Why South Carolina teachers use these
South Carolina tests more of the curriculum than most states, and science teachers feel it. How one unit runs across a week
The units are built as a sequence of lessons with a written outcome at the end, so a single download covers a week or more and leaves harder material for the students who move fastest.

How do these sit with SCPASS and the End-of-Course Examination Program?
SCPASS assesses science and social studies in grades 4 through 8, and the End-of-Course Examination Program does the same job at high school. These units build what those assessments draw on: subject vocabulary used precisely, data read carefully, and written responses that explain rather than assert. There are no practice tests here, no secure items and no claim about scores — only regular graded science writing across the year.
Is the complete curriculum worth it against buying units one at a time?
Work it out per teaching week rather than per file. Four separate units cover roughly a month; the complete biology curriculum is built to carry a middle school year, sequenced so one topic leads into the next. If you teach the subject repeatedly, or several colleagues need the same content, the curriculum costs less per week of teaching and goes through the office as one purchase order rather than five.
We already have a pacing guide. Can a unit slot into it?
That is how most departments use them. Read the lesson plan, identify which weeks of your pacing guide the concepts belong to, and place the unit there instead of reordering your year around it. The deck and worksheets are Word and PowerPoint, so renaming a section to match your guide's language, dropping a lesson you already cover elsewhere or adding your school's header takes a few minutes.
Will students with reading difficulties be able to use the worksheets?
The pages are set plainly — clear headings, one instruction per line, white space where a student needs to write, and no decoration competing with the task. The four tiers vary reading load as well as difficulty, so a student can meet the same content with less text in front of them. Because the files are editable Word documents, you can enlarge the type or split a dense page into two before printing.
Third grade retention takes our attention. Does that reach middle school science?
It does, indirectly. The Read to Succeed Act means the reading gate shapes elementary priorities, and students who needed that support arrive in your middle school classes still carrying a reading gap into a text-heavy subject. Tiered worksheets are the practical answer: the same investigation, written at a level a student can actually get through, so a reading difficulty stops being the reason they cannot show what they understand about the science.
