Why New Hampshire teachers use these
New Hampshire asks more design work of its teachers than most states do. Districts report against competencies rather than a chapter list, and Performance Assessment for Competency Education — PACE — runs in some districts as an innovation-waiver alternative alongside the state test. That model depends on locally built performance tasks, and somebody has to write them, moderate them and defend them at a curriculum meeting. In a two-person science department, that somebody is you, after school. State testing adds its own shape to the year: NH SAS covers grades 3 through 8, and grade 11 uses the SAT, so a high school teacher's accountability rides on reading and reasoning rather than on a science exam. Finished units help because they supply the parts that take longest to build — a task worth assessing, four versions of it, the keys and a deck already in teaching order. You still decide which competency the work evidences and how it is scored. What disappears is the Sunday spent writing the task first.

How a unit runs across five lessons
The physics units follow the same arc: something puzzling, then the model that explains it, then practice, then a task under pressure, and finally a piece of writing worth recording.
- Open with something that misbehavesLesson one hands students a result that argues with their intuition — a pulley that halves the force, light that produces no current at all — and asks them to account for it.

Make it work in your building
Made for small departments
Competency reporting has a hard edge to it: for each student, on each competency, you need work that shows what they can do. A single undifferentiated handout will not give you that, because the students who most need the record are the ones who write least on it. Tiered versions of the same task change what comes back. A student on the lightest tier still writes an explanation of the photoelectric effect, shorter and more heavily prompted, but recognizably about the same physics as the one on the top tier. Marked side by side, those two pieces support the same conversation at a conference or a competency review, and both belong in the portfolio.

How do these fit NH SAS and the grade 11 SAT?
The New Hampshire Statewide Assessment System runs in grades 3 through 8, and grade 11 uses the SAT. Neither is something a physics unit prepares students for directly, and we make no claim about scores. What these units practice is the underlying work both assessments lean on: reading a dense passage carefully, pulling data out of a graph, and writing an explanation that has a claim and evidence in it rather than a bare answer.
How much planning does a finished unit actually save?
The measurable part is the making. Four differentiated versions of a worksheet, a slide deck, the answer keys and a timing plan is most of a weekend if you build it from nothing, and rather more the first time you teach a topic. What a download does not do is read your class for you. Expect twenty minutes choosing tiers, cutting a task you do not want and adding your own example.
What can I see before I buy?
Every product page carries a preview with sample pages from the worksheets, the lesson plan and part of the slide deck, plus the grade band and the topic list. Read the preview the way you would read a colleague's handout: check the reading level, look at how the hardest problems are worded, and see whether the notation matches what your students already use. If it does not fit your sequence, do not buy it.

Our district is a PACE district. Is this material any use to us?
It can be, as raw material rather than as a finished assessment. PACE work rests on locally built and locally moderated performance tasks, and nothing bought off a website can be that on its own. What these units give you is the teaching that has to happen first, plus written tasks and answer keys you and your colleagues can rework into a common assessment. Because the Word files are editable, rewriting a prompt to match your competency language takes minutes.
