to share the files, send Teach Lessons a short message first. If it is not a fit, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value, not cash.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Does this bundle meet South Dakota's personal finance requirement?

We cannot say that, and the bundle is not aligned to or approved under any South Dakota rule. Older Department of Education documents list a Personal Finance or Economics requirement, and current graduation requirements sit under Administrative Rule 24:43:11. Ask your counselor or district how the requirement works in your school and whether this material fits the course.

Is it enough for a semester course?

No. The six resources cover the opening of a course: a launch lesson, values, goals, mindset, money handling and debt, and percentages and interest. A semester course will need more units, which you add from your own materials or other resources. Many teachers use it as the first three or four weeks of their plan, though the pacing is up to you.

Can I use it in an economics or CTE class?

Yes, that often works well. Handling Money and Debt Prevention and Percentages and Interest stand on their own, and the goals and values lessons fit an advisory or career class. Check with your program lead how finance content fits your CTE program or endorsement plans.

What exactly arrives after purchase?

A digital download with slides, workbooks, notes, worksheets and answer keys for print and digital classrooms. The link comes by email right after checkout and is also saved in your customer account under Orders. You can print the workbook pages as a packet for each student, or show the slides and keep the workbook digital, whichever fits your room better.

Can other teachers in my school use it?

The licence covers your own teaching. If colleagues or a whole department want the files, message Teach Lessons before buying so team use is cleared. Posting the files publicly or sharing them outside your school is not allowed. A quick note with your school name and the number of teachers is enough for Teach Lessons to answer.

What if it is not the right fit?

Compare the six titles with your course outline before buying. If you buy and it still does not fit, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value. It is store credit, not a cash refund. The credit can go toward the Career Readiness or Everyday & Financial Math bundle if one of those suits your course better.
