Quick answer

The Elementary History Curriculum ($169.99) is a good fit for a Utah Grades 1–4 teacher who wants history lessons already planned and is fine adding Utah content separately. You get all 20 elementary history units. Each sub-unit comes with a lesson plan, a differentiated worksheet with reading passage and word bank, a project or source activity, an answer key and slides. It is not written to the Utah Core and contains no Utah units.

The real problem

How the Utah K–6 sequence shapes Grades 1–4

The Utah Core Standards for Social Studies for K–6 were adopted in December 2022, and they move a child outward year by year. First grade widens the view from the classroom and neighborhood to the state and nation, with basic history, geography and economics. Second grade is about continuity and change in the community, in Utah and in the U.S., and it brings in timelines and the idea of government. Third grade turns to the U.S. and Utah Constitutions, civic rights and responsibilities, and how the local community connects to the world. Fourth grade is Utah history, geography and government, from the land itself to the present. So the history work a Grades 1–4 teacher actually has to build is uneven. In Grades 1 and 2 you need lots of short, concrete lessons on how life used to be and how we know: old photos, timelines, objects, simple sources. That is where finding or writing leveled readings, worksheets and slides eats your evenings. In Grade 4 the core is Utah itself, which a national resource cannot supply.

Why it fits

Where the 20 units help a Utah classroom

The then-and-now and source units do most of the work in Utah's early grades.

  • Timelines & Measuring Time gives second graders a planned way into the timeline work the state lists.
  • School Then and Now and Family & Daily Life Then and Now suit continuity-and-change lessons in Grade 2.
  • The historical sources unit shows young students how we know about the past from objects and records.
  • Pioneers & Life on the Frontier offers general frontier background; add Utah settlement material yourself for Grade 4.
  • Every worksheet is differentiated, with a reading passage and word bank for mixed reading levels.
  • Slides and answer keys come with each sub-unit, so a substitute can teach from the plan as written.

Getting started

A suggested way to spread the units over Grades 1–4

This is one possible order, not a pacing guide. Move units to fit your district's calendar and the Utah topics your school already teaches.

  1. Grade 1: then and now close to homeStart with School Then and Now and Family & Daily Life Then and Now. They match the first-grade move from classroom and neighborhood outward and need little background knowledge.
  2. Grade 2: timelines and changeTeach Timelines & Measuring Time early in the year, then Old Trades & Crafts and Inventions That Changed the World as examples of how a community changes over time.
  3. Grade 3: sources and the wider worldUse the historical sources unit and one or two ancient-world units, such as Ancient Egypt or The Ancient Greeks, alongside your own constitution and civics lessons.
  4. Grade 4: background around Utah historyKeep your Utah history materials at the center. Explorers, Native Americans and Pioneers can give general background before or beside the Utah chapters, framed with care.
  5. Any grade: sub days and early finishersUnits such as Vikings, Ancient China or Knights & Castles work as complete short blocks when you are out or a group finishes ahead of the rest.

Honest limits

What the curriculum does not do in Utah

None of these units were written for Utah. There is no Utah history, no unit on the Utah Constitution and no Utah Core standard codes, so check each lesson against the Utah Core Standards for Social Studies yourself and plan your Grade 4 state history from other sources. Printing and Utah maps are yours to supply. The licence covers your own teaching; if a grade-level team wants to share it, send Teach Lessons a short message first. If it is not a fit, exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value, not cash.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is this aligned to the Utah Core Standards for Social Studies?

No. The units were not written for Utah, and they are not aligned to, approved by or endorsed by the Utah State Board of Education. Several topics, such as timelines, change over time and learning from sources, overlap with what the K–6 standards ask for in the early grades, but you should compare each lesson with the standards for your grade before you build it into your year.

Does it include Utah history for fourth grade?

It does not. Grade 4 in Utah is centered on the state's history, geography and government, and none of the 20 units covers Utah. Keep your existing Utah materials for that part of the year and use units such as Pioneers & Life on the Frontier or Native Americans: First Peoples of North America for general background.

How long does one unit take?

The product does not set a fixed number of days. Each unit has an overview and three sub-units, and you might plan a sub-unit as one lesson or several, depending on how much discussion and project time you allow. That lets a unit stretch or shrink to fit your schedule.

Can a whole grade-level team at our school use one copy?

The standard licence is for your own teaching. Use across a team or school is possible, but send Teach Lessons a short message before you buy so the right arrangement can be agreed. Until that is settled, keep the files to yourself and never post them on a public site.

Will it work for students who read below grade level?

Each sub-unit includes a differentiated worksheet with a detailed reading passage and a word bank, and the units are built for mixed-ability groups. Very early readers in first grade will still need you to read passages aloud or work through them as a class, especially in the first months of the school year.

How do I get the files after paying?

Everything is a digital download. The link arrives by email right after purchase, and the files also stay in your customer account under Orders. Print the worksheets or show the slides on a classroom screen. Nothing ships, and no extra software comes with the purchase.
