The real problem

Third grade asks for more independence

Third grade changes the job of reading and writing. Texts get longer, fewer pictures do the work, and children are expected to read a passage on their own and answer questions about it. In writing, a list of sentences is no longer enough; a story needs a beginning, a problem and an ending. Grammar starts to carry meaning too. Pronouns are a good example. A child who writes he, she and they without a clear reference leaves the reader lost, and that is a third-grade problem, not a punctuation slip. Word patterns matter for the same reason: longer words become common, and a reader who cannot split a word into parts slows down and loses the thread. The class, meanwhile, is wide. Some children decode fluently and are ready for chapter books; others still guess at words with several syllables. Teachers need practice that can go to a small group without a long explanation, and parents need something clear enough for the kitchen table. Creative writing is where many third graders either take off or stall. Given a blank page, some write three lines. Given a structure, the same children can write a full story, because the structure removes the fear of where to start.

Why it fits

What each part adds in Grade 3

The five parts map onto the main third-grade shifts, so you can match a part to the skill a child is missing.

  • Grade 3 Grammar Mastery covers nouns, pronouns, sentences and punctuation, including those unclear pronoun references.
  • Grade 3 Creative Writing uses structured prompts and story starters so a blank page is less daunting.
  • The Phonics & Word Patterns kit works on sound awareness and the patterns inside longer words.
  • Mia and the Moonlight Garden gives independent reading practice with a comprehension focus.
  • The English Vocabulary Trainer – Grade 3 XXL adds a large word set for short daily vocabulary practice.
  • Five separate parts let you run grammar with one group while another reads the story.

Getting started

Using the pack over four to six weeks

A suggested way to spread the pack through a unit of your reading program. Adjust the pace to your class.

  1. Read the story together, then aloneIntroduce Mia and the Moonlight Garden by reading the first part aloud. Let children finish it on their own, then do the comprehension work in pairs before checking individually.
  2. Fix pronouns in real writingTeach a page of Grade 3 Grammar Mastery on pronouns, then ask each child to underline the pronouns in their last piece of writing and check who each one refers to.
  3. Break long words apartUse the Phonics & Word Patterns kit with the group that slows down on longer words. Practice splitting words into parts, then hunt for the same patterns in the story.
  4. Write with a structureChoose a story starter from Grade 3 Creative Writing. Have children plan the beginning, problem and ending in three boxes before they write the full story.
  5. Keep vocabulary movingRun the XXL vocabulary trainer as a five-minute starter several times a week. Ask children to use two of the new words in their creative writing.

What to buy

Grade 3, a step back, or the whole set?

The Grade 3 ELA Pack at $13.99 is the right pick for a third-grade class or child; the five parts cost $19.95 separately. If a child is still building second-grade spelling and sentence skills, the Grade 2 ELA Pack ($10.99) fills that gap first. Strong readers ready for more can move to the Grade 4 ELA Pack ($13.99), which has its own reading story. Teachers of combined classes and families with several children will get more from the Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum ($49.99), with grammar, writing and phonics for each grade and six stories.

Honest limits

Things to know before buying

This pack supports a reading program; it does not replace one. There is one reading story, so independent reading still comes from your own books. It is not test preparation and is not aligned to Common Core or any state's ELA standards, so check it against your own expectations for Grade 3. You supply printing or devices. Use is licensed for your own class or family; contact Teach Lessons before sharing it with colleagues. If it is not a fit, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Will this prepare my class for our state's Grade 3 ELA test?

It is not test prep and is not aligned to, endorsed by or built around any state test, Common Core or state ELA standards. The skills it practices, such as reading a passage, grammar and writing a structured story, are part of third-grade work, but you need to check your state's standards and test information yourself and plan test preparation separately.

How long is Mia and the Moonlight Garden?

Check the story's own product page, which is linked from the pack, for its length and format before you plan. Treat it as one focused reading piece in the pack, and pair it with your class library or a read-aloud for wider reading across the weeks you use it.

My child hates writing. Will the prompts help?

Structured prompts and story starters give a reluctant writer a way in, because the first step is already there. Start with a prompt your child finds funny or interesting, accept a short story at first, and praise the structure before the spelling. Over a few weeks, ask for one more sentence each time.

Can I use it for tutoring sessions?

Yes. Each part targets one skill, which makes it easy to plan a session. In thirty minutes you might do a grammar page, a few vocabulary words and part of a writing prompt. The licence covers the students you tutor yourself; do not share the files with other tutors or post them online.

What if my child is between Grade 2 and Grade 3?

Start with the Grade 3 story and creative writing, which can be done with support, and see how the grammar and phonics parts go. If spelling patterns and basic punctuation are still shaky, use the Grade 2 ELA Pack first for a few weeks. The Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum covers both grades and more.

Is it printable?

Yes. All materials work in print and digital classrooms. After checkout the download link comes by email, and the files stay under Orders in your customer account. Print the parts you need for the week, or show them on a tablet or board if you work digitally.
