The teaching problem
Orthographic Thinking Is Genuinely Difficult
Architecture asks students to hold three flat drawings in their head as one solid object, and nothing in the rest of the art course prepares them for it. The plan is a cut, the elevation is a flat face with no depth cues, and the section is a second cut turned vertical. Students routinely draw all three as small perspective sketches, which look fine and communicate nothing. Scale adds arithmetic to a lesson many of them chose to avoid arithmetic in. Then there is the room problem: model building needs cutting mats, steel rules and about twice the time you first estimate, and half-built card models have to go somewhere between lessons. Plan the storage before you plan the brief, and give the drawing stage more lessons than feels comfortable.
A sequence that works
From Cut Plane to Card Model
Five lessons that start with the idea of the cut, build accuracy at a fixed scale, and finish with a model that matches the drawings. Students measure a real room early so the numbers mean something.
- Cutting the Building in HalfA foam block sliced horizontally and vertically shows what a plan and a section really are. Students then match photographs of small houses to the correct plan from four options.
- Measuring and Drawing at 1:50Tape measures out, students record their own classroom or bedroom in centimeters, convert at 1:50 and draw on grid paper with correct wall thickness and door swings.
- Plan, Elevation, Section TogetherOne small dwelling drawn three ways, with a rule that any wall length appearing in two drawings must agree. Students check a partner's set for contradictions before anything is inked.
- A Brief and a Bubble DiagramGiven a site and a client, students sort required spaces into a bubble diagram, decide circulation and entry, then convert the diagram into a plan that obeys the constraints.
- Building and Photographing the ModelThe final plan is scaled onto card, walls cut and folded up, a scale figure added. Models are photographed at eye level so the height reads honestly.
Where it goes wrong
Scale Slips and Missing Conventions
The commonest failure is a drawing labeled 1:50 that was actually sized to fit the paper. Insist on one conversion table taped to the desk: at 1:50, two centimeters on paper equals one meter of building. Walls drawn as single lines are the next problem, since thickness disappears and the model then has no material to fold. Windows confuse students because the plan cuts above the sill, so a window reads as a gap in the wall with a thin line across it, not as a little picture of a window. Watch for furniture drawn at a different scale from the walls, missing door swing arcs, and models built with no scale figure, which makes a garage look like a cathedral.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a technical drawing background to teach this?
No. Everything runs on grid paper, a ruler and a short list of conventions, all of which are explained in the slides with worked examples. The arithmetic goes no further than dividing by 50 or 100, and answer keys are provided for every conversion sheet. If a student asks about roof pitch or diagonal bracing, that is a Pythagoras question and there is a separate resource on this site for it.
What tools does the model stage really need?
A steel rule, a cutting mat and a craft knife per pair give the cleanest results, with PVA or a glue gun for assembly. If knives are not permitted, cereal box card and sharp scissors work, though corners will be softer. Budget two lessons for building rather than one. The templates print on standard letter or A4 paper, so no large format printer is needed.
Will grade 7 students manage the scale work?
Most will, if they measure a real room first and convert numbers they gathered themselves. Abstract conversion drills tend to stall younger classes. For a mixed group, some teachers keep everyone at 1:100 for the first drawing, since dividing by 100 is easier to see, and move to 1:50 for the final plan. The worksheets are editable, so changing the scale takes a moment.
