Why Minnesota teachers use these
Two statewide efforts land on Minnesota teachers at once. The READ Act, effective from 2024–25, requires evidence-based literacy instruction across the state, which has meant retraining, screening windows and a reading block that grows at the expense of what sits around it. Separately, the ethnic-studies requirement asks departments to integrate new content into courses that were already full. Testing runs through both: the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments cover reading and mathematics in grades 3 through 8, mathematics again at grade 10 or 11, and science at grades 5, 8 and once in high school, with the MCA-IV reading generation rolling out in 2025–26. Under that load, material a teacher means to build gets postponed until the night before it is needed. Buying a unit does not fix the calendar, but it lifts one whole job off it. The four tiers, the deck, the plan and the keys are finished, so a preparation period lost to paperwork no longer costs you the lesson.

How the five lessons fit together
One download is planned as a sequence, not a single handout, which means you can set the whole arc out on a Sunday and then teach from it for two weeks.
- Set the question before the methodOpen with the scenario the unit is built around. Students argue about what the data might show before anyone touches a formula, which gives the rest of the week something to answer.
- Model it once on the boardThe deck carries a worked example with the reasoning spelled out. You talk it through once, then hand the same example back to students with two lines missing.
- Split the room by tierFour versions of the practice go out at the same moment. Students who need the steps written down get them; students ready for the extension never see the scaffolding at all.
- Check with the key, then re-teachComplete keys mean marking can happen inside the lesson. Whatever the class got wrong in the same place becomes the next ten minutes of teaching rather than a note for later.
- Finish with a piece of writingEach unit ends in something a student explains in sentences. That page goes in the folder, and it is what you reach for when a support plan review asks for evidence.

Make it work in your building
For split rooms and support plans
Since the READ Act, reading is everyone's job in Minnesota, including in the courses that are not reading. That changes what a worksheet has to do. A page dense with unbroken text will lose students who can handle the mathematics but not the paragraph, and the blank sheet that comes back tells you nothing about what they know. The four tiers separate those two things: the reading load drops as you go down the levels while the actual demand of the task stays put, so a student's written answer reflects the skill you were teaching. What you collect is comparable across the room, dated and specific — the kind of evidence a conference or a support plan review can use.

Will these help with MCA preparation?
The Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments cover reading and mathematics in grades 3 through 8, mathematics again at grade 10 or 11, and science at grades 5, 8 and once in high school, with the MCA-IV reading generation rolling out in 2025–26. These units are not practice tests, they hold no MCA items, and we claim nothing about scores. They build the underlying habits — reading a multi-step prompt, using the vocabulary, writing an explanation — inside ordinary lessons.
How much am I allowed to print?
Print what your own students need. There is no page limit and no per-copy charge: the worksheets exist to be photocopied, and most teachers run only the two tiers a given section actually uses rather than all four. The file stays on your drive afterward, so next year's classes cost nothing further. Where the copy budget is tight, project the slide deck and put only the practice pages on paper.
Can another teacher in my building use my copy?
One purchase covers one teacher and every section that teacher takes, this year and in later years. A colleague running their own classes needs their own copy. If several of you want the same material, a bundle usually costs less per teacher than separate units, and it lets a department raise a single purchase order instead of pushing a series of small ones through the office.
What files do I get, and will they work with our LMS?
Each unit downloads as editable Word and PowerPoint files plus print-ready PDFs. Upload the PDFs to Google Classroom, Schoology, Canvas or whichever platform your district runs; open the Word files when you want to cut a question, change a name or drop in your school header. Nothing needs a subscription or a separate app, and once the files are on your machine they work with no internet connection.
We have to fold ethnic-studies content into existing courses. Where do these fit?
They are subject units, not an ethnic-studies program, and we would not pretend otherwise. What they can do is free the time that integration work takes. When the routine parts of a course — the practice, the deck, the keys — arrive finished, the planning hours left over go to the sections you are actually rewriting. Several units also work from real-world data and case material, which is easier to connect to that content than a page of abstract exercises.
