Why Wyoming teachers use these
Wyoming schools are small and a long way apart. The state teaches fewer students than one big-city district elsewhere, spends comparatively well per head, and still has to staff a full course list in buildings where one teacher carries three subjects and every grade inside them. Many rural districts run a four-day week, which makes each teaching day longer and every absence more costly. Assessment sits on top of that: WY-TOPP covers grades 3 through 8 and grade 10, and a 2026 vendor transition has changed how the test is administered, so calendars and routines are being rewritten mid-year. None of that leaves an evening free for building materials. A sequence you can run
One unit, five lessons, one long block at a time
Each unit is written as a run of stages with timings attached, so it works whether your school gives you five short periods or four long ones.
- Put the finished example up firstStudents look at the end product and work out what it took to make. The worksheet asks for observations rather than opinions, so a quiet class still has something to write down.
- Teach the technique or the termThe deck covers the method — the tool, the vocabulary, the rule of thumb — in about fifteen minutes, which leaves the rest of a long period for students to try it while you circulate.
- Practice at the level that fitsFour versions of the practice sheet go out. Students who need the steps broken down get them, students ready for the harder brief get that, and both hand in comparable work.
- Make the piece that countsThe main task takes a full block: students produce the drawing, the edit or the argument the unit has been building toward, with the brief and the checklist printed on the sheet.
- Critique it, then write it upStudents explain their choices in writing against the checklist. It takes twenty minutes, leaves you a mark you can defend, and closes the unit even when the week ended a day early.

Make it work in your building
Sized for one-person departments
Small classes are the one advantage Wyoming teachers can count on, and tiered work turns it into evidence. When a section has fourteen students, you see every piece of work that comes in, and the tier a student can handle unaided is a more useful record than a percentage. Keep the September writing task next to the February one and the change is visible: shorter frames, longer answers, fewer prompts needed. That comparison is what a conference or a support-plan review actually asks for, and it holds up better than a single WY-TOPP result taken in a grade you may not even teach.

How do these sit alongside WY-TOPP?
They sit beside it, not inside it. WY-TOPP runs in grades 3 through 8 and grade 10, and the state moved to a new vendor in 2026, which affects administration rather than what students need to be able to do. These units build subject vocabulary, written explanation and the habit of supporting an answer with evidence. There are no practice tests here, no WY-TOPP items, and we make no claim about what any score will do.
I teach four preps. What does buying a unit actually take off my plate?
The parts that eat a whole evening: deciding the order of the lessons, writing four versions of each worksheet, building a deck that carries the content, and working out the answers before thirty students do. What is left for you is reading the unit through, cutting the pages that do not suit your group, and running copies. For a teacher with four preps that is the difference between preparing one lesson well and preparing none.
What is actually in the preview?
Sample worksheet pages from more than one tier, slides out of the deck, the lesson plan and a list of the files in the download. If you teach a combined class, read the lowest tier and the highest tier and ask whether both ends of your room could work from them on the same day. That question answers the grade-band problem faster than the grade label on the listing does.
What happens if I buy a unit and it turns out to be wrong for my class?
Downloads are delivered straight after purchase, which is why refund terms for digital files differ from those for physical goods — see the store's refund policy for what applies, since nothing separate is promised here. The preview is the real safeguard and it is worth five minutes before checkout. If a download link fails or a file will not open on your machine, write to the store and the delivery will be put right.
Our district is on a four-day week. Will a five-lesson unit still work?
It will, because the stages are timed separately rather than tied to particular weekdays. On a four-day calendar most teachers run two stages in one long day — input and tiered practice before lunch, the project after it — and finish a unit in three days rather than five. The plan tells you how many minutes each stage needs, so you can merge or split them without losing the thread of the sequence.
