Louisiana Storm Closures: A Grab-and-Go 3rd Grade ELA Pack to Print
If your Louisiana parish is closing schools for a hurricane, the cheapest way to keep a third grader reading and writing is a printed pack you set up before the storm. The Grade 3 ELA Pack costs $13.99 and puts five short literacy packs in one download: grammar, creative writing, phonics and word patterns, a reading story and a vocabulary trainer.

The real problem
The short window before a parish closes
In September 2024, parishes across south Louisiana closed schools for Hurricane Francine. Closures like that are usually announced a day or two ahead, and that window is packed. Teachers are clearing classrooms, families are fueling cars and filling water jugs, and nobody has time to build a week of literacy work from scratch. Third grade makes this harder than it looks. Students are moving from learning to read toward reading to learn, and a week without practice shows up in fluency and spelling when they come back. At the same time, a third grader cannot follow a long online assignment alone, and Wi-Fi and power may not hold. What works is plain and physical: a stapled stack of pages a child can do with light help, in short sittings, with no device. For a teacher, cost is the other hard part. Printing a packet for a whole class out of pocket adds up fast if the material itself is expensive. A cheap, focused pack covering grammar, writing, phonics, reading and vocabulary in one download takes the planning off the table, so the hours before landfall go to the things that matter more.
Why it fits
Why this pack works as a storm packet
Each of the five parts gives a third grader something different to do, so a week of pages does not feel like the same worksheet five times.
- Grade 3 Grammar Mastery practices nouns, pronouns, sentences and punctuation on short, printable pages.
- Creative writing prompts and story starters give children something to write about while stuck indoors.
- Phonics & Word Patterns keeps sound and spelling practice going during days away from class.
- Mia and the Moonlight Garden is a complete story with questions for a quiet afternoon.
- The Vocabulary Trainer Grade 3 XXL suits five-minute drills a parent can run from the couch.
- At $13.99, a teacher can buy it for a class without a large out-of-pocket cost.
Getting started
Building the packet in one evening
A suggested way to turn the download into a five-day storm packet.
- Download the night of the announcementThe pack arrives by email and stays in your account under Orders. Download all five parts while you are still on a reliable connection, before the weather turns.
- Pick a page from each part per dayDay one could be a grammar page, a writing prompt and a vocabulary set. Mixing the parts keeps each sitting short and gives the child a little variety from one day to the next.
- Save the story for midweekMia and the Moonlight Garden works well on the day energy is lowest. Reading a story and answering questions feels less like a worksheet and more like a break.
- Staple and labelPut each day's pages together with Day 1, Day 2 and so on written on the front. Children like crossing days off, and parents can see at a glance what is done.
- Collect the work when school reopensTeachers can ask for the packets back on the first day and use them to see who kept up and who needs phonics or grammar review before moving on.
What to buy
One grade, the grades around it, or all six
The Grade 3 ELA Pack at $13.99 is the pick for a single third grade class or child; bought separately, the five parts cost $19.95. If you teach a split class or have children just above or below third grade, add the Grade 2 ELA Pack ($10.99) or the Grade 4 ELA Pack ($13.99) so every child works at their own level. For a family with several kids, or a teacher running intervention groups, the Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum ($49.99) bundles grammar, writing and phonics packs for every grade from 1 to 6, plus six reading stories.
Honest limits
Before you print a class set
This pack is not written for Louisiana. It has no references to the state's ELA standards or to any parish curriculum, and it does not replace the reading program your school uses. Check it against Louisiana's standards and your parish's guidance if that matters for your plans. You provide the printer, paper and staples. The license covers your own teaching, so printing for the students in your own class is fine; sharing the files with other teachers at your school needs a short message to Teach Lessons first. If the pack is not what you expected, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value. The store does not give cash refunds.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Is the pack aligned with Louisiana's ELA standards?
No. The Grade 3 ELA Pack is general third grade literacy practice and has not been aligned with, reviewed against or approved under Louisiana's standards or any parish curriculum. Look through the five parts, grammar, writing, phonics, reading and vocabulary, and compare them with what your class is working on before you rely on it.
Can I send it home with my whole class before a storm?
Yes, for your own class. Printing copies for the students you teach falls under use in your own teaching. If several teachers at your school want to use it, send Teach Lessons a short message before sharing it. Posting the files on a class website or any public page is not allowed.
My child reads below grade level. Will this be too hard?
Parts of it might be. In that case, the Grade 2 ELA Pack at $10.99 is a gentler starting point, with grammar, writing prompts, phonics and a vocabulary trainer for second grade. Some families print both and let the child choose, which keeps closure days calmer.
How many days of work are in it?
That depends on how much you print per day and how quickly your child works, so the store does not promise a number of days. Five parts let you mix a little of each into every sitting. Short daily sessions are usually easier to keep up than one long one.
Do we need a tablet or internet once it is printed?
No. You need a connection to download the pack and a printer to make copies. After that, everything is on paper. That is the point of preparing it before landfall: if the power goes out for a few days, the packet still works with a pencil and daylight.
Does it include anything about hurricanes or Louisiana?
No. The reading story is Mia and the Moonlight Garden, and the other parts are grammar, writing, phonics and vocabulary practice. Nothing in it is about storms or the state. If you want a local writing task, add your own prompt, such as asking children to describe their week at home.
