The teaching problem
Pattern Looks Simple Until It Has to Repeat
Drawing a motif is easy and most students enjoy it. Making that motif repeat across a surface is a construction problem, and it defeats classes that were doing fine ten minutes earlier. The reason is the tile edge. Students instinctively draw a complete, self-contained motif inside a square, so when the squares are placed side by side the design floats in a grid of white channels with a visible seam at every join. Nothing continues across the boundary, because nothing was ever drawn across it. There is a second difficulty in the language. Students confidently call a rotated motif a mirrored one, and until they can tell those apart they cannot describe or fix what they have made. Both problems are solvable, but only if the lesson treats construction as the skill and decoration as the reward.
A sequence that works
From Four Symmetries to a Designed Object
The unit builds a technical vocabulary, then uses it to construct patterns that actually tile. The last lesson puts the pattern on something, because ornament is designed for a surface rather than for a worksheet.
- Four Ways to Repeat a ShapeOn grid paper, students take one small motif through translation, reflection, rotation and glide reflection, labeling each. Comparing the four side by side settles the vocabulary quickly.
- Rosettes With Compass and RulerSix and eight-fold rotational designs constructed from a circle. Accuracy pays off visibly here, and students who dislike freehand drawing often produce their best work in this lesson.
- The Cut and Swap TileA drawn square is cut into quarters, the quarters are swapped diagonally and taped, and students fill the new center. The design now runs across every edge.
- Half-Drop and Brick OffsetsThe same tile repeated on offset grids rather than a straight one. Students compare the two layouts and describe how the offset breaks up unwanted vertical lines.
- Ornament for a Real SurfaceA design brief: a border for a book cover, a repeat for fabric, a tile for a wall. Scale and placement now become deliberate decisions rather than defaults.
Where it goes wrong
Repeat Errors and How to Diagnose Them
When a repeat fails, three checks usually locate it. Hold four copies of the tile together; if white channels appear, the motif stops short of the edges and the cut and swap lesson needs repeating. If a line jumps at a join, the two matching edges were drawn at different times rather than as continuations of each other. If the pattern reads as busy noise, the student has filled the ground completely and left no rest, which is worth discussing as a design decision rather than an error. For assessment, grade the construction and the finish separately. A precisely built tile with slightly wobbly inking shows more understanding than a beautiful motif that does not repeat.

Frequently asked questions
Is this an art unit or a geometry unit?
It is an art unit that borrows accurate language from geometry. Students construct, cut and design throughout, and the outcome is visual work rather than proofs. That said, the symmetry vocabulary is used properly, so if your math department covers transformations in the same year the two reinforce each other. Some teachers time the unit to follow that math topic for exactly this reason.
What equipment do students need for the rosette work?
A compass, a ruler and a sharp pencil each. Compasses with a loose hinge cause more frustration than any other tool in this unit, so check them before the lesson and keep spares. If you have no class set, the rosette lesson can be run with circle templates and a protractor instead, and there is an alternative worksheet for that setup in the pack.
How does the unit handle ornament from other cultures?
By treating it as designed work with reasons behind it, not as decoration to copy. The slides show construction logic in Islamic geometric ornament and in printed textile repeats, and students are asked what the pattern was made for and where it sat. Nothing in the tasks asks students to imitate a sacred design, and the teacher notes suggest how to frame the discussion.
