Why Sustainability Units Turn Into Slogans
Most sustainability lessons ask students what they think before they know anything, and the answers come back as slogans that cannot be marked. The subject knowledge that would fix it is scattered. Efficiency and waste heat sit in physics, external costs and reporting standards sit in business, and the skill of weighing two sourced positions sits in English. No single department owns enough of it to build a serious case, so the topic gets handed to whoever has a spare week. There is also a credibility problem. Students have heard corporate environmental claims since primary school and have no tools to test one, which is why a lesson that hands them a real CSR report and a calculator changes the register of the whole discussion.
A sequence that works
From Waste Heat to Written Case
The sequence deliberately starts with a physical quantity and ends with an argument. Students who have already computed an efficiency figure write very differently about a company's environmental claims than students who begin with opinion.
- Following the energy lossesStudents calculate the useful output and the waste heat for a kettle, a bulb and a small engine, then rank the three and defend the ranking with their figures.
- Who pays for the damageAn external cost is introduced through a concrete case: a firm saves money, someone downstream does not. Students identify who bears each cost and how a regulator could shift it.
- Reading a real CSR reportThe class marks up an actual sustainability page for claims that carry a number, claims that carry a date, and claims that carry neither. That third pile is the lesson.
- Global supply chains, local effectsOne product is traced from raw material to shelf using the globalization unit, with students naming a benefit and a cost at each step rather than at the end.
- Making the case in writingStudents draft a position on one decision, quoting their own efficiency figure and a sourced counterargument. Land art or a soundscape task documents the local site the case refers to.
Where it goes wrong
Marking Opinion Work Without Marking Opinions
Grade the reasoning and the sourcing, never the position, and publish that in the rubric so students stop guessing which side earns marks. The technical errors are worth naming too. Efficiency above one hundred percent is the giveaway that useful output and total input have been swapped. Kilowatts and kilowatt hours get used interchangeably, which turns a power rating into a bill. Renewable, carbon neutral and sustainable are treated as synonyms, though a firm can meet the second by buying offsets while changing nothing. Ask for one figure with a unit and one named source in every claim, and the slogans thin out quickly.

Do students need physics for the energy lesson?
They need to be able to divide one number by another and keep track of units. Disagreement is still welcome; unsupported assertion simply does not score.
