North Carolina Homeschool Literacy, Grades 1–6: Grammar, Phonics, Writing
North Carolina Homeschool Literacy, Grades 1–6: Grammar, Phonics, Writing
North Carolina leaves the choice of homeschool curriculum to families, and for grammar, phonics, writing and reading in Grades 1 to 6 the Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum is one low-cost option. It packs 24 grade-level resources into one download, so siblings in different grades each have their own pages. It is practice material, not a complete language arts program or a test-prep course.
See the packs for Grades 1–6The Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum ($49.99) gives a North Carolina homeschool family 24 grade-level literacy packs: a grammar pack, a writing prompts pack and a phonics or word study pack for every grade from 1 to 6, plus six reading comprehension stories. It suits families teaching several children at different levels. It is not approved by the state and is not designed to prepare for any particular standardized test.

The real problem
North Carolina's rules and the literacy gap they leave open
North Carolina's home school rules focus on paperwork, schedule and testing rather than on a list of subjects. As of the 2026–27 school year, you file a notice of intent with the N.C. Division of Non-Public Education (DNPE) at least five business days before you start, with your school's name and address, its chief administrator and proof that the teacher holds a high school diploma or equivalent. DNPE does not accept notices in May or June. Your home school runs on a regular schedule for at least nine calendar months a year, keeps attendance and immunization records, and gives a nationally standardized achievement test every year covering English grammar, reading, spelling and mathematics. Results stay at home for at least a year and are shown to DNPE on request. No other subjects are named, and families choose their own curriculum. That freedom has a catch for literacy. Three of the four tested areas are language skills, yet nothing tells you how to teach grammar, spelling patterns or reading in a sensible order, grade by grade. With two or three children at different stages, finding separate, level-appropriate practice for each one quickly becomes the hardest part of the week.
Why it fits
How the 24 packs fit a North Carolina home school
The set is built as one pack per skill per grade, which suits a family schedule more than a single-grade classroom book.
- A grammar pack for each grade practices sentences, parts of speech, tenses and punctuation.
- Phonics and word study packs move from phonological awareness in Grade 1 to roots and prefixes.
- Writing prompt packs give every grade structured prompts, story starters and editing tools.
- Six reading comprehension stories add regular reading practice with questions.
- Siblings in different grades each get their own pack on the same skill at once.
- Short practice pages fit easily into a regular schedule kept over nine months or more.
Getting started
A weekly rhythm for literacy at home
One family's possible routine, offered as an idea. Shorten or stretch it to suit your children.
- Pick each child's grade packsStart with the grammar, writing and phonics packs for each child's grade. If a child is uneven, use a lower phonics pack and a grade-level writing pack; the levels are separate on purpose.
- Grammar early in the weekSpend a short session on the grammar pack on the first days of the week. Children can work side by side on their own grade's pages while you move between them.
- Phonics and word study midweekUse the phonics or word study pack midweek. For younger children this is sound awareness and patterns; for Grades 5 and 6 it becomes morphology, roots and prefixes.
- Write at the end of the weekClose the week with one writing prompt per child. Use the word banks and editing tools in the older packs to build the habit of revising.
- Read a story when it fitsWork through one of the six comprehension stories now and then. Keep finished pages with your attendance records so you can see progress across the year.
What to buy
One set for the family or one pack per child
The Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum ($49.99, $95.76 if the 24 parts were bought separately) is the better buy once you teach more than one grade or expect to use later grades next year. With a single child, a grade pack can be enough: the Grade 1 ELA Pack ($12.99) and Grade 3 ELA Pack ($13.99) also add a vocabulary trainer, and the Grade 5 ELA Pack ($13.99) gathers that grade's packs and two stories. If your child is learning English as a new language, the ESL Newcomer Curriculum Bundle ($79.99, Grades 2–6) starts with everyday English, basic grammar and vocabulary.
Honest limits
What this set is not
This is general literacy practice for Grades 1–6. It is not written for North Carolina, not approved by DNPE, and it does not file your notice, keep your records or replace the annual standardized test. It is not a full language arts program: there are no novels and no test practice. Check current home school law with DNPE or a homeschool legal resource before relying on any plan. The licence covers your own family; a co-op should message Teach Lessons first. Within 7 days you can exchange it for store credit of equal value if it is not a fit, but not for cash.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Does this curriculum fulfill North Carolina's homeschool requirements?
No product can do that for you, and this one is not approved or endorsed by the state or DNPE. North Carolina's rules are about your notice of intent, schedule, records and annual testing, and families choose their own curriculum. This set is one resource for literacy. Confirm current law with DNPE or a homeschool legal resource.
Will it prepare my children for the annual standardized test?
It is not built around any test. The packs practice grammar, phonics, word study, writing and reading, which are related to the English grammar and reading areas the test covers, but there is no test-format practice. Use the test publisher's own materials if you want practice in that format.
My children are in Grades 2, 4 and 6. Does one purchase cover all three?
Yes. The set holds packs for every grade from 1 to 6, so each child works from their own grade's grammar, writing and phonics material. That is the main reason to choose the full set over single grade packs. The licence covers use within your own family.
What does the phonics strand look like in the upper grades?
It changes with age. Grade 1 builds phonological awareness through writing prompts, Grades 2 to 4 work on phonics, word patterns and word study, Grade 5 adds morphology, and Grade 6 covers academic word study with roots, prefixes and patterns. Each step builds on the one before.
Is there enough reading in it?
There are six reading comprehension stories, including Daisy the Brave Little Duck for Grade 1 and The Lighthouse Mystery for Grade 6. That is practice, not a reading program, so plan on library books or novels alongside it for daily reading. The stories work well as a weekly check-in.
How do I receive it?
As a digital download right after checkout. The link arrives by email and stays in your customer account under Orders, so you can print one child's pack at a time and download the files again next year when a younger sibling moves up a grade.
