The real problem
The fourth-grade writing gap
By fourth grade most children can write; the question is whether they can control what they write. Tense is the clearest sign. A child tells a story in the past, slips into the present halfway through and back again, and does not notice because it sounds fine in their head. Sentence structure is the next layer. Fourth graders start joining ideas, and without some grammar to lean on, that means long chains of and then. Writing tasks change as well. Instead of a few sentences about a picture, students are asked for a paragraph with a clear opening, supporting details and an ending, and soon for several paragraphs. The children who struggle are usually not short of ideas. They are short of words and of a frame to put them in, and word banks and planning tools close that gap faster than another blank page. Spelling and word study do not stop either. Fourth-grade texts contain longer and less regular words, and readers who never sorted out the patterns start avoiding them in their own writing. And reading has to stay interesting. A mystery gives a built-in reason to read closely: the clues matter, so children check back in the text to find them, which is the habit comprehension work is trying to build.
Why it fits
Where the pack meets those needs
Here is how each of the five parts answers one of the fourth-grade problems above.
- The Grade 4 Grammar Pack targets tenses and sentence structure, the most visible gaps in fourth-grade writing.
- Grade 4 Writing Prompts come with word banks and support tools for children who have ideas but stall.
- Grade 4 Phonics & Word Study works on patterns and sound skills for longer, less regular words.
- The Mystery of the Missing Map gives students a reason to reread closely and track clues in the text.
- The English Vocabulary Trainer – Grade 4 feeds new words into the writing the prompts ask for.
- Each part stands alone, so one child can practice tenses while another works on the story.
Getting started
Two weeks with the Grade 4 pack
This is one suggested plan for a literacy block. Spread it out further if your class needs more time.
- Diagnose with a quick writeAsk for a short story about a recent weekend. Mark tense shifts and run-on sentences in one color. That tells you which grammar pages to use first and with whom.
- Practice tense controlWork through the tense pages of the Grade 4 Grammar Pack, then have students rewrite one paragraph of their quick write fully in the past tense.
- Read the mystery in chunksRead The Mystery of the Missing Map in two or three sittings. Stop to list clues and predictions, then use the comprehension work to check understanding.
- Write with a word bankPick a prompt from the Grade 4 Writing Prompts. Have students choose five words from the word bank before writing, and use the support tools to plan their paragraphs.
- Keep word study and vocabulary shortUse the phonics and word study pages and the vocabulary trainer in ten-minute slots across both weeks, linking new words to the story where you can.
What to buy
Which ELA pack to buy for fourth grade
For a fourth-grade class, tutoring group or child at home, the Grade 4 ELA Pack at $13.99 is the natural choice; its five parts cost $19.95 separately. If tense and sentence basics are still weak, the Grade 3 ELA Pack ($13.99) is a sensible step back. For a strong writer ready for more, the Grade 5 ELA Pack ($13.99) includes two reading stories. If you teach a split class or several grades at home, the Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum ($49.99) gives grammar, writing and phonics for every grade plus six reading stories, but no vocabulary trainers.
Honest limits
What to supply yourself
The pack gives you focused practice, not a fourth-grade reading program or a novel study, so you still need books for independent reading and class texts. It is not written for any state and is not aligned to Common Core or state ELA standards; check the skills against your own Grade 4 expectations. Printing and devices are yours. The licence covers your own students or children; ask Teach Lessons before sharing it across a grade team. If it is not what you need, exchange it for store credit of equal value within 7 days.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Is the pack aligned to Common Core or my state's Grade 4 ELA standards?
No. It is not aligned to, approved for or reviewed against Common Core or any state standards, and there are no standards codes on the pages. Tenses, sentence structure, paragraph writing and reading comprehension are normal fourth-grade content, but compare the pack with your own state standards or school curriculum before relying on it.
Is the story a good choice for reluctant readers?
A mystery suits many reluctant readers, because the plot gives them a reason to keep going. Read the opening aloud, stop at a tense moment and let them predict what happens. Check the story's own product page, linked from the pack, to see its length and the comprehension tasks before you plan.
How do the word banks help?
The writing prompts come with word banks and support tools, so a child who knows what to say but not how to say it has words and a structure in front of them. Ask them to use a set number of words from the bank. As confidence grows, take the bank away for one prompt and compare the results.
Can I use it in an intervention group?
Yes. Each part targets one skill, which makes it easy to give a small group exactly the practice they need, such as tense control or word patterns. For students working well below grade level, the Grade 3 pack or the Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum gives you earlier material from the same series.
Does it work for homeschooling a fourth grader?
It works as the skills part of a homeschool ELA plan: grammar, writing, phonics, vocabulary and one story. You will still want regular reading and read-alouds. Homeschool requirements differ by state, so confirm current rules with your state or a homeschool legal resource, and treat this pack as one tool rather than the whole subject.
How quickly can I start?
As soon as you have paid. The download link arrives by email, and the files are also stored under Orders in your customer account. Print the first grammar page and the opening of the story, and you can teach from the pack the same afternoon or the next morning.
