The real problem
Third grade at home under South Dakota's rules
South Dakota families homeschool under alternative instruction, SDCL 13-27-3. You notify the Department of Education within 30 days of starting. Since SB 177 took effect on July 1, 2021, families use the department's notice forms and file once, filing again only if the child enrolls in a school or the family moves to another district, and the department may not ask for information the law does not require. State law no longer requires standardized testing for homeschool students, and no results are sent in. Instruction must be given so as to lead to a mastery of the English language, one instructor may teach no more than 22 children, and no high school diploma or teaching certificate is needed. We could not confirm the current statutory subject list or record-keeping rules, so check those with the state or a homeschool legal resource; this is a summary, not legal advice. With so few outside checkpoints, the real question is your own: how do you know your third grader is on track? Third grade is when reading shifts from decoding to understanding, writing grows from sentences to short stories, and math moves into place value up to 1000. Without a test date, short daily practice and your own notes become your way of seeing progress.
Why it fits
How the bundle fits a South Dakota home school
These are the pieces most families lean on, and why they suit a home setting.
- Grammar, creative writing and phonics packs give daily English work that supports mastery of the language.
- The Grade 3 reading story, Mia and the Moonlight Garden, adds comprehension questions to check understanding.
- Numbers to 1000 teaches place value, comparing, ordering and number lines as a complete unit.
- Short math warm-ups show you quickly which facts your child still needs to practice.
- Math Made Easy is written for parents, with a guide and a workbook for teaching at home.
- Siblings can share the vocabulary trainer, since the rules allow one instructor for several children.
Getting started
A simple weekly rhythm for third grade
Use this as a starting point and adjust it to your child's pace and your family's days.
- File your notice, then planSend the Department of Education notice within 30 days of starting. Then decide which days are for literacy, which for math, and where science and history will come from.
- Open each day with a warm-upStart with one Grade 3 math warm-up worksheet. It settles the morning and gives you a quick look at which facts your child knows by heart.
- Rotate the English packsAlternate grammar, phonics and creative writing across the week so each skill comes up two or three times. Keep finished pages in a folder as your own record.
- Teach Numbers to 1000 as a blockWork through the Numbers to 1000 unit over several weeks, using the practice packs and the Math Made Easy guide when a concept needs a second explanation.
- Check progress with the storyUse the reading comprehension story and its questions as a check-in once the routine is settled. Without a state test, these moments show you how reading is growing.
What to buy
Which third grade set to buy
For most South Dakota homeschool families, the 3rd Grade Practice Bundle is the best value: $59.99 for ten resources that cost $95.90 separately. If you only need English, the Grade 3 ELA Pack ($13.99, parts $19.95) has the grammar, creative writing, phonics, reading story and vocabulary trainer. Families who want more complete math units can add the Elementary Math Units Bundle ($69.99, parts $99.96), with fractions, area and perimeter, and a test prep toolkit next to Numbers to 1000. The Grades 3–5 Test Prep Bundle ($64.99) is built for spring state tests, which South Dakota homeschoolers do not have to take, so most families can skip it.
Honest limits
What the bundle will not do
This bundle is not written for South Dakota and has no state-specific content, no state standards codes and no approval from the Department of Education. It is practice packs plus the units named, not a full year, and it has no science, social studies or South Dakota history. Check current homeschool law with the state or a homeschool legal resource, especially the subject and record rules we could not confirm. Printing and supplies are yours. If a co-op wants to use your copy, message Teach Lessons first. If it is not a fit, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value, not cash.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Does this meet South Dakota's homeschool requirements?
We cannot say that, and the bundle is not aligned to South Dakota's standards or approved by the state. South Dakota law requires instruction that leads to a mastery of the English language, and the current subject list and record rules were not something we could confirm. Check the law with the Department of Education or a homeschool legal resource and decide how this bundle fits your plan.
Do South Dakota homeschoolers have to test in third grade?
No. As of 2026, South Dakota law no longer requires standardized testing for homeschool students, and results are not submitted. Many families still check progress in their own way. The reading story questions and math warm-ups in this bundle can help with that, but they are not a standardized test.
Is this a full third grade curriculum?
No. It covers literacy practice and a math strand, with the Numbers to 1000 unit and practice packs. It does not include science, history or social studies. Most families add separate materials for those subjects and use this bundle for the daily reading, writing and math work.
Can I teach two children with it?
Inside your own family, yes; the licence covers your own teaching. South Dakota allows one instructor to teach up to 22 children, but if you teach other families' children in a co-op, send Teach Lessons a short message first so that use is cleared. Siblings in other grades would need their own grade-level materials.
Does my child need a tablet or computer?
No device is required. Everything downloads right after purchase, and the worksheets, activities and answer keys can be printed. Slides can be shown on any screen you already have, but many families teaching at home work from paper only. Keep a printed set in a binder for each child.
What if it is not right for our family?
Look at the parts list on the product page first. If you buy and the bundle is not a fit, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value. It is store credit, not a cash refund. Many families use the credit on the Grade 3 ELA Pack or a math bundle that suits them better.
