The teaching problem
Optical Mixing Is Easy to Fake
Students can produce a dotted picture in one lesson and learn nothing, because they dot with colors already mixed on the palette. The effect Seurat was after depends on placing unmixed hues side by side and letting distance do the work, and it only appears within a narrow range of dot size and viewing distance. Get either wrong and the surface either turns to mud or stays a pattern of visible spots. That sensitivity is a gift for teaching, since it makes the theory falsifiable in front of the class. The historical side needs equal care. Seurat is grouped with the Impressionists and worked in the opposite spirit: studies, drawings and calculation, with figures held still and composed on strong horizontals rather than caught in passing.
A sequence that works
From Color Science to Composed Canvas
Five lessons that run the color experiments before any dotting begins, then apply what they show to a small divisionist study built on a planned composition rather than a copied photograph.

Where it goes wrong
Why Student Pointillism Turns to Mud
Three technical faults account for nearly every failure. Students dot with colors mixed beforehand, which removes the effect entirely, so restrict the palette to unmixed hues plus white. They make dots far too large for the size of the paper, so the picture never resolves at any sensible distance; set the dot scale against a stated viewing distance and test it early. They also work wet into wet, letting adjacent dots blend physically into gray. Conceptually, correct the claim that the colors mix in the way paint does. What happens at distance is a partial fusion that keeps a vibration mixed pigment does not have, which is why the surface looks lit. Assess the color reasoning and the composition plan, not the neatness of the dots.

What paint and paper work best for the studio task?
Gouache or acrylic on smooth heavy paper gives the cleanest dots, since watercolor spreads and rough paper breaks the mark. Keep the format small, around postcard size, so a study can be finished in two sessions. Use a limited set of unmixed hues plus white and hand out fine round brushes rather than cotton buds, which make dots too large and too soft for the effect to appear.
How much color theory do students need first?
Enough to name complementary pairs and to distinguish mixing pigment from mixing light. The experiment sheets build both from scratch, so a class with no prior theory can start here. Is this useful for teaching digital images too?
The comparison with screen pixels is tempting and worth making carefully. A screen adds light and a painted dot does not, so the analogy holds for resolution and viewing distance but breaks down for the color mixing itself. Asking students to say exactly where the comparison fails makes a strong extension task, particularly for classes who have done any digital image work.
