Homeschooling in Virginia: Grammar, Writing and Phonics for Grades 1–6

Virginia homeschool families looking for literacy material often want one purchase that covers several children. The Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum does that for $49.99: grammar, writing prompts, and phonics or word study for every grade from 1 to 6, plus six reading comprehension stories. It is practice material for your language arts, not a complete reading program, and it does not settle anything under Virginia law.

Quick answer

The Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum ($49.99) bundles 24 grade-level packs: grammar, writing prompts and phonics or word study for each grade from 1 to 6, plus six reading comprehension stories. For a Virginia homeschool it can supply the grammar, writing and word-study practice in your language arts plan. Virginia law does not prescribe a subject list, and buying a curriculum is not proof of anything to your division superintendent.

The real problem

What Virginia asks of you, and where literacy fits

Under Virginia's home instruction statute, Va. Code § 22.1-254.1, a parent qualifies in one of four ways: holding a high school diploma, being a qualified teacher, providing a program of study or curriculum, or giving evidence of the ability to provide an adequate education. You file an annual notice of intent with the division superintendent by August 15, listing the subjects you plan to study. The statute itself names no required subjects, so the list is yours to write. By August 1 of the following year you show evidence of progress, either a nationally normed test composite at or above the fourth stanine (or an equivalent ACT, SAT or PSAT score) or an evaluation accepted by the superintendent, such as a letter from a licensed teacher. Children under 6 on September 30 are exempt, and a separate religious exemption exists under § 22.1-254. That is a short summary, not legal advice; check current law with the state or a homeschool legal resource. For literacy, the practical issue is that a year-end test or evaluation looks at what your child can actually do. Families with a first grader and a fifth grader need different practice at the same kitchen table, and buying six separate programs gets expensive.

Why it fits

How the 24 packs help at home

Each grade has its own grammar, writing and phonics or word-study pack, so siblings work on their own level side by side.

  • Grade 1 grammar covers sentences, nouns, verbs and punctuation, the basics an early reader needs.
  • Phonics moves from phonological awareness in Grades 1–2 to roots, prefixes and patterns in Grade 6.
  • Writing prompts give every grade structured practice, from sentence starters to editing tools in Grade 6.
  • Six reading stories, such as The Lighthouse Mystery, come with comprehension questions you can discuss together.
  • The Grade 4 writing pack adds word banks and support tools for children who freeze at a blank page.
  • Packs are short and focused, which suits a homeschool day with several children and one parent.

Getting started

Fitting the packs into your homeschool year

These are suggestions for families, not requirements. Adjust them to your children and your own plan.

  1. Write literacy into your noticeWhen you list subjects on the notice of intent due by August 15, name reading, writing and grammar in plain words. The packs then become one source among others for that subject.
  2. Place each child by skillStart each child in the pack for their grade, then move up or down after a week. A Grade 4 child who struggles with sounds can use the Grade 3 phonics pack without any stigma.
  3. Rotate three short blocksPlan grammar, phonics and writing as short daily blocks and alternate them through the week. A reading story can replace one block when a child needs a break from drills.
  4. Add real books yourselfThe six comprehension stories are a start, not a reading list. Pair the packs with library books and read-alouds so your children read longer texts every week.
  5. Keep work for August 1Save finished writing prompts and comprehension answers in a folder. If you choose an evaluation instead of a test, a licensed teacher reviewing your child's progress will want to see real work samples.

What to buy

One child or several: what to buy

With children in two or more of Grades 1–6, the Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum at $49.99 is the sensible buy; the 24 packs cost $95.76 separately. With a single child, a grade pack is cheaper and adds a vocabulary trainer or extra story: the Grade 1 ELA Pack costs $12.99 ($17.95 for the parts), the Grade 3 ELA Pack $13.99 ($19.95), and the Grade 5 ELA Pack $13.99 ($19.95). If your child is learning English as a new language, the ESL Newcomer Curriculum Bundle ($79.99, parts $159.91) starts with everyday English, simple tenses and vocabulary for Grades 2–6.

Honest limits

Honest limits before you buy

This bundle is not written for Virginia and contains nothing about Virginia's English Standards of Learning. It is practice material, not a systematic reading program with daily lessons, so you supply real books, read-alouds and your own plan for the year. It does not prove anything to your division superintendent; your notice and your August 1 evidence remain your responsibility, and the rules are worth checking with the state or a homeschool legal resource. The licence covers your own family's use. If the packs are not right for you, you can exchange them within 7 days for store credit of equal value; there is no cash refund.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Does this curriculum meet Virginia's homeschool requirements?

No curriculum can promise that, and this one does not claim to. Virginia's statute names no required subject list, asks for an annual notice by August 15, and asks for evidence of progress by August 1 through a test or an accepted evaluation. The packs are also not aligned to Virginia's 2024 English Standards of Learning. Check your obligations with the state or a homeschool legal resource.

Is it enough for a whole year of language arts?

Probably not on its own. Each grade gets three practice packs and some grades get a reading story, which supports grammar, phonics and writing well. A full year of language arts also needs plenty of real reading, so add library books, read-alouds and conversation about what your child reads.

Will it help my child do well on a nationally normed test?

It gives regular practice in grammar, word study, writing and comprehension, which are skills such tests sample. It is not test preparation and makes no score promise. If you pick a test for your August 1 evidence, look at a practice version of that specific test as well.

My child is between grades. Which pack do I use?

Use the pack that matches the skill, not the birthday. Because the bundle contains every grade from 1 to 6, you can hand a child the Grade 2 phonics pack and the Grade 3 writing prompts in the same week. That flexibility is the main reason families with mixed levels choose it.

Can I print it at home?

Yes. Everything is a digital download for print or screen use, available right after purchase by email and in your account under Orders. Print one pack at a time so you do not end up with a stack of pages for skills your child has not reached.

Can our co-op use one copy?

The licence covers use in your own teaching, which for a family means your own children. If a co-op or learning pod wants to use the packs with other families, send Teach Lessons a short message first. Copying the files for other households is not allowed.
