The teaching problem
Why Student Shading Comes Out Flat
Almost every beginner draws the same way: outline the object, then fill the shaded half evenly with gray. The result reads as a flat shape wearing a gray patch, because two things are missing. Nothing in the drawing commits to a direction for the light, and the tonal range is compressed into the middle, since students press hard early and have nowhere left to go for the darks. There is also a perceptual problem specific to this topic. The darkest part of a rounded object is not the edge furthest from the lamp but a band just inside it, with light bouncing back from the table beyond that. Students draw what they believe rather than what is there, so the core shadow gets missed and the form stays flat. Teaching has to slow the looking down.
A sequence that works
One Lamp, One Object, Five Lessons
The sequence moves from mark-making control to observed form and finally to a composed still life. A single clip lamp in a room with the blinds down is enough equipment for all of it.
- Building a Five-Step Value ScaleStudents make a strip running from paper white to the darkest graphite they can lay down, using hatching only. This sets the range every later drawing has to fill.
- The Sphere Under One LightA single ball lit from one side. Students find and label five things: highlight, midtone, core shadow, reflected light, cast shadow, then draw them in that order.
- Cylinders, Cones and Edge QualityRounded and angled forms compared. Where a plane turns sharply the tonal edge is hard; where it curves, the edge is soft, and the pencil has to show the difference.
- Folds in Crumpled PaperDrawing a sheet of crumpled paper forces students to apply the same logic to irregular form, with many small planes and cast shadows falling across each other.
- Still Life With Directional LightThree objects, one lamp low and to the side. Students plan with a thumbnail, block in the shadow shapes first, and hold the lightest lights until the end.
Where it goes wrong
Six Shading Errors Worth Catching Early
Watch for the finger smudge, which flattens everything into an even gray and destroys the paper surface; a paper stump or tighter hatching gives more control. Cast shadows are the next problem: students draw them straight down or as a dark outline with a pale center, when they should be darkest where the object meets the surface and should stretch away from the lamp. Reflected light gets overplayed until the shadow side glows brighter than the lit side. And many students never reach true black, so a quick check helps: hold the drawing next to the value strip and ask which steps are actually present. Grade the tonal range and the observation separately from neatness.

Frequently asked questions
What materials does a class of thirty actually need?
A 2B and a 4B pencil each, a kneaded or plastic eraser, and reasonable cartridge paper. Blending stumps help but are optional, and the unit deliberately teaches hatching first so students are not dependent on them. For the still life you need one clip lamp per group of four and objects with simple geometry, such as fruit, mugs and boxes.
Can I teach this if my own drawing is shaky?
Yes. The teaching here is mostly about directing attention, and the slides carry the visual demonstrations so you are not drawing on the board under pressure. What matters is asking the right question at the right desk, and the lesson notes give the specific ones: where is your light coming from, which is darker, this edge or that one, where does the cast shadow start.
My room has fixed fluorescent lighting. Is that a problem?
It flattens everything, so a single directional lamp matters more than any other equipment in this unit. If you cannot dim the room, work near a window with the class facing away from it, or build a simple cardboard box stage with one opening for each group. Lesson two includes a fallback setup for rooms where lighting cannot be controlled at all.
