The teaching problem
The Topic Dates Faster Than Your Binder
Any material naming this year's model or this year's product is stale by the second time you teach it, which is why the unit is built on a method instead. Decompose an occupation into tasks, ask which of those tasks a machine can do reliably, and the analysis survives the next release. The classroom difficulty is that students split into two camps on arrival. One expects mass unemployment; the other has decided the tools are toys because one gave a wrong answer once. Both positions skip the part that matters, which is that a technology handling some of a role's tasks changes what the role is, what it pays and who is accountable when it fails. Evidence students can inspect is what settles this, so transcripts come printed rather than generated live.
A sequence that works
Automation, Evidence and the Jobs Ahead
The sequence starts with one occupation broken into tasks and ends with a workplace policy students write themselves. Every claim in between has to be supported from something in front of them.
- Break a job into tasksGroups take an occupation they know and list twenty tasks it involves, then rate each for repetition, judgment and physical presence. Those ratings drive every later lesson.
- What automation already changedBank tellers, checkout staff, typesetters and travel agents show four different outcomes, from disappearance to redefinition. Students find the pattern in which tasks left and which arrived instead.
- Reading a tool's output criticallyPrinted transcripts show confident wrong answers, invented sources and a biased shortlist. Students mark each failure, name what a human would have to check, and estimate the cost of missing it.
- Who is accountableA rejected loan and a mis-scheduled shift trace back to an automated decision. Students identify who made the choice, what recourse the affected person has, and where disclosure should have happened.
- Writing the workplace policyGroups draft five rules for using automated tools in a named workplace, covering disclosure, checking, and data that must never be entered. Policies are swapped and stress-tested.
Where it goes wrong
Claims Students Make Without Evidence
The favorite is a job loss figure quoted with total confidence and no source, usually picked up from a video. Treat any number as a claim needing provenance, and ask which study, which country, which year. Next is the assumption that work is a fixed quantity, so every automated task must mean a lost job; the historical cases in lesson two exist to complicate that. Watch also for tool output treated as sourced fact, and for the phrase about the system deciding, used to end a discussion about responsibility. A good answer names the specific task, the failure mode it is prone to, the check that catches it, and the person who remains accountable.

Do students need access to AI tools for this?
No, and the unit is designed on that assumption. The critical reading lesson uses printed transcripts chosen to show specific failure modes, which is more reliable than hoping a live tool produces a useful error during your lesson. If your school does allow student access, teacher notes suggest where to swap in a live task and what to watch for, including the data students should never enter.
How long before the content goes out of date?
The task decomposition method, the historical cases and the accountability framework hold regardless of what launches next. The transcripts will eventually look dated in style, though the failure modes they illustrate have been stable, and everything is editable so you can paste in a fresher example. Specific products are deliberately kept out of the assessed material for that reason.
Is it balanced, or does it push one view?
The materials do not argue for a conclusion about employment. Lesson two supplies four historical cases with genuinely different outcomes, and the debate motions are written to be arguable from either side using the evidence provided. What the unit does insist on is evidence: students are marked on whether claims are supported, not on which position they take.
